Successful treatment of autoimmunity in NZB/NZW F1 mice with monoclonal antibody to L3T4.
Autoimmune NZB/NZW mice were treated with weekly injections of monoclonal antibody (mAb) to L3T4, an antigen expressed on a distinct subpopulation of T cells that respond to class II major histocompatibility antigens. Treatment with anti-L3T4 depleted circulating target cells, reduced autoantibody production, retarded renal disease, and prolonged life relative to control mice treated either with saline or with purified nonimmune rat IgG. These findings establish that autoimmune disease in NZB/NZW mice is regulated by T cells. In contrast to mice treated with nonimmune rat IgG, mice treated with rat anti-L3T4 mAb developed little or no antibody to rat Ig. Thus, the benefits of treatment with anti-L3T4 were achieved while minimizing the risks associated with a host immune response to therapy. This study raises the possibility that treatment with mAb against Leu-3/T4, the human homologue for L3T4 might be effective in the treatment of certain autoimmune diseases in people
Optimal Compression of Floating-point Astronomical Images Without Significant Loss of Information
We describe a compression method for floating-point astronomical images that
gives compression ratios of 6 -- 10 while still preserving the scientifically
important information in the image. The pixel values are first preprocessed by
quantizing them into scaled integer intensity levels, which removes some of the
uncompressible noise in the image. The integers are then losslessly compressed
using the fast and efficient Rice algorithm and stored in a portable FITS
format file. Quantizing an image more coarsely gives greater image compression,
but it also increases the noise and degrades the precision of the photometric
and astrometric measurements in the quantized image. Dithering the pixel values
during the quantization process can greatly improve the precision of
measurements in the images. This is especially important if the analysis
algorithm relies on the mode or the median which would be similarly quantized
if the pixel values are not dithered. We perform a series of experiments on
both synthetic and real astronomical CCD images to quantitatively demonstrate
that the magnitudes and positions of stars in the quantized images can be
measured with the predicted amount of precision. In order to encourage wider
use of these image compression methods, we have made available a pair of
general-purpose image compression programs, called fpack and funpack, which can
be used to compress any FITS format image.Comment: Accepted PAS
Lossless Astronomical Image Compression and the Effects of Noise
We compare a variety of lossless image compression methods on a large sample
of astronomical images and show how the compression ratios and speeds of the
algorithms are affected by the amount of noise in the images. In the ideal case
where the image pixel values have a random Gaussian distribution, the
equivalent number of uncompressible noise bits per pixel is given by Nbits
=log2(sigma * sqrt(12)) and the lossless compression ratio is given by R =
BITPIX / Nbits + K where BITPIX is the bit length of the pixel values and K is
a measure of the efficiency of the compression algorithm.
We perform image compression tests on a large sample of integer astronomical
CCD images using the GZIP compression program and using a newer FITS
tiled-image compression method that currently supports 4 compression
algorithms: Rice, Hcompress, PLIO, and GZIP. Overall, the Rice compression
algorithm strikes the best balance of compression and computational efficiency;
it is 2--3 times faster and produces about 1.4 times greater compression than
GZIP. The Rice algorithm produces 75%--90% (depending on the amount of noise in
the image) as much compression as an ideal algorithm with K = 0.
The image compression and uncompression utility programs used in this study
(called fpack and funpack) are publicly available from the HEASARC web site. A
simple command-line interface may be used to compress or uncompress any FITS

A dialectical approach to theoretical integration in developmental-contextual identity research
Future advances in identity research will depend on integration across major theoretical traditions. Developmental-contextualism has established essential criteria to guide this effort, including specifying the context of identity development, its timing over the life course, and its content. This article assesses four major traditions of identity research - identify status, eudaimonic identity, sociocultural theory, and narrative identity - in light of these criteria, and describes the contribution of each tradition to the broader enterprise of developmental-contextual research. This article proposes dialectical integration of the four traditions, for the purpose of generating new questions when the tensions and contradictions among theoretical traditions are acknowledged. We provide examples from existing literature of the kinds of research that could address these questions and consider ways of addressing the validity issues involved in developmental-contextual identity research

Effects of Early Spring and Preventative Snow Mold Fungicide Applications on DMI Sensitive and Insensitive Populations of Sclerotinia Homoeocarpa
Dollar spot, caused by the pathogen S. homoeocarpa (F.T. Bennett), is a common disease that infects a wide variety of turfgrasses all over the world. Yet it is significant problem on golf course putting greens and fairways consisting of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.) and annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.). It is active in a wide variety of environmental conditions ranging from 16-30ËC but favors warm, humid days, followed by cool nights. Sclerotinia homoeocarpa overwinters as dormant mycelium in dead plant tissue. In the spring, germinating mycelia begin to infect leaf blades causing foliar lesions, which then spread via mycelium by means of wind, rain, animals and equipment. While there are a number of cultural practices that can reduce disease severity, frequent fungicide applications are required to maintain acceptable playing conditions on a golf course. The repeated use of fungicides with the same mode of action has led to the development of fungicide resistance of S. homoeocarpa to certain fungicide classes. Most notably, demethylase inhibitor (DMI) fungicides have been found to have varying levels of inefficacy against S. homoeocarpa across North America. The cause for reduced efficacy is suspected to the shifted sensitivity levels of many S. homoeocarpa populations, which are resulted from repeated use of the DMI fungicide. Recently, âearly-spring fungicide applicationsâ targeting to reduce initial inoculum density of dollar spot have gained popularity in an attempt to reduce dollar spot severity. In addition, preventative fungicide applications (from late October through mid-November) containing DMI fungicides have been traditionally practiced to target snow molds (caused by Microdochium nivale, Typhula spp.) in the northeastern United States. To date, there is not a clear understanding as to what effect, if any, these applications have on S. homoeocarpa DMI sensitivity or residual dollar spot control the following year. Traditional preventative snow mold applications were also investigated on the effect of S. homoeocarpa DMI sensitivity and early-season dollar spot control. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of early-spring dollar spot application and late-fall snow mold application on S. homoeocarpa population with a bimodal distribution of DMI sensitive and insensitive isolates
Alcohol and healthy ageing: a challenge for alcohol policy
Objectives:
This paper presents findings of a qualitative study of older people's use of alcohol during retirement and identifies ways that an improved understanding of older people's drinking can inform policy approaches to alcohol and active and healthy ageing.
Study design:
Qualitative semi-structured interviews conducted with a self-selecting sample of retired people.
Methods:
Participants were recruited from three geographical locations in the West of Scotland. A quota sampling design was used to ensure a broad spread of participants in terms of socio-economic position, age and gender. In total 40 participants were interviewed and the data analysed thematically using Braun and Clarke's (2006) approach.
Results:
Amongst those who used alcohol, it was most often framed in terms of pleasure, relaxation, socialising and as a way to mark the passage of time. Alcohol was often associated with social occasions and interactions both in private and in public spaces. There were also many examples of the use of imposed routines to limit alcohol use and of a decreasing volume of alcohol being consumed as participants aged. This suggests that older people are often active in constructing what they regard as âhealthierâ routines around alcohol use. However, processes and circumstances associated with ageing can lead to risk of social isolation and/or increased alcohol consumption. Such processes include retirement from paid work and other âbiographical disruptionsâ such as caring for a partner, bereavement and/or loss of social networks.
Conclusions:
These findings highlight processes that can result in changes in drinking habits and routines. Whilst these processes can be associated with a reduction or cessation of alcohol use as people age, they can also be associated with increased risk of harmful alcohol consumption. Fractured or disrupted routines, particularly those associated with bereavement or the burden of caring responsibilities, through increasing the risk of loneliness and isolation, can construct increased risk of harmful alcohol consumption. These findings reframe the pathway of risk between ageing and alcohol-related harm by highlighting the vulnerability to harmful drinking practices brought by fracture or sudden change of routine. The findings point to a role for public health in supporting the reconstruction of routines that provide structure and meaning and can be used to actively manage the benefits and harms associated with drinking
