    An Assessment and Measurement of Risks in the International Airline Industry: A Study of the ICAO Carriers Over the Period, 1990-2013

    A prior study by one of the authors (Gritta, et. al. 2006) published in the Journal of the Transportation Research Forum, examined the extent of operating, financial, and total leverage facing the major U.S airlines, those carriers with total revenues of $1.0 billion or more. The study found that the vast majority of the carriers were highly leveraged at both the operating and financial levels and that this resulted in highly unstable profitability and increased the dangers of bankruptcy. The global airline industry has always been highly cyclical and somewhat fixed-cost driven. Airlines are thus high in what financial analysts refer to as operating leverage. In addition, the many airlines have followed aggressive debt strategies; that is, they have chosen to use large amounts of long-term debt finance to purchase assets. This results in a high degree of financial leverage. In the past, the resulting combined leverage has created severe financial problems for major carriers, both domestically and internationally.The current study seeks to examine a sample of foreign carriers in order to measure the extent of risks on the international level. In doing so, comparisons will be made to the large U.S. carriers. If possible, the authors will use the same time horizon as in the published paper, although in some cases carriers are too new to have such a history

    Climate policy and ancillary benefits : a survey and integration into the modelling of international negotiations on climate change

    Currently informal and formal international negotiations on climate change take place in an intensive way since the Kyoto Protocol expires already in 2012. A post-Kyoto regulation to combat global warming is not yet stipulated. Due to rapidly increasing greenhouse gas emission levels, industrialized countries urge major polluters from the developing world like China and India to participate in a future agreement. Whether these developing countries will do so, depends on the prevailing incentives to participate in international climate protection efforts. This paper identifies ancillary benefits of climate policy to provide important incentives to attend a new international protocol and to positively affect the likelihood of accomplishing a post-Kyoto agreement which includes commitments of developing countries

    An Estimate of the Numbers and Density of Low-Energy Structures (or Decoys) in the Conformational Landscape of Proteins

    The conformational energy landscape of a protein, as calculated by known potential energy functions, has several minima, and one of these corresponds to its native structure. It is however difficult to comprehensively estimate the actual numbers of low energy structures (or decoys), the relationships between them, and how the numbers scale with the size of the protein.We have developed an algorithm to rapidly and efficiently identify the low energy conformers of oligo peptides by using mutually orthogonal Latin squares to sample the potential energy hyper surface. Using this algorithm, and the ECEPP/3 potential function, we have made an exhaustive enumeration of the low-energy structures of peptides of different lengths, and have extrapolated these results to larger polypeptides.We show that the number of native-like structures for a polypeptide is, in general, an exponential function of its sequence length. The density of these structures in conformational space remains more or less constant and all the increase appears to come from an expansion in the volume of the space. These results are consistent with earlier reports that were based on other models and techniques

    Hydrodynamic modelling of protein conformation in solution: ELLIPS and HYDRO

    The last three decades has seen some important advances in our ability to represent the conformation of proteins in solution on the basis of hydrodynamic measurements. Advances in theoretical modeling capabilities have been matched by commensurate advances in the precision of hydrodynamic measurements. We consider the advances in whole-body (simple ellipsoid-based) modeling—still useful for providing an overall idea of molecular shape, particularly for those systems where only a limited amount of data is available—and outline the ELLIPS suite of algorithms which facilitates the use of this approach. We then focus on bead modeling strategies, particularly the surface or shell–bead approaches and the HYDRO suite of algorithms. We demonstrate how these are providing great insights into complex issues such as the conformation of immunoglobulins and other multi-domain complexes

    Association of Tannins and Related Polyphenols with the Cyclic Peptide Gramicidin S

    The association of 10 different tannins and related polyphenols with gramicidin S, a cyclic peptide having a rigid β-turn structure, has been examined using 1H-NMR spectroscopy. In the presence of pentagalloylglucose and epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate, the proton signals due to proline and the adjacent phenylalanine moieties selectively shifted to up field, suggesting a regioselective association with the β-turn structure. The association was also supported by the observation of intermolecular nuclear Overhauser effects between epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate and the peptide. In contrast, ellagitannins, biogenetically derived from pentagalloylglucose, showed small and non-selective chemical shift changes, suggesting that interaction with these tannins is relatively weak. The hydrophobicity of the tannin molecules and the steric hindrance of the interaction site are thought to be important in the association
