The Time of Flight System of the AMS-02 Space Experiment
The Time-of-Flight (TOF) system of the AMS detector gives the fast trigger to
the read out electronics and measures velocity, direction and charge of the
crossing particles. The new version of the detector (called AMS-02) will be
installed on the International Space Station on March 2004. The fringing field
of the AMS-02 superconducting magnet is kG where the
photomultiplers (PM) are installed. In order to be able to operate with this
residual field, a new type of PM was chosen and the mechanical design was
constrained by requiring to minimize the angle between the magnetic field
vector and the PM axis. Due to strong field and to the curved light guides, the
time resolution will be ps, while the new electronics will allow

Attachment styles and personal growth following romantic breakups: The mediating roles of distress, rumination, and tendency to rebound

Study 1 (N = 411) and Study 2 (N = 465) measured attachment style, breakup distress, and personal growth; Study 2 additionally measured ruminative reflection, brooding, and proclivity to rebound with new partners. Structural equation modelling revealed in both studies that anxiety was indirectly associated with greater personal growth through heightened breakup distress, whereas avoidance was indirectly associated with lower personal growth through inhibited breakup distress. Study 2 further showed that the positive association of breakup distress with personal growth was accounted for by enhanced reflection and brooding, and that anxious individuals’ greater personal growth was also explained by their proclivity to rebound. These findings suggest that anxious individuals’ hyperactivated breakup distress may act as a catalyst for personal growth by promoting the cognitive processing of breakup-related thoughts and emotions, whereas avoidant individuals’ deactivated distress may inhibit personal growth by suppressing this cognitive work
The AMS-02 Time of Flight System. Final Design
The AMS-02 detector is a superconducting magnetic spectrometer that will
operate on the International Space Station. The time of flight (TOF) system of
AMS-02 is composed by four scintillator planes with 8, 8, 10, 8 counters each,
read at both ends by a total of 144 phototubes. This paper describes the new

Building an Integrated Enhanced Virtual Research Environment Metadata Catalogue
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to boost multidisciplinary research by the building of an integrated catalogue or research assets metadata. Such an integrated catalogue should enable researchers to solve problems or analyse phenomena that require a view across several scientific domains.
Design/methodology/approach
There are two main approaches for integrating metadata catalogues provided by different e-science research infrastructures (e-RIs): centralised and distributed. The authors decided to implement a central metadata catalogue that describes, provides access to and records actions on the assets of a number of e-RIs participating in the system. The authors chose the CERIF data model for description of assets available via the integrated catalogue. Analysis of popular metadata formats used in e-RIs has been conducted, and mappings between popular formats and the CERIF data model have been defined using an XML-based tool for description and automatic execution of mappings.
Findings
An integrated catalogue of research assets metadata has been created. Metadata from e-RIs supporting Dublin Core, ISO 19139, DCAT-AP, EPOS-DCAT-AP, OIL-E and CKAN formats can be integrated into the catalogue. Metadata are stored in CERIF RDF in the integrated catalogue. A web portal for searching this catalogue has been implemented.
Research limitations/implications
Only five formats are supported at this moment. However, description of mappings between other source formats and the target CERIF format can be defined in the future using the 3M tool, an XML-based tool for describing X3ML mappings that can then be automatically executed on XML metadata records. The approach and best practices described in this paper can thus be applied in future mappings between other metadata formats.
Practical implications
The integrated catalogue is a part of the eVRE prototype, which is a result of the VRE4EIC H2020 project.
Social implications
The integrated catalogue should boost the performance of multi-disciplinary research; thus it has the potential to enhance the practice of data science and so contribute to an increasingly knowledge-based society.
Originality/value

The Parkes Galactic Meridian Survey (PGMS): observations and CMB polarization foreground analysis
We present observations and CMB foreground analysis of the Parkes Galactic
Meridian Survey (PGMS), an investigation of the Galactic latitude behaviour of
the polarized synchrotron emission at 2.3 GHz with the Parkes Radio Telescope.
The survey consists of a 5-deg wide strip along the Galactic meridian l=254-deg
extending from Galactic plane to South Galactic pole. We identify three zones
distinguished by polarized emission properties: the disc, the halo, and a
transition region connecting them. The halo section lies at latitudes |b| >
40-deg and has weak and smooth polarized emission mostly at large scale with
steep angular power spectra of median slope . The
disc region covers the latitudes |b|<20-deg and has a brighter, more complex
emission dominated by the small scales with flatter spectra of median slope
. The transition region has steep spectra as in the
halo, but the emission increases toward the Galactic plane from halo to disc
levels. The change of slope and emission structure at b \sim -20\degr is
sudden, indicating a sharp disc-halo transition. The whole halo section is just
one environment extended over 50-deg with very low emission which, once scaled
to 70GHz, is equivalent to the CMB B-Mode emission for a tensor-to-scalar
perturbation power ratio r_halo = 3.3 +/- 0.4 x 10^{-3}. Applying a
conservative cleaning procedure, we estimate an r detection limit of at 70~GHz (3-sigma C.L.) and, assuming a dust polariztion
fraction <12%, at 150~GHz. The 150-GHz limit
matches the goals of planned sub-orbital experiments, which can therefore be
conducted at this high frequency. The 70-GHz limit is close to the goal of
proposed next generation space missions, which thus might not strictly require

The TOF counters of the AMS-02 experiment: space qualification tests and beam test results
The scintillator counters of the TOF system of AMS-02 is beeing constructed to match the needs of the AMS-02 experiment that is armed by a high aperture superconducting dipole magnet. The goals of the TOF-02 hodoscopes actually are: to give the fast trigger to the all sub-detectors of AMS-02; to measure the particle velocity ensuring a 1 × 10 9 albedo rejection; to measure the absolute charge by particle energy loss, up to at least Z = 20 . In spring of 2005 all the TOF counter planes will be assembled and the space qualification tests will be performed. A description of the first test results and of the TOF performances will be given

Raw Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes Induce Oxidative Stress and Activate MAPKs, AP-1, NF-κB, and Akt in Normal and Malignant Human Mesothelial Cells
Background
Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), with their unique physicochemical and mechanical properties, have many potential new applications in medicine and industry. There has been great concern subsequent to preliminary investigations of the toxicity, biopersistence, pathogenicity, and ability of SWCNTs to translocate to subpleural areas. These results compel studies of potential interactions of SWCNTs with mesothelial cells. Objective
Exposure to asbestos is the primary cause of malignant mesothelioma in 80–90% of individuals who develop the disease. Because the mesothelial cells are the primary target cells of asbestos-induced molecular changes mediated through an oxidant-linked mechanism, we used normal mesothelial and malignant mesothelial cells to investigate alterations in molecular signaling in response to a commercially manufactured SWCNT. Methods
In the present study, we exposed mesothelial cells to SWCNTs and investigated reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, cell viability, DNA damage, histone H2AX phosphorylation, activation of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase 1 (PARP-1), stimulation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERKs), Jun N-terminal kinases (JNKs), protein p38, and activation of activator protein-1 (AP-1), nuclear factor κB (NF-κB), and protein serine-threonine kinase (Akt). Results
Exposure to SWCNTs induced ROS generation, increased cell death, enhanced DNA damage and H2AX phosphorylation, and activated PARP, AP-1, NF-κB, p38, and Akt in a dose-dependent manner. These events recapitulate some of the key molecular events involved in mesothelioma development associated with asbestos exposure. Conclusions
The cellular and molecular findings reported here do suggest that SWCNTs can cause potentially adverse cellular responses in mesothelial cells through activation of molecular signaling associated with oxidative stress, which is of sufficient significance to warrant in vivo animal exposure studies
