Safeguarding children in dentistry: 1. Child protection training, experience and practice of dental professionals with an interest in paediatric dentistry
* Few dental professionals with child protection training have experience of making referrals.
* There is a wide gap in practice between recognising signs of child abuse and neglect and responding effectively.
* This may indicate missed opportunities to save children from continuing abuse.
* There is a need for improved child protection information, support and training for dental professionals.
Abstract
Following several highly publicised inquiries into the deaths of children from abuse and neglect, there has been much recent interest in the role and responsibility of all health professionals to protect children at risk of maltreatment. The findings of a postal questionnaire, sent in March 2005 to 789 dentists and dental care professionals with an interest in paediatric dentistry working in varied settings in the UK, are presented in a two-part report and discussed in the context of current multi-agency good practice in safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. This first part explores reported child protection training, experience and practice. There was a significant gap between recognising signs of abuse and responding effectively: 67% of respondents had suspected abuse or neglect of a child patient at some time in their career but only 29% had ever made a child protection referral. Camera-Based Articulation Angle Sensing for Heavy Goods Vehicles
Articulation angle sensing is an essential component of manoeuvrability and stability control systems for articulated heavy goods vehicles, particularly long combination vehicles. Existing solutions to this sensing task are limited by reliance on trailer modifications or information or by measurement accuracy, or both, restricting commercial adoption. In this paper we present a purely tractor-based sensor concept comprising a rear-facing camera and the parallel tracking and mapping (PTAM) image processing algorithm. The system requires no prior knowledge of or modifications to the trailer, is compatible with planar and non-planar trailer shapes, and with multiply-articulated vehicle combinations. The system is validated in full-scale vehicle tests on both a tractor semi-trailer combination and a truck and full-trailer combination, demonstrating robust performance in a number of conditions, including trailers with non-planar geometry and with minimal visual features. Average RMS measurement errors of 1.19, 1.03 and 1.53 degrees were demonstrated for the semi-trailer and full-trailer (drawbar and semi-trailer) respectively. This compares favourably with the state-of-the-art in the published literature. Learning an atlas of a cognitive process in its functional geometry
Proceedings of the 22nd International Conference, IPMI 2011, Kloster Irsee, Germany, July 3-8, 2011.In this paper we construct an atlas that captures functional characteristics of a cognitive process from a population of individuals. The functional connectivity is encoded in a low-dimensional embedding space derived from a diffusion process on a graph that represents correlations of fMRI time courses. The atlas is represented by a common prior distribution for the embedded fMRI signals of all subjects. The atlas is not directly coupled to the anatomical space, and can represent functional networks that are variable in their spatial distribution. We derive an algorithm for fitting this generative model to the observed data in a population. Discovery of a Close Pair of z = 4.25 Quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
We report the discovery of a pair of z = 4.25 quasars with a separation of 33 arcseconds. The brighter of the two objects was identified as a high-redshift quasar candidate from Sloan Digital Sky Survey multicolor imaging data, and the redshift was measured from a spectrum obtained with the Hobby-Eberly Telescope. The slit orientation of this observation {\it by chance} included another quasar, approximately one magnitude fainter and having the same redshift as the target. This is the third serendipitous discovery of a z > 4 quasar. The differences in the relative strengths and profiles of the emission lines suggest that this is a quasar pair and not a gravitational lens. The two objects are likely to be physically associated; the projected physical separation is approximately 210 kpc and the redshifts are identical to 0.01, implying a radial physical separation of 950 kpc or less. Estimation of trailer off-tracking using visual odometry
High Capacity Vehicles (HCVs) have been shown to be highly effective in reducing emissions associated with road freight transport. However, the reduced manoeuvrability of long vehicles often necessitates the use of active trailer steering. Path-following trailer steering systems are very effective in this regard, but are currently limited to on-highway applications due to the manner in which trailer off-tracking is estimated. In this work, a novel trailer off- tracking measurement concept is introduced which is independent of wheel slip and ground surface conditions, and requires no additional sensor measurements or parameter data from the tractor. The concept utilises a stereo camera pair affixed to the trailer and a visual odometry-based algorithm to calculate off-tracking. The concept was evaluated in detailed simulation and full-scale vehicle tests, demonstrating its feasibility and highlighting some important characteristics. The utilisation of health research in policy-making: Concepts, examples and methods of assessment
The importance of health research utilisation in policy-making, and of understanding the
mechanisms involved, is increasingly recognised. Recent reports calling for more resources to
improve health in developing countries, and global pressures for accountability, draw greater
attention to research-informed policy-making. Key utilisation issues have been described for at
least twenty years, but the growing focus on health research systems creates additional dimensions.
The utilisation of health research in policy-making should contribute to policies that may eventually
lead to desired outcomes, including health gains. In this article, exploration of these issues is
combined with a review of various forms of policy-making. When this is linked to analysis of
different types of health research, it assists in building a comprehensive account of the diverse
meanings of research utilisation.
Previous studies report methods and conceptual frameworks that have been applied, if with varying
degrees of success, to record utilisation in policy-making. These studies reveal various examples of
research impact within a general picture of underutilisation.
Factors potentially enhancing utilisation can be identified by exploration of: priority setting;
activities of the health research system at the interface between research and policy-making; and
the role of the recipients, or 'receptors', of health research. An interfaces and receptors model
provides a framework for analysis.
Recommendations about possible methods for assessing health research utilisation follow
identification of the purposes of such assessments. Our conclusion is that research utilisation can
be better understood, and enhanced, by developing assessment methods informed by conceptual
analysis and review of previous studies
Arbitrary Choice of Basic Variables in Density Functional Theory. II. Illustrative Applications
Our recent theory (Ref. 1) enables us to choose arbitrary quantities as the
basic variables of the density functional theory. In this paper we apply it to
several cases. In the case where the occupation matrix of localized orbitals is
chosen as a basic variable, we can obtain the single-particle equation which is
equivalent to that of the LDA+U method. The theory also leads to the
Hartree-Fock-Kohn-Sham equation by letting the exchange energy be a basic
variable. Furthermore, if the quantity associated with the density of states
near the Fermi level is chosen as a basic variable, the resulting
single-particle equation includes the additional potential which could mainly
modify the energy-band structures near the Fermi level.Comment: 27 page
Mind the Gap: Investigating Toddlers’ Sensitivity to Contact Relations in Predictive Events
Toddlers readily learn predictive relations between events (e.g., that event A predicts event B). However, they intervene on A to try to cause B only in a few contexts: When a dispositional agent initiates the event or when the event is described with causal language. The current studies look at whether toddlers’ failures are due merely to the difficulty of initiating interventions or to more general constraints on the kinds of events they represent as causal. Toddlers saw a block slide towards a base, but an occluder prevented them from seeing whether the block contacted the base; after the block disappeared behind the occluder, a toy connected to the base did or did not activate. We hypothesized that if toddlers construed the events as causal, they would be sensitive to the contact relations between the participants in the predictive event. In Experiment 1, the block either moved spontaneously (no dispositional agent) or emerged already in motion (a dispositional agent was potentially present). Toddlers were sensitive to the contact relations only when a dispositional agent was potentially present. Experiment 2 confirmed that toddlers inferred a hidden agent was present when the block emerged in motion. In Experiment 3, the block moved spontaneously, but the events were described either with non-causal (“here’s my block”) or causal (“the block can make it go”) language. Toddlers were sensitive to the contact relations only when given causal language. Camera-based measurement of cyclist motion
Heavy goods vehicles are overrepresented in cyclist fatality statistics in the United Kingdom relative to their proportion of total traffic volume. In particular, the statistics highlight a problem for vehicles turning left across the path of a cyclist on their inside. In this article, we present a camera-based system to detect and track cyclists in the blind spot. The system uses boosted classifiers and geometric constraints to detect cyclist wheels, and Canny edge detection to locate the ground contact point. The locations of these points are mapped into physical coordinates using a calibration system based on the ground plane. A Kalman Filter is used to track and predict the future motion of the cyclist. Full-scale tests were conducted using a construction vehicle fitted with two cameras, and the results compared with measurements from an ultrasonic-sensor system. Errors were comparable to the ultrasonic system, with average error standard deviation of 4.3 cm when the cyclist was 1.5 m from the heavy goods vehicles, and 7.1 cm at a distance of 1 m. When results were compared to manually extracted cyclist position data, errors were less than 4 cm at separations of 1.5 and 1 m. Compared to the ultrasonic system, the camera system requires simple hardware and can easily differentiate cyclists from stationary or moving background objects such as parked cars or roadside furniture. However, the cameras suffer from reduced robustness and accuracy at close range and cannot operate in low-light conditions. C. Anatomical connectivity patterns predict face selectivity in the fusiform gyrus
A fundamental assumption in neuroscience is that brain structure determines function. Accordingly, functionally distinct regions of cortex should be structurally distinct in their connections to other areas. We tested this hypothesis in relation to face selectivity in the fusiform gyrus. By using only structural connectivity, as measured through diffusion-weighted imaging, we were able to predict functional activation to faces in the fusiform gyrus. These predictions outperformed two control models and a standard group-average benchmark. The structure–function relationship discovered from the initial participants was highly robust in predicting activation in a second group of participants, despite differences in acquisition parameters and stimuli. This approach can thus reliably estimate activation in participants who cannot perform functional imaging tasks and is an alternative to group-activation maps. Additionally, we identified cortical regions whose connectivity was highly influential in predicting face selectivity within the fusiform, suggesting a possible mechanistic architecture underlying face processing in humans.United States.
