Sculplexity: Sculptures of Complexity using 3D printing

We show how to convert models of complex systems such as 2D cellular automata into a 3D printed object. Our method takes into account the limitations inherent to 3D printing processes and materials. Our approach automates the greater part of this task, bypassing the use of CAD software and the need for manual design. As a proof of concept, a physical object representing a modified forest fire model was successfully printed. Automated conversion methods similar to the ones developed here can be used to create objects for research, for demonstration and teaching, for outreach, or simply for aesthetic pleasure. As our outputs can be touched, they may be particularly useful for those with visual disabilities.Comment: Free access to article on European Physics Letter

Making a national atlas of population by computer

    Get PDF
This paper describes the conceptual and practical problems encountered and solved in producing a multi-colour atlas of population characteristics in Great Britain. The atlas itself is in A4 format; it consists of some thirty-four maps of Great Britain in four colours and the same number of regional maps, together with descriptive text. All maps were plotted on a laser plotter with a resolution of 127 microns. The paper describes how mapping of ratios, such as percentages, was found to be highly misleading and describes the novel probability mapping solution adopted, based on the signed chi-square statistic. In addition, the rationale for selecting the class intervals and for selecting colour schemes is described

Defining Markets That Involve Multi-Sided Platform Businesses: An Empirical Framework With an Application to Google's Purchase of DoubleClick

    Get PDF
A multi-sided platform (MSP) serves as an intermediary for two or more groups of customers who are linked by indirect network effects. Recent research has found that MSPs are significant in many industries and that some standard economic results, such as the Lerner Index, do not apply to them, in material ways, without some significant modification to take linkages between the multiple sides into account. This article extends several key tools used for the analysis of mergers to situations in which one or more of the suppliers are MSPs. It shows that the application of traditional tools to mergers involving MSPs results in biases the direction of which depends on the particular tool being used and other conditions. It also extends these tools to the analysis of the merger of MSPs. The techniques are illustrated with an application to an acquisition by Google in the online advertising industry.

Electric potential distributions at the interface between plasmasheet clouds

    Get PDF
At the interface between two plasma clouds with different densities, temperatures, and/or bulk velocities, there are large charge separation electric fields which can be modeled in the framework of a collisionless theory for tangential discontinuities. Two different classes of layers were identified: the first one corresponds to (stable) ion layers which are thicker than one ion Lamor radius; the second one corresponds to (unstable) electron layers which are only a few electron Larmor radii thick. It is suggested that these thin electron layers with large electric potential gradients (up to 400 mV/m) are the regions where large-amplitude electrostatic waves are spontaneously generated. These waves scatter the pitch angles of the ambient plasmasheet electron into the atmospheric loss cone. The unstable electron layers can therefore be considered as the seat of strong pitch angle scattering for the primary auroral electrons

    Mars Observer

    Get PDF
The Mars Observer Mission will deliver a single spacecraft to Mars for an extended orbital study of the planet's surface, atmosphere, and gravitational and magnetic fields. A flight profile is given, and information is presented in tabular form on the following topics: Deep Space Network support; compatibility tests, frequency assignments, telemetry, command, and tracking support responsibility

On Normal ordering and Canonical transformations in Thermal Field Theory

    Get PDF
We look at a real scalar field in thermal equilibrium in the context of the new normal ordering and field split defined by Evans and Steer. We show that the field split defines a natural canonical transformation, but that this transformation differs from others known in thermal field theory.Comment: 13 pages, LaTeX. Wick's Theorem for non-symmetric normal ordered products and contractions

    Get PDF
We consider arbitrary splits of field operators into two parts, and use the corresponding definition of normal ordering introduced by Evans and Steer. In this case the normal ordered products and contractions have none of the special symmetry properties assumed in existing proofs of Wick's theorem. Despite this, we prove that Wick's theorem still holds in its usual form as long as the contraction is a c-number. Wick's theorem is thus shown to be much more general than existing derivations suggest, and we discuss possible simplifying applications of this result.Comment: 17 page

    Cold cathode gauge experiment (ALSEP)

    Get PDF
Cold cathode ionization gages were left on the lunar surface as part of ALSEP (Apollo Lunar Surface Experiment Package) on Apollo missions 12, 14, and 15. An instrument prepared for Apollo 13 did not reach the surface because of the abort of that mission. The gages that reached the lunar surface measured the amounts of gas present in the vicinity of the ALSEP sites. The observed daytime gas concentrations were initially about two orders of magnitude greater than the nighttime observations; this was due to contamination of the landing area by the Apollo operations and equipment, and the daytime measurements showed a decrease with time characterized by a time constant of a few months
