Exploring the proposed DSM-5 diagnostic threshold and severity scale for the alcohol use disorder
Aims :¦Several studies have questioned the validity of separating the diagnosis of alcohol abuse from that of alcohol dependence, and the DSM-5 task force has proposed combining the criteria from these two diagnoses to assess a single category of alcohol use disorders (AUD). Furthermore, the DSM-5 task force has proposed including a new 2-symptom threshold and a severity scale based on symptom counts for the AUD diagnosis. The current study aimed to examine these modifications in a large population-based sample.¦Method :¦Data stemmed from an adult sample (N=2588 ; mean age 51.3 years (s.d.: 0.2), 44.9% female) of current and lifetime drinkers from the PsyCoLaus study, conducted in the Lausanne area in Switzerland. AUDs and validating variables were assessed using a semi-structured diagnostic interview for the assessment of alcohol¦and other major psychiatric disorders. First, the adequacy of the proposed 2- symptom threshold was tested by comparing threshold models at each possible cutoff and a linear model, in relation to different validating variables. The model with the smallest Akaike Criterion Information (AIC) value was established as the best¦model for each validating variable. Second, models with varying subsets of individual AUD symptoms were created to assess the associations between each symptom and the validating variables. The subset of symptoms with the smallest AIC value was established as the best subset for each validator.¦Results :¦1) For the majority of validating variables, the linear model was found to be the best fitting model. 2) Among the various subsets of symptoms, the symptoms most frequently associated with the validating variables were : a) drinking despite having knowledge of a physical or psychological problem, b) having had a persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control drinking and c) craving. The¦least frequent symptoms were : d) drinking in larger amounts or over a longer period than was intended, e) spending a great deal of time in obtaining, using or recovering from alcohol use and f) failing to fulfill major role obligations.¦Conclusions :¦The proposed DSM-5 2-symptom threshold did not receive support in our data. Instead, a linear AUD diagnosis was supported with individuals receiving an increasingly severe AUD diagnosis. Moreover, certain symptoms were more frequently associated with the validating variables, which suggests that these¦symptoms should be considered as more severe

Attention bias dynamics and symptom severity during and following CBT for social anxiety disorder
Objective: Threat-related attention bias figures prominently in contemporary accounts of the maintenance of anxiety disorders, yet longitudinal intervention research relating attention bias to anxiety symptom severity is limited. Capitalizing on recent advances in the conceptualization and measurement of attention bias, we aimed to examine the relation between attention bias, indexed using trial-level bias scores (TLBSs) to quantify temporal dynamics reflecting dysregulation of attentional processing of threat (as opposed to aggregated mean bias scores) and social anxiety symptom severity over the course of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and 1-month follow-up. Method: Adults with social anxiety disorder (N = 39) assigned to either yohimbine-or placebo-augmented CBT completed measures of attention bias and social anxiety symptom severity weekly throughout CBT (5 sessions) and at 1-week and 1-month posttreatment. Results: TLBSs of attention bias temporal dynamics showed stronger psychometric properties than mean aggregated scores and were highly interrelated, in line with within-subject temporal variability fluctuating in time between attentional overengagement and strategic avoidance from threat. Attention bias toward threat and temporal variability in attention bias (i.e., attentional dysregulation), but not attention bias away from threat, significantly reduced over the course of CBT. Cross-lag analyses revealed no evidence of a causal relation between reductions in attentional dysregulation leading to symptom severity reduction, or vice versa. Observed relations did not vary as a function of time. Conclusions: We found no evidence for attentional dysregulation as a causal mechanism for symptom reduction in CBT for social anxiety disorders. Implications for future research are discussed
Self-consistent predictions for LIER-like emission lines from post-AGB stars
Early type galaxies (ETGs) frequently show emission from warm ionized gas.
These Low Ionization Emission Regions (LIERs) were originally attributed to a
central, low-luminosity active galactic nuclei. However, the recent discovery
of spatially-extended LIER emission suggests ionization by both a central
source and an extended component that follows a stellar-like radial
distribution. For passively-evolving galaxies with old stellar populations, hot
post-Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars are the only viable extended source of
ionizing photons. In this work, we present the first prediction of LIER-like
emission from post-AGB stars that is based on fully self-consistent stellar
evolution and photoionization models. We show that models where post-AGB stars
are the dominant source of ionizing photons reproduce the nebular emission
signatures observed in ETGs, including LIER-like emission line ratios in
standard optical diagnostic diagrams and H equivalent widths of order
0.1-3 angstroms. We test the sensitivity of LIER-like emission to the details
of post-AGB models, including the mass loss efficiency and convective mixing
efficiency, and show that line strengths are relatively insensitive to post-AGB
timescale variations. Finally, we examine the UV-optical colors of the models
and the stellar populations responsible for the UV-excess observed in some
ETGs. We find that allowing as little as 3% of the HB population to be
uniformly distributed to very hot temperatures (30,000 K) produces realistic UV
colors for old, quiescent ETGs.Comment: ApJ accepted. 20 pages, 8 figure
Does d-cycloserine facilitate the effects of homework compliance on social anxiety symptom reduction?
BACKGROUND: Prior studies examining the effect of d-cycloserine (DCS) on homework compliance and outcome in cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) have yielded mixed results. The aim of this study was to investigate whether DCS facilitates the effects of homework compliance on symptom reduction in a large-scale study for social anxiety disorder (SAD). METHODS: 169 participants with generalized SAD received DCS or pill placebo during 12-session exposure-based group CBT. Improvements in social anxiety were assessed by independent raters at each session using the Liebowitz social anxiety scale (LSAS). RESULTS: Controlling for LSAS at the previous session, and irrespective of treatment condition, greater homework compliance in the week prior related to lower LSAS at the next session. However, DCS did not moderate the effect of homework compliance and LSAS, LSAS on homework compliance, or the overall augmenting effect of DCS on homework compliance. Furthermore, LSAS levels were not predictive of homework compliance in the following week. CONCLUSION: The findings support the general benefits of homework compliance on outcome, but not a DCS-augmenting effect. The comparably small number of DCS-enhanced sessions in this study could be one reason for the failure to find a facilitating effect of DCS
Strangeness in Neutron Stars
It is generally agreed on that the tremendous densities reached in the
centers of neutron stars provide a high-pressure environment in which several
intriguing particles processes may compete with each other. These range from
the generation of hyperons to quark deconfinement to the formation of kaon
condensates and H-matter. There are theoretical suggestions of even more exotic
processes inside neutron stars, such as the formation of absolutely stable
strange quark matter. In the latter event, neutron stars would be largely
composed of strange quark matter possibly enveloped in a thin nuclear crust.
This paper gives a brief overview of these striking physical possibilities with
an emphasis on the role played by strangeness in neutron star matter, which
constitutes compressed baryonic matter at ultra-high baryon number density but
low temperature which is no accessible to relativistic heavy ion collision
