Developing generative themes for community action
This chapter explores a range of participative methods for working with groups to achieve social change in community settings. It draws on the work of Paulo Freire and examines how workers can facilitate processes of dialogue and critical reflection which enable local people to develop solutions to the issues they are dealing with

MORALE AND FACULTY DEVELOPMENT IN AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS
Morale and faculty development are closely related. The agricultural economics profession must decide what it is about. There is room to practice the principle of comparative advantage and allow a degree of specialization in teaching, extension, and research. To continue in the role of an applied discipline, there must also be an opportunity for the young professional to establish rapport with, and understanding of, the private sector and the policy-making arena. If that is to happen, there must be encouragement in the institutional setting and by faculty colleagues who respect the importance of investment in building rapport and in establishing credibility. If that environment is present, morale should be good and faculty development will occur.Morale, Faculty development, Comparative advantage, Research, Extension, Teaching, Balance, Teaching/Communication/Extension/Profession,

Geodesic systems of tunnels in hyperbolic 3-manifolds
It is unknown whether an unknotting tunnel is always isotopic to a geodesic
in a finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifold. In this paper, we address the
generalization of this problem to hyperbolic 3-manifolds admitting tunnel
systems. We show that there exist finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds with a
single cusp, with a system of at least two tunnels, such that all but one of
the tunnels come arbitrarily close to self-intersecting. This gives evidence
that systems of unknotting tunnels may not be isotopic to geodesics in tunnel
number n manifolds. In order to show this result, we prove there is a
geometrically finite hyperbolic structure on a (1;n)-compression body with a
system of core tunnels such that all but one of the core tunnels
self-intersect.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures. V2 contains minor updates to references and

Development of signal processing algorithms for ultrasonic detection of coal seam interfaces
A pattern recognition system is presented for determining the thickness of coal remaining on the roof and floor of a coal seam. The system was developed to recognize reflected pulse echo signals that are generated by an acoustical transducer and reflected from the coal seam interface. The flexibility of the system, however, should enable it to identify pulse-echo signals generated by radar or other techniques. The main difference being the specific features extracted from the recorded data as a basis for pattern recognition
