    Quantum Control Theory for State Transformations: Dark States and their Enlightenment

    For many quantum information protocols such as state transfer, entanglement transfer and entanglement generation, standard notions of controllability for quantum systems are too strong. We introduce the weaker notion of accessible pairs, and prove an upper bound on the achievable fidelity of a transformation between a pair of states based on the symmetries of the system. A large class of spin networks is presented for which this bound can be saturated. In this context, we show how the inaccessible dark states for a given excitation-preserving evolution can be calculated, and illustrate how some of these can be accessed using extra catalytic excitations. This emphasises that it is not sufficient for analyses of state transfer in spin networks to restrict to the single excitation subspace.     BirdsbesafeĀ® collar cover reduces bird predation by domestic cats (Felis catus)

    The domestic cat (Felis catus) is one of the worldā€™s most damaging invasive species, especially threatening to local bird populations. This study examined the efficacy of the BirdsbesafeĀ® collar cover at reducing predation rates by household cats on avian populations. The vivid colours of the BirdsbesafeĀ® collar cover are assumed to alert nearby birds to the catā€™s presence, allowing them to escape safely. Overall, 19 cats were trialled over 8Ā weeks and the BirdsbesafeĀ® collar cover resulted in a reduction of 78% in the number of birds killed. Further research is required into owner attitudes to collars in order to examine whether these collarā€based devices could be widely adopted.PostprintPeer reviewe

    The third way: spermcast mating in sessile marine invertebrates

    Marine invertebrates belonging to a broad range of taxa disperse aquatic spermatozoa to fertilize eggs that are retained rather than spawned. We outline the occurrence of this mechanism, which we refer to as spermcast mating, and identify tentative generalizations relating to it. Contrasts are drawn where appropriate with broadcast spawning of both eggs and sperm for external fertilization, and with copulation or pseudocopulation. Spermcast mating may involve the gradual accumulation of long-lived spermatozoa from dilute suspension, probably during suspension feeding, and the subsequent storage of spermatozoa by the recipient (acting female) prior to fertilization. This process may involve extensive contact between spermatozoa and recipient (maternal) tissue. Mating may be influenced by compatibility systems, and receipt of compatible allosperm may trigger female investment, giving apparent scope for sexual conflict over levels of maternal investment. External fertilization of cohesive egg masses remaining close to the acting female may appear somewhat intermediate between spermcast mating and broadcast spawning but, while it may be possible to envisage a continuum between the 2 modes, the end points are distinct, commonplace, and involve contrasting reproductive characteristics. Three variants of the typical pattern of spermcast mating are briefly discussed: the spawning of zygotes (rather than the more usual brooding of progeny), polyembryony, and the dispersal of spermatophores rather than individual spermatozo

    Predators on marine fish farms in Tasmania

    Marine aquaculture of the salmonids atlantic salmon (Salrno salar) and rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) is a rapidly growing industry in Tasmania. There is considerable damage to the fish on these farms by avian and mammalian predators. The mode by which these predators attack the fish on the farms allows for practical methods to reduce the loss of fish. Physically excluding predators from the fish is ultimately the only way to prevent this loss entirely. A total of six predators that interact with the farms are described and the necessity for the protection methods to be incorporated into the design of the farms prior to farm development is emphasised

    A study of the strength of lime treated soft clays

    In this paper, a comprehensive study of the strength of lime treated soft clays is made. There are three major factors that affect the strength of the soils; they are the lime content, curing time, and curing temperature. The variations of soil strengths with the three factors are analysed and quantified via proposed empirical equations. These equations are verified against experimental data. Finally, a general strength criterion, unifying the influence of all the three factors into a single equation, is proposed. The capacity of the general equation is also demonstrated. It is seen that the proposed strength equations can provide a useful means for predicting the strength of lime treated clays under various conditions
