    Quantum Control Theory for State Transformations: Dark States and their Enlightenment

    For many quantum information protocols such as state transfer, entanglement transfer and entanglement generation, standard notions of controllability for quantum systems are too strong. We introduce the weaker notion of accessible pairs, and prove an upper bound on the achievable fidelity of a transformation between a pair of states based on the symmetries of the system. A large class of spin networks is presented for which this bound can be saturated. In this context, we show how the inaccessible dark states for a given excitation-preserving evolution can be calculated, and illustrate how some of these can be accessed using extra catalytic excitations. This emphasises that it is not sufficient for analyses of state transfer in spin networks to restrict to the single excitation subspace.     The third way: spermcast mating in sessile marine invertebrates

    Marine invertebrates belonging to a broad range of taxa disperse aquatic spermatozoa to fertilize eggs that are retained rather than spawned. We outline the occurrence of this mechanism, which we refer to as spermcast mating, and identify tentative generalizations relating to it. Contrasts are drawn where appropriate with broadcast spawning of both eggs and sperm for external fertilization, and with copulation or pseudocopulation. Spermcast mating may involve the gradual accumulation of long-lived spermatozoa from dilute suspension, probably during suspension feeding, and the subsequent storage of spermatozoa by the recipient (acting female) prior to fertilization. This process may involve extensive contact between spermatozoa and recipient (maternal) tissue. Mating may be influenced by compatibility systems, and receipt of compatible allosperm may trigger female investment, giving apparent scope for sexual conflict over levels of maternal investment. External fertilization of cohesive egg masses remaining close to the acting female may appear somewhat intermediate between spermcast mating and broadcast spawning but, while it may be possible to envisage a continuum between the 2 modes, the end points are distinct, commonplace, and involve contrasting reproductive characteristics. Three variants of the typical pattern of spermcast mating are briefly discussed: the spawning of zygotes (rather than the more usual brooding of progeny), polyembryony, and the dispersal of spermatophores rather than individual spermatozo

    Main articleThe question of the origin of the Makapansgat Limeworks grey breccia is here considered from two viewpoints: (a) the accumulation of bones within a catchment area; and (b) the possible concentration of the bones in their final resting place. The potential role of hyaenas and porcupines as bone-accumulating agents is investigated. Nine categories of hyaena damage to bone surfaces could be distinguished on collections of bone taken from a series of recent hyaena breeding dens. All nine categories can be demonstrated in identical form on fossil bones from the grey breccia. It is concluded that carnivores have played a more substantial role as accumulators of the bones in this breccia than has previously been acknowledged. Porcupines are excluded as major contributors to the grey breccia bone assemblage on the basis of the low percentage of porcupine-gnawed bones present compared with recent porcupine accumulations. Furthermore, the pattern of damage observed on porcupine-collected skeletal elements does not resemble that documented for the grey breccia. A 3-dimensional computer plot of the topography of the Limeworks travertine floor shows the presence of two larger and two smaller basins separated from each other by floor "highs". A floor "high" around the grey breccia is demonstrated and may have been a significant factor in bone concentration. Sedimentation within separate basins need -not necessarily have been synchronous or equivalent, and the practice of equating Members from one part of the cavern to another is questioned. Stereographic projections of the dip and strike orientations of the long axes of a number of in situ grey breccia bones in two separate areas indicate orientation patterns and imbrication. The results of the projections suggest that a combination of water current action and gravity may have been responsible for the present configuration of the bones.Non

    Predators on marine fish farms in Tasmania

    Marine aquaculture of the salmonids atlantic salmon (Salrno salar) and rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) is a rapidly growing industry in Tasmania. There is considerable damage to the fish on these farms by avian and mammalian predators. The mode by which these predators attack the fish on the farms allows for practical methods to reduce the loss of fish. Physically excluding predators from the fish is ultimately the only way to prevent this loss entirely. A total of six predators that interact with the farms are described and the necessity for the protection methods to be incorporated into the design of the farms prior to farm development is emphasised

    Rabies elimination research: juxtaposing optimism, pragmatism and realism

    More than 100 years of research has now been conducted into the prevention, control and elimination of rabies with safe and highly efficacious vaccines developed for use in human and animal populations. Domestic dogs are a major reservoir for rabies, and although considerable advances have been made towards the elimination and control of canine rabies in many parts of the world, the disease continues to kill tens of thousands of people every year in Africa and Asia. Policy efforts are now being directed towards a global target of zero human deaths from dog-mediated rabies by 2030 and the global elimination of canine rabies. Here we demonstrate how research provides a cause for optimism as to the feasibility of these goals through strategies based around mass dog vaccination. We summarize some of the pragmatic insights generated from rabies epidemiology and dog ecology research that can improve the design of dog vaccination strategies in low- and middle-income countries and which should encourage implementation without further delay. We also highlight the need for realism in reaching the feasible, although technically more difficult and longer-term goal of global elimination of canine rabies. Finally, we discuss how research on rabies has broader relevance to the control and elimination of a suite of diseases of current concern to human and animal health, providing an exemplar of the value of a ‘One Health’ approach

    In Vitro Interactions of Extracellular Histones with LDL Suggest a Potential Pro-Atherogenic Role

    BACKGROUND: Nuclear histones have previously been shown to aggregate LDL in vitro, suggestive of a possible pro-atherogenic role. Recent studies indicate that histones are released during acute inflammation, and therefore might interact with circulating lipoproteins in vivo. In view of the associative link between inflammation and cardiovascular disease, the behaviour of histones was investigated using in vitro models of LDL retention and foam cell formation. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Heparin agarose beads were used as a model of a matrix rich in sulphated glycosaminoglycans, to which histones bind strongly. Histone-modified beads were observed to pull down more LDL from solution than untreated beads, indicating that histones can function as bridging molecules, enhancing LDL retention. Furthermore, addition of heparin inhibited histone-induced aggregation of LDL. To model foam cell formation, murine RAW 264.7 macrophages were incubated for 24 h in the presence of LDL, histones, LDL plus histones or vehicle control. Cells incubated with LDL in the presence of histones accumulated significantly more intracellular lipid than with LDL or histone alone. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: These results are consistent with a potential pro-atherogenic role for extracellular histones, which should be investigated further
