Water use and grain yield response of rainfed soybean to tillage-mulch practices in southeastern Nigeria
Despite the agronomic, economic and food values of soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill), there is still dearth of information on the tillage need and the implications of surface mulch for the crop in the eastern part of the forest-savanna transition zone of Nigeria. This study was therefore carried out on a sandy loam Ultisol at Nsukka with a sub-humid climate, during 2006 and 2007 cropping seasons. Our objective was to devise an appropriate tillage method for the crop from evaluated effects of no-till (NT), conventional tillage (CT) and mulch on selected key agronomic indices. Each of the NT and the CT was either unmulched (U) or mulched (M) in a split-plot, giving four treatments/tillage methods (NTU, NTM, CTU and CTM) randomized in four blocks. Rainfall was more favorable in the first than in the second season. The mean seasonal soil water storage (range, 99-109 mm) within 0.5-m soil layer differed among the treatments (NTU < CTU < NTM = CTM). However, for the first and second seasons, both water use (582-616 and 667-709 mm respectively) and grain yield (0.71-0.81 and 1.22-1.91 Mg ha-1 respectively) were not different. Mulch lowered the crop water use but had no influence on grain yield. Water use efficiency was enhanced with mulch only in the second season. Although either of the two mulch treatments (NTM/CTM) would be suitable for growing soybean especially in years of unfavorably distributed rainfall, NTM is a more rational choice than CTM. Rainfall adequacy at the critical reproductive stage of the crop showed to be a more important yield factor than the tested tillage methods
Pattern Of Extremity Gunshot Injuries Seen In Lagos University Teaching Hospital,
Background: The rising incidence of gunshot injuries (GSI) remains one of the leading causes of death, long hospitalization and economic losses worldwide. This study was undertaken due to rising incidence of civilian GSI in Lagos, Nigeria.
Objective: To determine the epidemiological characteristics of extremity gunshot injuries in Lagos, Nigeria.
Methods: This three year crossectional study of extremity gunshot injuries was conducted at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Lagos, Nigeria between 1st January 2000 and 31st December 2002.
Results: Two hundred and fifty four patients with extremity gunshot injuries presented with 240 analyzed. Those brought in dead (BID) were excluded from the study. Ninety-five percent of the patients were males. One hundred and twenty six patients (52.5%) were in the 21 – 40 years age group. The patients were shot mainly (75%) at night and mostly (80%) by armed robbers. Shot guns were used in shooting 47.5% of patients.
Conclusion: The study showed that young adult males were more affected by GSI. Most of the shootings occurred at night by armed robbers.

Management of Giant Cell Tumour: A Nigerian Experience
Giant cell tumours (GCT) are the commonest bone tumours worldwide. It is rarely malignant but when it does it progresses to fibrosarcoma with high mortality. Otherwise it causes poor cosmesis, disability and pathological fractures.
A total of 19 cases of histologically established Giant cell tumour of the bone were reviewed prospectively in a 5 year study. 14 cases were benign, 4 malignant and one was a malignant transformation. Lesions around the knee accounted for 42.2% of the cases, but the radius was the commonest single bone affected with 26.3%.
Eleven patients had curettage, five of them had autogenous bone grafting while the remaining six had bone grafting and plate augmentation. One patient had fore-quarter amputation while seven had tumour resection.
There was no recurrence recorded among those that had currretage and autogenous bone grafting. 33% of those that had curettage and bone cementing as well as 16.6% of those that had resection presented with recurrence. One patient died within 3 months of surgery due to metastasis to the lungs, liver and spleen. Mean follow up was 9.2 months (range of 2 to 60 months). With early presentation, curretage and bone grafting is often effective; late presentation however has an increased risk of recurrence due to soft tissue involvement, dearth of investigative tools and financial constraints.

Challenges in the diagnosis and management of musculoskeletal tumours in Nigeria
The management of musculoskeletal tumours is important because of the high mortality rates associated with the available treatment modalities. A 5-year prospective study of bone and soft-tissue tumours is presented, along with the difficulties encountered in diagnosis and treatment. There were 71 patients (male:female ratio of 1.7:1, age range 5–85 years, mean age 32 years) with an average duration of 24.7 weeks (range 1 day to 34 years) before presentation. No patient had computed tomography (CT) scanning or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) due to financial constraints, 95% had biopsies and X-rays, 15% could afford chemotherapy/ror chemotherapy is a sad consequence. 50% agreed to amputation. In the soft-tissue sarcoma group, only one of three patients could pay for limb-sparing surgery. In the benign group, 65% had limb-sparing surgeries and 15% had amputation. Fifty percent (50%) of patients were lost to follow up within 3 months and 39% of the malignant group died within the same period. Musculoskeletal tumours are a reality in our environment and a significant portion of our population have financial limitations. Ignorance and cultural beliefs promote late presentation to our hospitals, which are poorly equipped to give optimal care, despite the presence of trained personnel
