On a Conjecture of Goriely for the Speed of Fronts of the Reaction--Diffusion Equation
In a recent paper Goriely considers the one--dimensional scalar
reaction--diffusion equation with a polynomial reaction
term and conjectures the existence of a relation between a global
resonance of the hamiltonian system and the asymptotic
speed of propagation of fronts of the reaction diffusion equation. Based on
this conjecture an explicit expression for the speed of the front is given. We
give a counterexample to this conjecture and conclude that additional
restrictions should be placed on the reaction terms for which it may hold.Comment: 9 pages Revtex plus 4 postcript figure
Analytical Investigation of Innovation Dynamics Considering Stochasticity in the Evaluation of Fitness
We investigate a selection-mutation model for the dynamics of technological
innovation,a special case of reaction-diffusion equations. Although mutations
are assumed to increase the variety of technologies, not their average success
("fitness"), they are an essential prerequisite for innovation. Together with a
selection of above-average technologies due to imitation behavior, they are the
"driving force" for the continuous increase in fitness. We will give analytical
solutions for the probability distribution of technologies for special cases
and in the limit of large times.
The selection dynamics is modelled by a "proportional imitation" of better
technologies. However, the assessment of a technology's fitness may be
imperfect and, therefore, vary stochastically. We will derive conditions, under
which wrong assessment of fitness can accelerate the innovation dynamics, as it
has been found in some surprising numerical investigations.Comment: For related work see http://www.helbing.or
The Speed of Fronts of the Reaction Diffusion Equation
We study the speed of propagation of fronts for the scalar reaction-diffusion
equation \, with . We give a new integral
variational principle for the speed of the fronts joining the state to
. No assumptions are made on the reaction term other than those
needed to guarantee the existence of the front. Therefore our results apply to
the classical case in , to the bistable case and to cases in
which has more than one internal zero in .Comment: 7 pages Revtex, 1 figure not include
Flame Enhancement and Quenching in Fluid Flows
We perform direct numerical simulations (DNS) of an advected scalar field
which diffuses and reacts according to a nonlinear reaction law. The objective
is to study how the bulk burning rate of the reaction is affected by an imposed
flow. In particular, we are interested in comparing the numerical results with
recently predicted analytical upper and lower bounds. We focus on reaction
enhancement and quenching phenomena for two classes of imposed model flows with
different geometries: periodic shear flow and cellular flow. We are primarily
interested in the fast advection regime. We find that the bulk burning rate v
in a shear flow satisfies v ~ a*U+b where U is the typical flow velocity and a
is a constant depending on the relationship between the oscillation length
scale of the flow and laminar front thickness. For cellular flow, we obtain v ~
U^{1/4}. We also study flame extinction (quenching) for an ignition-type
reaction law and compactly supported initial data for the scalar field. We find
that in a shear flow the flame of the size W can be typically quenched by a
flow with amplitude U ~ alpha*W. The constant alpha depends on the geometry of
the flow and tends to infinity if the flow profile has a plateau larger than a
critical size. In a cellular flow, we find that the advection strength required
for quenching is U ~ W^4 if the cell size is smaller than a critical value.Comment: 14 pages, 20 figures, revtex4, submitted to Combustion Theory and

Twisted and Nontwisted Bifurcations Induced by Diffusion
We discuss a diffusively perturbed predator-prey system. Freedman and
Wolkowicz showed that the corresponding ODE can have a periodic solution that
bifurcates from a homoclinic loop. When the diffusion coefficients are large,
this solution represents a stable, spatially homogeneous time-periodic solution
of the PDE. We show that when the diffusion coefficients become small, the
spatially homogeneous periodic solution becomes unstable and bifurcates into
spatially nonhomogeneous periodic solutions.
The nature of the bifurcation is determined by the twistedness of an
equilibrium/homoclinic bifurcation that occurs as the diffusion coefficients
decrease. In the nontwisted case two spatially nonhomogeneous simple periodic
solutions of equal period are generated, while in the twisted case a unique
spatially nonhomogeneous double periodic solution is generated through
period-doubling.

bifurcations; periodic solutions.Comment: 42 pages in a tar.gz file. Use ``latex2e twisted.tex'' on the tex

Spatial and spatio-temporal patterns in a cell-haptotaxis model
We investigate a cell-haptotaxis model for the generation of spatial and spatio-temporal patterns in one dimension. We analyse the steady state problem for specific boundary conditions and show the existence of spatially hetero-geneous steady states. A linear analysis shows that stability is lost through a Hopf bifurcation. We carry out a nonlinear multi-time scale perturbation procedure to study the evolution of the resulting spatio-temporal patterns. We also analyse the model in a parameter domain wherein it exhibits a singular dispersion relation

One-dimensional symmetry and Liouville type results for the fourth order Allen-Cahn equation in R
In this paper, we prove an analogue of Gibbons' conjecture for the extended
fourth order Allen-Cahn equation in R N , as well as Liouville type results for
some solutions converging to the same value at infinity in a given direction.
We also prove a priori bounds and further one-dimensional symmetry and rigidity
results for semilinear fourth order elliptic equations with more general
nonlinearities
Conditions for propagation and block of excitation in an asymptotic model of atrial tissue
Detailed ionic models of cardiac cells are difficult for numerical
simulations because they consist of a large number of equations and contain
small parameters. The presence of small parameters, however, may be used for
asymptotic reduction of the models. Earlier results have shown that the
asymptotics of cardiac equations are non-standard. Here we apply such a novel
asymptotic method to an ionic model of human atrial tissue in order to obtain a
reduced but accurate model for the description of excitation fronts. Numerical
simulations of spiral waves in atrial tissue show that wave fronts of
propagating action potentials break-up and self-terminate. Our model, in
particular, yields a simple analytical criterion of propagation block, which is
similar in purpose but completely different in nature to the `Maxwell rule' in
the FitzHugh-Nagumo type models. Our new criterion agrees with direct numerical
simulations of break-up of re-entrant waves.Comment: Revised manuscript submitted to Biophysical Journal (30 pages incl.
