Intellectual Disability Discrimination
A lack of understanding concerning individuals with intellectual disabilities has led to exaggerated fears and diminished expectations. Consequently, these individuals have faced social exclusion. Research reveals, however, that societal discrimination can be stunted when people are given both information about and contact with these individuals. This research provides the foundation for a film documentary that provides society with the information and contact required to cultivate positive, inclusive attitudes towards individuals with intellectual disabilities
Doing what others do: norms, science, and collective action on global warming
Does rhetoric highlighting social norms or mentioning science in a communication affect individuals’ beliefs about global warming and/or willingness to take action? We draw from framing theory and collective-interest models of action to motivate hypotheses that are tested in two large web-based survey-experiments using convenience samples. Our results show that attitudes about global warming, support for policies that would reduce carbon emissions, and behavioral intentions to take voluntary action are strongly affected by norm- and science-based interventions. This has implications for information campaigns targeting voluntary efforts to promote lifestyle changes that would reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Support for Free Trade: Self-Interest, Sociotropic Politics, and Out-Group Anxiety
Although it is widely acknowledged that an understanding of mass attitudes about trade is crucial to the political economy of foreign commerce, only a handful of studies have addressed this topic. These studies have focused largely on testing two models, both of which emphasize that trade preferences are shaped by how trade affects an individual\u27s income. The factor endowments or Heckscher-Ohlin model posits that these preferences are affected primarily by a person\u27s skills. The specific factors or Ricardo-Viner model posits that trade preferences depend on the industry in which a person works. We find little support for either of these models using two representative national surveys of Americans. The only potential exception involves the effects of education. Initial tests indicate that educational attainment and support for open trade are directly related, which is often interpreted as support for the Heckscher-Ohlin model. However, further analysis reveals that education\u27s effects are less representative of skill than of individuals\u27 anxieties about involvement with out-groups in their own country and beyond. Furthermore, we find strong evidence that trade attitudes are guided less by material self-interest than by perceptions of how the U.S. economy as a whole is affected by trade
Fluctuations and differential contraction during regeneration of Hydra vulgaris tissue toroids
We studied regenerating bilayered tissue toroids dissected from Hydra
vulgaris polyps and relate our macroscopic observations to the dynamics of
force-generating mesoscopic cytoskeletal structures. Tissue fragments undergo a
specific toroid-spheroid folding process leading to complete regeneration
towards a new organism. The time scale of folding is too fast for biochemical
signalling or morphogenetic gradients which forced us to assume purely
mechanical self-organization. The initial pattern selection dynamics was
studied by embedding toroids into hydro-gels allowing us to observe the
deformation modes over longer periods of time. We found increasing mechanical
fluctuations which break the toroidal symmetry and discuss the evolution of
their power spectra for various gel stiffnesses. Our observations are related
to single cell studies which explain the mechanical feasibility of the folding
process. In addition, we observed switching of cells from a tissue bound to a
migrating state after folding failure as well as in tissue injury.
We found a supra-cellular actin ring assembled along the toroid's inner edge.
Its contraction can lead to the observed folding dynamics as we could confirm
by finite element simulations. This actin ring in the inner cell layer is
assembled by myosin- driven length fluctuations of supra-cellular

Numerical observation of non-axisymmetric vesicles in fluid membranes
By means of Surface Evolver (Exp. Math,1,141 1992), a software package of
brute-force energy minimization over a triangulated surface developed by the
geometry center of University of Minnesota, we have numerically searched the
non-axisymmetric shapes under the Helfrich spontaneous curvature (SC) energy
model. We show for the first time there are abundant mechanically stable
non-axisymmetric vesicles in SC model, including regular ones with intrinsic
geometric symmetry and complex irregular ones. We report in this paper several
interesting shapes including a corniculate shape with six corns, a
quadri-concave shape, a shape resembling sickle cells, and a shape resembling
acanthocytes. As far as we know, these shapes have not been theoretically
obtained by any curvature model before. In addition, the role of the
spontaneous curvature in the formation of irregular crenated vesicles has been
studied. The results shows a positive spontaneous curvature may be a necessary

The effect of classroom diversity on tolerance and participation in England, Sweden and Germany
Ideological Labels in America
This paper extends Ellis and Stimson’s (Ideology in America. New York: Cambridge UniversityPress, 2012) study of the operational-symbolic paradox using issue-level measures of ideological incongruence based on respondent positions and symbolic labels for these positions across 14 issues. Like Ellis and Stimson, we find that substantial numbers—over 30 %—of Americans experience conflicted conservatism. Our issue-level data reveal, furthermore, that conflicted conservatism is most common on the issues of education and welfare spending. In addition, we also find that 20 % of Americans exhibit conflicted liberalism. We then replicate Ellis and Stimson’s finding that conflicted conservatism is associated with low sophistication and religiosity, but also find that it is associated with being socialized in a post-1960s generation and using Fox News as a main news source. Finally, we show the important role played by identities, with both conflicted conservatism and conflicted liberalism linked with partisan and ideological identities, and conflicted liberalism additionally associated with ethnic identities
Science and Management of Intermittent Rivers and Ephemeral Streams (SMIRES)
More than half of the global river network is composed of intermittent rivers and ephemeral streams (IRES), which are expanding in response to climate change and increasing water demands. After years of obscurity, the science of IRES has bloomed recently and it is being recognised that IRES support a unique and high biodiversity, provide essential ecosystem services and are functionally part of river networks and groundwater systems. However, they still lack protective and adequate management, thereby jeopardizing water resources at the global scale. This Action brings together hydrologists, biogeochemists, ecologists, modellers, environmental economists, social researchers and stakeholders from 14 different countries to develop a research network for synthesising the fragmented, recent knowledge on IRES, improving our understanding of IRES and translating this into a science-based, sustainable management of river networks. Deliverables will be provided through i) research workshops synthesising and addressing key challenges in IRES science, supporting research exchange and educating young researchers, and ii) researcher-stakeholder workshops translating improved knowledge into tangible tools and guidelines for protecting IRES and raising awareness of their importance and value in societal and decision-maker spheres. This Action is organized within six Working Groups to address: (i) the occurrence, distribution and hydrological trends of IRES; (ii) the effects of flow alterations on IRES functions and services; (iii) the interaction of aquatic and terrestrial biogeochemical processes at catchment scale; (iv) the biomonitoring of the ecological status of IRES; (v) synergies in IRES research at the European scale, data assemblage and sharing; (vi) IRES management and advocacy training
