    Robustness of Equations Under Operational Extensions

    Sound behavioral equations on open terms may become unsound after conservative extensions of the underlying operational semantics. Providing criteria under which such equations are preserved is extremely useful; in particular, it can avoid the need to repeat proofs when extending the specified language. This paper investigates preservation of sound equations for several notions of bisimilarity on open terms: closed-instance (ci-)bisimilarity and formal-hypothesis (fh-)bisimilarity, both due to Robert de Simone, and hypothesis-preserving (hp-)bisimilarity, due to Arend Rensink. For both fh-bisimilarity and hp-bisimilarity, we prove that arbitrary sound equations on open terms are preserved by all disjoint extensions which do not add labels. We also define slight variations of fh- and hp-bisimilarity such that all sound equations are preserved by arbitrary disjoint extensions. Finally, we give two sets of syntactic criteria (on equations, resp. operational extensions) and prove each of them to be sufficient for preserving ci-bisimilarity.Comment: In Proceedings EXPRESS'10, arXiv:1011.601

    Improving empathy of physicians through guided reflective writing

    Objectives: This study was designed to explore how guided reflective writing could evoke empathy and reflection in a group of practicing physicians. Methods: Total participants recruited included 40 staff physicians at Cleveland Clinic, a tertiary care academic medical center. Twenty physicians (intervention group) were assigned to participate in a 6-session faculty development program introducing narrative medicine and engaging in guided reflective writing. Ten physicians (comparison group 1) received the assigned course reading materials but did not participate in the course sessions. Ten physicians (comparison group 2) neither received the reading materials nor participated in the sessions. Qualitative analysis of the physicians\u27 reflective writings was performed to identify major themes. The Jefferson Scale of Empathy was administered three times during the course. Results: Qualitative analysis of physicians\u27 writings showed themes of both compassionate solidarity and detached concern. Exploration of negative emotions occurred more frequently than positive ones. The most common writing style was case presentation. A total of 36 staff physicians completed the Jefferson Scale of Empathy. Results of statistical analysis suggested an improvement in empathy in the intervention group at the end of the course (p \u3c 0 .05). Conclusions: These results suggest a faculty development program using guided narrative writing can promote reflection and may enhance empathy among practicing physicians. These findings should encourage medical educators to design additional strategies for enhancing reflection and empathic behavior in trainees and specifically practicing physicians who can role model these behaviors to achieve the ultimate goal of improving the quality of patient care

    The effect of curved tips on the dynamics of composite rotor blades

    In this paper, the dynamics of a tailored composite rotating blade with curved tips are investigated, with a view to improving the dynamic behaviour of the blade in flight. The blade tip is curved either in the out-of-plane or in the in-plane directions. The composite blade is modelled by using the exact beam formulation, and the cross-sectional properties of the blade are obtained using the variational asymptotic method. The resulting nonlinear partial differential equations are discretised using a time-space scheme, and the stationary and rotating frequencies of the blade are obtained from the eigenvalues of the linearised system. Three case studies are considered here each of them representing one of the main elastic couplings that might happen in a composite blade. These three elastic couplings are the flap-twist, lag-twist, and extension-twist couplings. All these couplings are very important in the blade design as they can affect the twist and hence the dynamics of the blade. The blade tip length and curvature value are two main parameters that this paper is focused on. It is shown that the curved tip of the blade affects the blade frequencies by adding extra couplings, and therefore could be used as a potential morphing concept for tuning the frequencies, enhancing the aeroelastic stability or performance of the blade in flight

    Hessian-based Similarity Metric for Multimodal Medical Image Registration

    One of the fundamental elements of both traditional and certain deep learning medical image registration algorithms is measuring the similarity/dissimilarity between two images. In this work, we propose an analytical solution for measuring similarity between two different medical image modalities based on the Hessian of their intensities. First, assuming a functional dependence between the intensities of two perfectly corresponding patches, we investigate how their Hessians relate to each other. Secondly, we suggest a closed-form expression to quantify the deviation from this relationship, given arbitrary pairs of image patches. We propose a geometrical interpretation of the new similarity metric and an efficient implementation for registration. We demonstrate the robustness of the metric to intensity nonuniformities using synthetic bias fields. By integrating the new metric in an affine registration framework, we evaluate its performance for MRI and ultrasound registration in the context of image-guided neurosurgery using target registration error and computation time

    ROS Based Multi-sensor Navigation of Intelligent Wheelchair

    Our society is moving towards an ageing society and the number of population with physical impairments and disabilities will increase dramatically. It is necessary to provide mobility support to these people so that they can live independently at home and integrated into the society. This paper presents a ROS (Robot Operating System) based multi-sensor navigation for an intelligent wheelchair that can help the elderly and disabled people. ROS provides an easy to use framework for rapid system development at a reduced cost. Some experimental results are given in the paper to demonstrate the feasibility and performance of the developed system

    Earthquake risk assessment using an integrated Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process with Artificial Neural Networks based on GIS: A case study of Sanandaj in Iran

    Earthquakes are natural phenomena, which induce natural hazard that seriously threatens urban areas, despite significant advances in retrofitting urban buildings and enhancing the knowledge and ability of experts in natural disaster control. Iran is one of the most seismically active countries in the world. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and analyze the extent of earthquake vulnerability in relation to demographic, environmental, and physical criteria. An earthquake risk assessment (ERA) map was created by using a Fuzzy-Analytic Hierarchy Process coupled with an Artificial Neural Networks (FAHP-ANN) model generating five vulnerability classes. Combining the application of a FAHP-ANN with a geographic information system (GIS) enabled to assign weights to the layers of the earthquake vulnerability criteria. The model was applied to Sanandaj City in Iran, located in the seismically active Sanandaj-Sirjan zone which is frequently affected by devastating earthquakes. The Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) model was implemented in the IDRISI software and 250 points were validated for grades 0 and 1. The validation process revealed that the proposed model can produce an earthquake probability map with an accuracy of 95%. A comparison of the results attained by using a FAHP, AHP and MLP model shows that the hybrid FAHP-ANN model proved flexible and reliable when generating the ERA map. The FAHP-ANN model accurately identified the highest earthquake vulnerability in densely populated areas with dilapidated building infrastructure. The findings of this study are useful for decision makers with a scientific basis to develop earthquake risk management strategies
