    Tracking in dense environments and its inefficiency measurement using pixel dE/dxdE/dx

    We present a measurement of the charged particle reconstruction inefficiency inside of jet cores, using data collected by the ATLAS experiment in 2015 of pppp collisions produced at the LHC, at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The determination of this inefficiency is important for jet energy scale and mass calibration, as well as multiple other performance studies and analyses. A data driven method is used, where the fraction of lost particle tracks is determined from energy deposition dE/dxdE/dx in the pixel detector. The fraction of lost tracks is found to be less than 5%, which is an improvement since the previous study, and agrees well within systematic uncertainties with a Monte Carlo simulation.Comment: Presented at PIXEL 2016 and prepared for submission to JINS

    Intravascular migration of contraceptive implants: two more cases

    Cases: In addition to previously published case reports, further cases of intravascular migration of contraceptive implants have been identified from an information request to two national adverse reaction spontaneous reporting systems. We report on two new cases of insertion into the venous system with subsequent embolism to a pulmonary artery. Conclusion: Incorporating barium sulfate into the implant has facilitated diagnosis of these very rare adverse events with the initial diagnosis of embolism to the pulmonary arterial tree made by chest X-ray. Removal of an implant from a segmental branch of a pulmonary artery is technically challenging and not without risks. Unsuccessful removal appears to be preceded by a delay in diagnosis leading to endothelialization of the implant in the pulmonary arterial wall. Implications: Subdermal placement of contraceptive implants over the anterior surface of the biceps rather than in the sulcus between them biceps and triceps may negate this rare but reported risk

    Intraduodenal sarcoma recurrence of retroperitoneal origin: an unusual cause for a duodenal obstruction.

    Soft tissue sarcomas are uncommon tumors, and intraduodenal soft tissue sarcoma manifestation is even more rare. Only three cases of intraduodenal sarcomas have been reported in the literature thus far. Here, we report a case of an intraduodenal recurrence of a retroperitoneal sarcoma causing bowel obstruction. This unusual recurrence pattern likely relates to the patient's previous resection and radiation treatment, and highlights the benefits, limitations and follow-up strategies after multimodality treatment

    Fgf10 is required for specification of non-sensory regions of the cochlear epithelium

    pre-printThe vertebrate inner ear is a morphologically complex sensory organ comprised of two compartments, the dorsal vestibular apparatus and the ventral cochlear duct, required for motion and sound detection, respectively. Fgf10, in addition to Fgf3, is necessary for the earliest stage of otic placode induction, but continued expression of Fgf10 in the developing otic epithelium, including the prosensory domain and later in Kolliker's organ, suggests additional roles for this gene during morphogenesis of the labyrinth. While loss of Fgf10 was implicated previously in semicircular canal agenesis, we show that Fgf10-/+ embryos also exhibit a reduction or absence of the posterior semicircular canal, revealing a dosage-sensitive requirement for FGF10 in vestibular development. In addition, we show that Fgf10-/- embryos have previously unappreciated defects of cochlear morphogenesis, including a somewhat shortened duct, and, surprisingly, a substantially narrower duct. The mutant cochlear epithelium lacks Reissner's membrane and a large portion of the outer sulcus--two non-contiguous, non-sensory domains. Marker gene analyses revealed effects on Reissner's membrane as early as E12.5-E13.5 and on the outer sulcus by E15.5, stages when Fgf10 is expressed in close proximity to Fgfr2b, but these effects were not accompanied by changes in epithelial cell proliferation or death. These data indicate a dual role for Fgf10 in cochlear development: to regulate outgrowth of the duct and subsequently as a bidirectional signal that sequentially specifies Reissner's membrane and outer sulcus non-sensory domains. These findings may help to explain the hearing loss sometimes observed in LADD syndrome subjects with FGF10 mutations
