    Building Campus-Wide Information Literacy Programs

    The reality of building a campus-wide information literacy program may vary from institution to institution but working programs all share important similarities. Librarians from California State University System campuses (Northridge and Los Angeles) - and Rider University will discuss their approaches and successes at both garnering support for and developing campus-wide information literacy programs that incorporate information literacy student learning outcomes into required General Education programming. The session will focus on how active service on university-wide curriculum, assessment and general education committees directly impacted and informed their libraries and campus information literacy programs and pedagogies. The presenters will demonstrate how their successful curricular models, assessment efforts and overall approaches engage campus stakeholders in terms of (re)defining definitions and understanding of information literacy, and raising campus awareness about how information literacy curriculum programming strengthens the life-long learning goals inherent in undergraduate General Education programming. The following processes and strategies that promote campus discussions and the integration of such curricular integration into new and revised required curriculum will be examined: the development of higher cognitive level information literacy goals and objectives that coordinate with disciplinary and campus assessment goals, curriculum mapping strategies and other assessment efforts, and discipline based approaches to developing classroom and online learning models (LMS, tutorials, distance curriculum delivery etc) that incorporate approved campus information literacy student learning outcomes. A discussion of how their successes will impact the management and delivery of their library instruction programs in terms of increased demand and larger class sizes will also be examined

    A third-generation, fast, low cost, multispectral recognition system (MIDAS) able to keep pace with the large quantity and high rates of data acquisition from large regions with present and projected sensots is described. The program can process a complete ERTS frame in forty seconds and provide a color map of sixteen constituent categories in a few minutes. A principle objective of the MIDAS program is to provide a system well interfaced with the human operator and thus to obtain large overall reductions in turn-around time and significant gains in throughput. The hardware and software generated in the overall program is described. The system contains a midi-computer to control the various high speed processing elements in the data path, a preprocessor to condition data, and a classifier which implements an all digital prototype multivariate Gaussian maximum likelihood or a Bayesian decision algorithm. Sufficient software was developed to perform signature extraction, control the preprocessor, compute classifier coefficients, control the classifier operation, operate the color display and printer, and diagnose operation

    The first true coaxial 18-fold segmented n-type HPGe prototype detector produced by Canberra-France for the GERDA neutrinoless double beta-decay project was tested both at Canberra-France and at the Max-Planck-Institut fuer Physik in Munich. The main characteristics of the detector are given and measurements concerning detector properties are described.     Circle talks as situated experiential learning: Context, identity, and knowledgeability in \u27learning from reflection\u27

    This article presents research that used ethnographic and sociolinguistic methods to study ways participants learn through reflection when carried out as a “circle talk.” The data indicate that participants in the event (a) invoked different contextual frames that (b) implicated them in various identity positions, which (c) affected how they could express their knowledge. These features worked together to generate socially shared meanings that enabled participants to jointly achieve conceptualization—the ideational role “reflection” is presumed to play in the experiential learning process. The analysis supports the claim that participants generate new knowledge in reflection, but challenges individualistic and cognitive assumptions regarding how this occurs. The article builds on situated views of experiential learning by showing how knowledge can be understood as socially shared and how learning and identity formation are mutually entailing processes
