A novel laser ranging system for measurement of ground-to-satellite distances
A technique was developed for improving the precision of laser ranging measurements of ground-to-satellite distances. The method employs a mode-locked laser transmitter and utilizes an image converter tube equipped with deflection plates in measuring the time of flight of the laser pulse to a distant retroreflector and back. Samples of the outgoing and returning light pulses are focussed on the photocathode of the image converter tube, whose deflection plates are driven by a high-voltage 120 MHz sine wave derived from a very stable oscillator. From the relative positions of the images produced at the output phosphor by the two light pulses, it is possible to make a precise determination of the fractional amount by which the time of flight exceeds some large integral multiple of the period of the deflection sinusoid
Improving empathy of physicians through guided reflective writing
Objectives: This study was designed to explore how guided reflective writing could evoke empathy and reflection in a group of practicing physicians.
Methods: Total participants recruited included 40 staff physicians at Cleveland Clinic, a tertiary care academic medical center. Twenty physicians (intervention group) were assigned to participate in a 6-session faculty development program introducing narrative medicine and engaging in guided reflective writing. Ten physicians (comparison group 1) received the assigned course reading materials but did not participate in the course sessions. Ten physicians (comparison group 2) neither received the reading materials nor participated in the sessions. Qualitative analysis of the physicians\u27 reflective writings was performed to identify major themes. The Jefferson Scale of Empathy was administered three times during the course.
Results: Qualitative analysis of physicians\u27 writings showed themes of both compassionate solidarity and detached concern. Exploration of negative emotions occurred more frequently than positive ones. The most common writing style was case presentation. A total of 36 staff physicians completed the Jefferson Scale of Empathy. Results of statistical analysis suggested an improvement in empathy in the intervention group at the end of the course (p \u3c 0 .05).
Conclusions: These results suggest a faculty development program using guided narrative writing can promote reflection and may enhance empathy among practicing physicians. These findings should encourage medical educators to design additional strategies for enhancing reflection and empathic behavior in trainees and specifically practicing physicians who can role model these behaviors to achieve the ultimate goal of improving the quality of patient care
Test results of a Stirling engine utilizing heat exchanger modules with an integral heat pipe
The Heat Pipe Stirling Engine (HP-1000), a free-piston Stirling engine incorporating three heat exchanger modules, each having a sodium filled heat pipe, has been tested at the NASA-Lewis Research Center as part of the Civil Space Technology Initiative (CSTI). The heat exchanger modules were designed to reduce the number of potential flow leak paths in the heat exchanger assembly and incorporate a heat pipe as the link between the heat source and the engine. An existing RE-1000 free-piston Stirling engine was modified to operate using the heat exchanger modules. This paper describes heat exchanger module and engine performance during baseline testing. Condenser temperature profiles, brake power, and efficiency are presented and discussed
High-mobility indirect excitons in wide single quantum well
Indirect excitons (IXs) are bound pairs of electrons and holes confined in
spatially separated layers. We present wide single quantum well (WSQW)
heterostructures with high IX mobility, spectrally narrow IX emission,
voltage-controllable IX energy, and long and voltage-controllable IX lifetime.
This set of properties shows that WSQW heterostructures provide an advanced
platform both for studying basic properties of IXs in low-disorder environments
and for the development of high mobility excitonic devices

A protocol paper on the preservation of identity: understanding the technology adoption patterns of older adults with age-related vision loss (ARVL)
There are a growing number of older adults with age-related vision loss (ARVL) for whom technology holds promise in supporting their engagement in daily activities. Despite the growing presence of technologies intended to support older adults with ARVL, there remains high rates of abandonment. This phenomenon of technology abandonment may be partly explained by the concept of self-image, meaning that older adults with ARVL avoid the use of particular technologies due to an underlying fear that use of such technologies may mark them as objects of pity, ridicule, and/or stigmatization. In response to this, the proposed study aims to understand how the decision-making processes of older adults with ARVL, as it relates to technology adoption, is influenced by the negotiation of identity. The study protocol will justify the need for this critical ethnographic study, unpack the theoretical underpinnings of this work, detail the sampling/recruitment strategy, describe the methods which included a home tour, go-along, and semi-structured in-depth interview, as well as the collective approach taken to analyze the data. The protocol concludes by examining the ethical tensions associated with this study, including a focus on the methods adopted as well as the ethical challenges inherent when working with an older adult population experiencing vision loss
Ternary cluster decay within the liquid drop model
Longitudinal ternary and binary fission barriers of Ar, Ni and
Cf nuclei have been determined within a rotational liquid drop model
taking into account the nuclear proximity energy. For the light nuclei the
heights of the ternary fission barriers become competitive with the binary ones
at high angular momenta since the maximum lies at an outer position and has a

Numerical Simulation of Vortex Crystals and Merging in N-Point Vortex Systems with Circular Boundary
In two-dimensional (2D) inviscid incompressible flow, low background
vorticity distribution accelerates intense vortices (clumps) to merge each
other and to array in the symmetric pattern which is called ``vortex
crystals''; they are observed in the experiments on pure electron plasma and
the simulations of Euler fluid. Vortex merger is thought to be a result of
negative ``temperature'' introduced by L. Onsager. Slight difference in the
initial distribution from this leads to ``vortex crystals''. We study these
phenomena by examining N-point vortex systems governed by the Hamilton
equations of motion. First, we study a three-point vortex system without
background distribution. It is known that a N-point vortex system with boundary
exhibits chaotic behavior for N\geq 3. In order to investigate the properties
of the phase space structure of this three-point vortex system with circular
boundary, we examine the Poincar\'e plot of this system. Then we show that
topology of the Poincar\'e plot of this system drastically changes when the
parameters, which are concerned with the sign of ``temperature'', are varied.
Next, we introduce a formula for energy spectrum of a N-point vortex system
with circular boundary. Further, carrying out numerical computation, we
reproduce a vortex crystal and a vortex merger in a few hundred point vortices
system. We confirm that the energy of vortices is transferred from the clumps
to the background in the course of vortex crystallization. In the vortex
merging process, we numerically calculate the energy spectrum introduced above
and confirm that it behaves as k^{-\alpha},(\alpha\approx 2.2-2.8) at the

We study pocket universes which have zero cosmological constant and
non-trivial boundary topology. These arise from bubble collisions in eternal
inflation. Using a simplified dust model of collisions we find that boundaries
of any genus can occur. Using a radiation shell model we perform analytic
studies in the thin wall limit to show the existence of geometries with a
single toroidal boundary. We give plausibility arguments that higher genus
boundaries can also occur. In geometries with one boundary of any genus a
timelike observer can see the entire boundary. Geometries with multiple
disconnected boundaries can also occur. In the spherical case with two
boundaries the boundaries are separated by a horizon. Our results suggest that
the holographic dual description for eternal inflation, proposed by Freivogel,
Sekino, Susskind and Yeh, should include summation over the genus of the base
space of the dual conformal field theory. We point out peculiarities of this
