Material Flow Analysis: Outcome Focus (MFA:OF) for Elucidating the Role of Infrastructure in the Development of a Liveable City
Engineered infrastructures (i.e., utilities, transport & digital) underpin modern society. Delivering services via these
is especially challenging in cities where differing infrastructures form a web of interdependencies. There must be a
step change in how infrastructures deliver services to cities, if those cities are to be liveable in the future (i.e., provide
for citizen wellbeing, produce less CO2 & ensure the security of the resources they use). Material Flow Analysis
(MFA) is a useful methodology for understanding how infrastructures transfer resources to, within and from cities
and contribute to the city’s metabolism. Liveable Cities, a five-year research programme was established to identify
& test radical engineering interventions leading to liveable cities of the future. In this paper, the authors propose an
outcome-focussed variation on the MFA methodology (MFA: OF), evidenced through work on the resource flows of
Birmingham, UK. These flows include water, energy, food & carbon-intensive materials (e.g., steel, paper, glass), as
well as their associated waste. The contribution MFA: OF makes to elucidating the interactions & interdependencies
between the flows is highlighted and suggestions are made for how it can contribute to the (radical) rethinking of the
engineered infrastructure associated with such flow
A polyphonic acoustic vortex and its complementary chords
Using an annular phased array of eight loudspeakers, we generate sound beams that simultaneously contain phase singularities at a number of different frequencies. These frequencies correspond to different musical notes and the singularities can be set to overlap along the beam axis, creating a polyphonic acoustic vortex. Perturbing the drive amplitudes of the speakers means that the singularities no longer overlap, each note being nulled at a slightly different lateral position, where the volume of the other notes is now nonzero. The remaining notes form a tri-note chord. We contrast this acoustic phenomenon to the optical case where the perturbation of a white light vortex leads to a spectral spatial distribution
Characterization of high-dimensional entangled systems via mutually unbiased measurements
Mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) play a key role in many protocols in quantum
science, such as quantum key distribution. However, defining MUBs for arbitrary
high-dimensional systems is theoretically difficult, and measurements in such
bases can be hard to implement. We show experimentally that efficient quantum
state reconstruction of a high-dimensional multi-partite quantum system can be
performed by considering only the MUBs of the individual parts. The state
spaces of the individual subsystems are always smaller than the state space of
the composite system. Thus, the benefit of this method is that MUBs need to be
defined for the small Hilbert spaces of the subsystems rather than for the
large space of the overall system. This becomes especially relevant where the
definition or measurement of MUBs for the overall system is challenging. We
illustrate this approach by implementing measurements for a high-dimensional
system consisting of two photons entangled in the orbital angular momentum
(OAM) degree of freedom, and we reconstruct the state of this system for
dimensions of the individual photons from d=2 to 5.Comment: 8 page

Fahrtbericht der "Poseidon"-Reise 101b [POS101/b] in den Nordostatlantik vom 20.6.83 - 24.7.83
Die Fahrt l0lb des FS "Poseidon" fand zwischen dem 20.6. und 24.7.83 im Nordatlantik statt. Es wurden Schnitte gefahren von Lissabon nach Ponta
Delgada, von Ponta Delgada bis 54°50'N, 37°28'W und zurück und von Ponta Delgada über OWS "R" zum Englischen Kanal (Abbildung 1.1). Es wurde auch eine Vermessung der Polarfront bei 52°N, 33~ durchgeführt (Abbildung 1.2).
Während der ganzen Zeit wurden hydrographische Parameter mit einem geschleppten Fisch-System gemessen. Strömungen an der Meeresoberfläche
wurden mit einem elektromagnetischen Log und Strömungen in der Tiefe mit einem akustischen Stromprofiler gemessen. Ein Verzeichnis der gefahrenen Schnitte ist in Anhang 1 gegeben
Aeolian processes aboard a space station: Saltation and particle trajectory analysis
The Carousel wind tunnel (CWT) proposed to study aeolian processes aboard a space station consists of two concentric rotating drums. The space between the two drums comprises the wind tunnel test section. Differential rates of rotation of the two drums would provide a wind velocity with respect to either drum surface. Preliminary results of measured velocity profiles made in a CWT prototype indicate that the wall bounded boundary layer profiles are suitable to simulate flat plate turbulent boundary layer flow. The two dimensional flat plate Cartesian coordinate equations of motion of a particle moving through the air are explained. In order to assess the suitability of CWT in the analysis of the trajectories of windblown particles, a series of calculations were conducted comparing cases for gravity with those of zero gravity. Results from the calculations demonstrate that a wind tunnel of the carousel design could be fabricted to operate in a space station environment and that experiments could be conducted which would yield significant results contributing to the understanding of the physics of particle dynamics
