    Software engineering needs more and more to be supported by CASE tools. Since databases are at the heart of information systems, they deserve a particular attention. More and more CASE tools allow method engineers to implement their own methodology and they allow users to record all their actions, with their rationales, in order to improve the quality of the design and the quality of the documentation of the design. DBMAIN is such a database oriented tool with a method description and a documentation generation facilities. But it has its particularities like its procedural non-deterministic Method Description Language, its well integrated multilevel histories and its userfriendly methodological engine

    La evaluación tradicionalmente se ha centrado en la etapa final del proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje llevando en muchos casos a que los alumnos se enfoquen más en aprobar la asignatura que en lograr un aprendizaje significativo. Sin embargo, el docente no debe sólo evaluar al final del curso, sino que debe hacerlo en cada uno de los bloques de conocimiento para facilitar el aprovechamiento y el aprendizaje progresivo de los contenidos de la asignatura. Al aplicar la evaluación continua, el profesor puede detectar los problemas de aprendizaje del estudiante y realizar una valoración integral del proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje. El objetivo del trabajo fue evaluar la identificar los temas que presentan más dificultades en el proceso de enseñanza – aprendizaje mediante la evaluación continua. Se implementó un proceso de evaluación continua con la finalidad de facilitar la asimilación y el desarrollo progresivos de los contenidos de la asignatura Climatología correspondiente al primer cuatrimestre del segundo año de la carrera de Ingeniería Agronómica. Se utilizó como fuente de datos un cuestionario estructurado, al inicio de la clase práctica, se evalúan los fundamentos teóricos a emplearse en el práctico. Éstas evaluaciones constituyen el 30% de la nota del parcial correspondiente.En el presente trabajo se presentan los resultados observados a lo largo de 7 ciclos lectivos (2012 a 2018). Las unidades que presentaron menor porcentaje de acierto fueron Bio y Agrometeorología, Radiación y Balance Hidrológico (con 42, 47 y 47%, respectivamente) y aquellas de mejor desempeño fueron Introducción, Vientos y Heladas (con 59; 60 y 64%, respectivamente). Los temas con menores porcentajes de aciertos pueden ser debidos a dificultad y el tiempo de aprendizaje. La evaluación continua le permite al estudiante recibir información sobre su ritmo de aprendizaje, y puede de esta manera reorientar su aprendizaje.     A proposal for selective resuscitation of adult cardiac arrest patients in a pandemic

    Allocation of limited resources in pandemics begs for ethical guidance. The issue of ventilator allocation in pandemics has been reviewed by many medical ethicists, but as localities activate crisis standards of care, and health care workers are infected from patient exposure, the decision to pursue cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) must also be examined to better balance the increased risks to healthcare personnel with the very low resuscitation rates of patients infected with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19). A crisis standard of care that is equitable, transparent, and mindful of both human and physical resources will lessen the impact on society in this era of COVID‐19. This paper builds on previous work of ventilator allocation in pandemic crises to propose a literature‐based, justice‐informed ethical framework for selecting treatment options for CPR.     To Vax or Not to Vax: Predictors of Anti-Vax Attitudes and COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy Prior to Widespread Vaccine Availability

    The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is a highly contagious disease responsible for millions of deaths worldwide. Effective vaccines against COVID-19 are now available, however, an extreme form of vaccine hesitancy known as anti-vax attitudes challenge vaccine acceptance and distribution efforts. To understand these anti-vax attitudes and their associated psychological characteristics, we examined several predictors of vaccine hesitancy for COVID-19 and anti-vax attitudes generally. We surveyed 1004 adults (M = 47.0 years, SD = 17.1 years, range 18–98 years) in September-October 2020 across the United States (51% female, 49% male; 76.5% White, 23.5% non-White), prior to widespread availability of the COVID-19 vaccines. Attitudes toward vaccinations were influenced by a variety of factors, especially political attitudes. We should therefore anticipate and attempt to mitigate these challenges to achieving widespread vaccination to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and other communicable diseases

    Measuring Progress in Robotics: Benchmarking and the ‘Measure-Target Confusion’

    While it is often said that in order to qualify as a true science robotics should aspire to reproducible and measurable results that allow benchmarking, I argue that a focus on benchmarking will be a hindrance for progress. Several academic disciplines that have been led into pursuing only reproducible and measurable ‘scientific’ results—robotics should be careful not to fall into that trap. Results that can be benchmarked must be specific and context-dependent, but robotics targets whole complex systems independently of a specific context—so working towards progress on the technical measure risks missing that target. It would constitute aiming for the measure rather than the target: what I call ‘measure-target confusion’. The role of benchmarking in robotics shows that the more general problem to measure progress towards more intelligent machines will not be solved by technical benchmarks; we need a balanced approach with technical benchmarks, real-life testing and qualitative judgment

    The effect of distance on reaction time in aiming movements

    Target distance affects movement duration in aiming tasks but its effect on reaction time (RT) is poorly documented. RT is a function of both preparation and initiation. Experiment 1 pre-cued movement (allowing advanced preparation) and found no influence of distance on RT. Thus, target distance does not affect initiation time. Experiment 2 removed pre-cue information and found that preparing a movement of increased distance lengthens RT. Experiment 3 explored movements to targets of cued size at non-cued distances and found size altered peak speed and movement duration but RT was influenced by distance alone. Thus, amplitude influences preparation time (for reasons other than altered duration) but not initiation time. We hypothesise that the RT distance effect might be due to the increased number of possible trajectories associated with further targets: a hypothesis that can be tested in future experiments

    Successful management of a pandemic or disaster requires implementation of preexisting plans to minimize loss of life and maintain control. Managing the expected surges in intensive care capacity requires strategic planning from a systems perspective and includes focused intensive care abilities and requirements as well as all individuals and organizations involved in hospital and regional planning. The suggestions in this article are important for all involved in a large-scale disaster or pandemic, including front-line clinicians, hospital administrators, and public health or government officials. Specifically, this article focuses on surge logistics—those elements that provide the capability to deliver mass critical care.The Surge Capacity topic panel developed 23 key questions focused on the following domains: systems issues; equipment, supplies, and pharmaceuticals; staffing; and informatics. Literature searches were conducted to identify studies upon which evidence-based recommendations could be made.This article presents 22 suggestions pertaining to surge capacity mass critical care, including requirements for equipment, supplies, and pharmaceuticals; staff preparation and organization; methods of mitigating overwhelming patient loads; the role of deployable critical care services; and the use of transportation assets to support the surge response
