    Senegalese Parent, Family, and Community Engagement in Education: An Ubuntu-Inspired Inquiry

    The relationship between families and schools, and the importance of parents and families to a child’s academic success is well documented internationally. However, the development of frameworks, theories, policies, and programs has not resulted in an increase in parent or family engagement in public schools, nor has it remedied the historical alienation and marginalization of families of color in the United States; positive comprehensive programs in communities of color at the middle and high school levels often seem to be missing. Because of African American families’ cultural connection to countries in Africa resulting from the Atlantic Slave Trade, I used the indigenous framework Ubuntu (Metz, 2007), along with Barton et al.’s (2004) Ecologies of Parental Engagement and Epstein’s (1995) framework of Six Types of Involvement to guide this qualitative case study that examined the nature of the role of parents, families, and village members in the education of their high school students in Senegal, West Africa. Data from semi-structured interviews with parents, students, family and community members, teachers, and administrators of Dekka high school (a pseudonym), show that the people of Dekka seem to have relationships, beliefs, and ways of being that encourage parent, family, and community engagement, and empower them to advocate for resources for their high school students. The findings suggest that, ultimately, developing and fostering authentic relationships with stakeholders is important.     Developing and Retaining High-Potential Non-Academic Employees in Private Higher Education Institutions to Create Sustainable Non-Academic Leadership Pipelines

    This qualitative multiple case study explored the perspectives of non-academic employees in private higher education institutions (HEIs) in the Northeast United States on the availability of formal career pathing, professional development opportunities, and succession planning impacting engagement and retention. The researcher conducted semi-structured one-on-one interviews with 20 non-academic employees across five private higher education institutions in various career stages and divisions, including human resources, student affairs, facilities, academic affairs, information technology, and development. The researcher also used the 2022 College and University Professional Association of Human Resources (CUPA-HR) employee retention survey to cross-reference, triangulate, and validate findings. The findings revealed that HEIs should implement inclusive strategic talent management and practices like formalized career pathing and succession planning to positively impact the retention of non-academic employees, creating leadership pipelines and continuity. The results also revealed that HEIs should refine and revitalize institutional values, norms, leadership behaviors, and adequate resource allocation to create inclusive cultures where non-academic employees feel a sense of fair treatment and consistency in the employee experience. The researcher used the study\u27s findings to propose practical recommendations to help HEIs enhance non-academic employees\u27 career trajectories and employee experience

    NUMERICAL MODELING OF THE DYNAMIC RESPONSE OF A MULTI-BILINEAR-SPRING SUPPORT SYSTEM

    The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer is an International Space Station Experiment that features a unique nonlinear support system with no previous flight heritage. The experiment consists of multiple straps with piecewise-linear stiffness curves that support a cryogenic magnet in three-dimensional space inside of a vacuum chamber. The stiffness curves for each strap are essentially bilinear and switch between two distinct slopes at a specified displacement. This highly nonlinear support system poses many questions in regards to feasible computational methods of analysis and possible response behavior. This thesis develops a numerical model for a multi-bilinear-spring support system motivated by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer design. Methods of analysis applied to the single bilinear oscillator served as the foundation of the model developed in this thesis. The model is developed using MATLAB and proves to be more computationally efficient than ANSYS finite element software. Numerical simulations contained herein demonstrate the variety of response behaviors possible in a multi-bilinear-spring support system, thus aiding future endeavors which may use a support system similar to the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer.     A proposed testing scheme is described for obtaining data on the effects of surface roughness and surface energy on insect adhesion. The road test apparatus is discussed as well as surface preparation techniques. Uncoated and polymer coated metal substrates were analyzed by SEM/ESCA/IRS before and following collision with insects. Critical surface tensions of unexposed Nyebar and poly sulfone coatings were 10 and 33 dynes/cm, respectively, as determined from contact angles. A total of 95% of insect residues collected belong to order Diptera. Significantly less insect debris was detected on the coated plates as compared to the uncoated plates. Minimal contamination at the 5 nm level of both coated and uncoated plates occurs even after hours of exposure to road conditions as determined by ESCA analysis. The presence of nitrogen detected by ESCA on exposed plates is unequivocal evidence for insect residues left on plates
