Lipschitz optimization methods for fitting a sum of damped sinusoids to a series of observations
A general nonlinear regression model is considered in the form of fitting a sum of damped sinusoids to a series of non-uniform observations. The problem of parameter estimation in this model is important in many applications like signal processing. The corresponding continuous optimization problem is typically difficult due to the high multiextremal character of the objective function. It is shown how Lipschitz-based deterministic methods can be well-suited for studying these challenging global optimization problems, when a limited computational budget is given and some guarantee of the found solution is required

Novel Branches of (0,2) Theories
We show that recently proposed linear sigma models with torsion can be
obtained from unconventional branches of conventional gauge theories. This
observation puts models with log interactions on firm footing. If non-anomalous
multiplets are integrated out, the resulting low-energy theory involves log
interactions of neutral fields. For these cases, we find a sigma model geometry
which is both non-toric and includes brane sources. These are heterotic sigma
models with branes. Surprisingly, there are massive models with compact complex
non-Kahler target spaces, which include brane/anti-brane sources. The simplest
conformal models describe wrapped heterotic NS5-branes. We present examples of

General Supersymmetric Solutions of Five-Dimensional Supergravity
The classification of 1/4-supersymmetric solutions of five dimensional gauged
supergravity coupled to arbitrary many abelian vector multiplets, which was
initiated in hep-th/0401129, is completed. The structure of all solutions for
which the Killing vector constructed from the Killing spinor is null is
investigated in both the gauged and the ungauged theories and some new

Effect of human rotavirus vaccine on severe diarrhea in African infants
BACKGROUND: Rotavirus is the most common cause of severe gastroenteritis among young children worldwide. Data are needed to assess the efficacy of the rotavirus vaccine in African children. METHODS: We conducted a randomized, placebo-controlled, multicenter trial in South Africa (3166 infants; 64.1% of the total) and Malawi (1773 infants; 35.9% of the total) to evaluate the efficacy of a live, oral rotavirus vaccine in preventing severe rotavirus gastroenteritis. Healthy infants were randomly assigned in a 1:1:1 ratio to receive two doses of vaccine (in addition to one dose of placebo) or three doses of vaccine — the pooled vaccine group — or three doses of placebo at 6, 10, and 14 weeks of age. Episodes of gastroenteritis caused by wild-type rotavirus during the first year of life were assessed through active follow-up surveillance and were graded with the use of the Vesikari scale. RESULTS: A total of 4939 infants were enrolled and randomly assigned to one of the three groups; 1647 infants received two doses of the vaccine, 1651 infants received three doses of the vaccine, and 1641 received placebo. Of the 4417 infants included in the per-protocol efficacy analysis, severe rotavirus gastroenteritis occurred in 4.9% of the infants in the placebo group and in 1.9% of those in the pooled vaccine group (vaccine efficacy, 61.2%; 95% confidence interval, 44.0 to 73.2). Vaccine efficacy was lower in Malawi than in South Africa (49.4% vs. 76.9%); however, the number of episodes of severe rotavirus gastroenteritis that were prevented was greater in Malawi than in South Africa (6.7 vs. 4.2 cases prevented per 100 infants vaccinated per year). Efficacy against all-cause severe gastroenteritis was 30.2%. At least one serious adverse event was reported in 9.7% of the infants in the pooled vaccine group and in 11.5% of the infants in the placebo group. CONCLUSIONS: Human rotavirus vaccine significantly reduced the incidence of severe rotavirus gastroenteritis among African infants during the first year of life. Vanishing Preons in the Fifth Dimension
We examine supersymmetric solutions of N=2, D=5 gauged supergravity coupled
to an arbitrary number of abelian vector multiplets using the spinorial
geometry method. By making use of methods developed in hep-th/0606049 to
analyse preons in type IIB supergravity, we show that there are no solutions

Self-interacting Elko dark matter with an axis of locality
This communication is a natural and nontrivial continuation of the 2005 work
of Ahluwalia and Grumiller on Elko. Here we report that Elko breaks Lorentz
symmetry in a rather subtle and unexpected way by containing a `hidden'
preferred direction. Along this preferred direction, a quantum field based on
Elko enjoys locality. In the form reported here, Elko offers a mass dimension
one fermionic dark matter with a quartic self-interaction and a preferred axis
of locality. The locality result crucially depends on a judicious choice of

Cosmological solutions from fake N=2 EYM supergravity
We characterise the (fake) supersymmetric solutions of Wick-rotated N=2 d=4
gauged supergravity coupled to non-Abelian vector multiplets. In the time-like
case we obtain generalisations of Kastor & Traschen's cosmological black holes:
they have a specific time-dependence and the base-space must be 3-dimensional
hyperCR/Gauduchon-Tod space. In the null-case, we find that the metric has a
holonomy contained in Sim(2), give a general characterisation of the solutions,
and give some examples. Finally, we point out that in some cases the solutions
we found are non-BPS solutions to N=2 d=4 supergravity coupled to vector
