Assisted Cycling Therapy for Persons with Down Syndrome — Implications for Improvements in Cognitive Functioning

    Get PDF
To date, there are few, if any, behavioral or exercise interventions that have been shown effective in improving cognitive functioning in adolescents with Down syndrome (DS). Exercise is a logical answer because it has been repeatedly shown to improve cognitive and physical and mental health in typical populations. However, current exercise recommendations for persons with DS vary greatly. Recommendations are often nonspecific in terms of the type or intensity of exercise, and results on improvement of cognitive functioning are equivocal. This chapter will report on preliminary data of an 8 week intervention of assisted versus voluntary cycling exercise on cognitive and health functions in adolescents with DS. Assisted Cycling Therapy (ACT) is innovative and important because it is predicted to enhance neurogenesis, which in turn may improve multiple central nervous system functions related comorbid conditions in adolescents with DS

Investigating the feasibility and acceptability of the HOLOBalance system compared with standard care in older adults at risk for falls: study protocol for an assessor blinded pilot randomised controlled study

INTRODUCTION: Approximately one in three of all older adults fall each year, with wide ranging physical, psychosocial and healthcare-related consequences. Exercise-based interventions are the cornerstone for falls prevention programmes, yet these are not consistently provided, do not routinely address all components of the balance system and are often not well attended. The HOLOBalance system provides an evidence-based balance training programme delivered to patients in their home environment using a novel technological approach including an augmented reality virtual physiotherapist, exergames and a remote monitoring system. The aims of this proof-of-concept study are to (1) determine the safety, acceptability and feasibility of providing HOLOBalance to community dwelling older adults at risk for falls and (2) provide data to support sample size estimates for a future trial. METHODS: A single (assessor) blinded pilot randomised controlled proof of concept study. 120 participants will be randomised to receive an 8-week home exercise programme consisting of either: (1) HOLOBalance or (2) The OTAGO Home Exercise Programme. Participants will be required to complete their exercise programme independently under the supervision of a physiotherapist. Participants will have weekly telephone contact with their physiotherapist, and will receive home visits at weeks 0, 3 and 6. Outcome measures of safety, acceptability and feasibility, clinical measures of balance function, disability, balance confidence and cognitive function will be assessed before and immediately after the 8 week intervention. Acceptability and feasibility will be explored using descriptive statistics, and trends for effectiveness will be explored using general linear model analysis of variance. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This study has received institutional ethical approvals in Germany (reference: 265/19), Greece (reference: 9769/24-6-2019) and the UK (reference: 19/LO/1908). Findings from this study will be submitted for peer-reviewed publications. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT04053829. PROTOCOL VERSION: V.2, 20 January 2020

Presence of Candida zemplinina in Sicilian Musts and Selection of a Strain for Wine Mixed Fermentations

    Get PDF
The purpose of this work was to investigate the presence of C. zemplinina yeasts in Sicilian musts andgrapes and to identify strains of oenological interest. We report on the taxonomical reclassificationof Candida yeast isolates from Sicilian musts and on the selection of one strain of oenological interest(Cz3), based on mixed micro-fermentation experiments in sterile Nero d’Avola musts. Our results showthat Candida zemplinina is abundant in Sicilian grapes and musts, and that the Cz3 strain is suitablefor Candida zemplinina/Saccharomyces cerevisiae mixed fermentations. The higher glycerol content andthe lower ethanol level stood out as the most promising features of the wines obtained upon sequentialinoculation of the Cz3 and (S. cerevisiae) NDA21 yeast starters. We therefore have isolated a Sicilian Czstrain endowed with very promising features for the future development of mixed fermentation protocols

Neural network implementation for the prediction of load curves of a flat head indenter on hot aluminum alloy

The indentation test performed by means of a flat-ended indenter is a valuable non-destructive method for assessment of metals at a local scale. Particularly, from the indentation curves it is possible to achieve several mechanical properties. The aim of this paper is the implementation of an artificial neural network for the prediction of the indentation load as a function of the penetration depth for an aluminium substrate. In particular, the neural network is addressed to the mechanical characterization of the bulk in function of temperature and indentation rate. The results obtained showed a high accuracy in curves prediction

A Smartphone Application Designed to Engage the Elderly in Home-Based Rehabilitation

    Get PDF
As life expectancy increases, it is imperative that the elderly take advantage of the benefits of technology to remain active and independent. Mobile health applications are widely used nowadays as they promote a healthy lifestyle and self-management of diseases, opening new horizons in the interactive health service delivery. However, adapting these applications to the needs and requirements of the elderly is still a challenge. This article presents a smartphone application that is part of a multifactorial intervention to support older people with balance disorders. The application aims to enable users to self-evaluate their activity and progress, to communicate with each other and, through strategically selected motivational features, to engage with the system with undiminished interest for a long period of time. Mock-up interfaces were evaluated in semi-structured focus groups and interviews that were performed across three European countries. Further evaluation in the form of four pilot studies with 160 participants will be performed and qualitative and quantitative measures will be used to process the feedback about the use of the application

Candida zemplinina for Production of Wines with Less Alcohol and More Glycerol

We developed a new protocol for winery mixed fermentations, using the selected Candida zemplinina yeaststrain Cz3. The results of a two-year study, in which red musts (Merlot in 2010; Merlot, Nero d’Avolaand Frappato in 2011) were inoculated with Cz3, is discussed. These wines were compared with winesobtained by inoculation with commercial Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast strains (NDA21 and AR06 in2010; NDA21 in 2011), or with those obtained by spontaneous fermentation (only in 2011). The inoculationof Cz3 always resulted in a two-phase fermentation: the first phase was driven by the C. zemplinina strain, while the second was dominated by the indigenous S. cerevisiae yeasts coming from the grapes and/or thewinery. In both years the Cz3 wines contained less alcohol and more glycerol than those made with thecommercial yeast strains or those obtained by spontaneous fermentation. Triangle tests showed that asensorial difference between wines could only be achieved through the utilisation of Cz3

The epidemiology of Varicella Zoster Virus infection in Italy

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The epidemiological importance of varicella and zoster and the availability of an efficacious and safe vaccine have led to an important international debate regarding the suitability of mass vaccination. The objective of the study was to describe the epidemiology of varicella and zoster in Italy and to determine whether there have been changes with respect to observations provided by an analogous study conducted 8 years ago, in order to define the most appropriate vaccination strategy.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A number of data sources were evaluated, a cross-sectional population-based seroprevalence study was conducted on samples collected in 2004, and the results were compared with data obtained in 1996.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The data from active and passive surveillance systems confirm that varicella is a widespread infectious disease which mainly affects children. VZV seroprevalence did not substantially differ from that found in the previous study. The sero-epidemiological profile in Italy is different from that in other European countries. In particular, the percentage of susceptible adolescents is at least nearly twice as high as in other European countries and in the age group 20–39 yrs, approximately 9% of individuals are susceptible to VZV.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The results of this study can contribute to evaluating the options for varicella vaccination. It is possible that in a few years, in all Italian Regions, there will exist the conditions necessary for implementing a mass vaccination campaign and that the large-scale availability of MMRV tetravalent vaccines will facilitate mass vaccination.</p
