    Merging and fragmentation in the Burgers dynamics

    We explore the noiseless Burgers dynamics in the inviscid limit, the so-called ``adhesion model'' in cosmology, in a regime where (almost) all the fluid particles are embedded within point-like massive halos. Following previous works, we focus our investigations on a ``geometrical'' model, where the matter evolution within the shock manifold is defined from a geometrical construction. This hypothesis is at variance with the assumption that the usual continuity equation holds but, in the inviscid limit, both models agree in the regular regions. Taking advantage of the formulation of the dynamics of this ``geometrical model'' in terms of Legendre transforms and convex hulls, we study the evolution with time of the distribution of matter and the associated partitions of the Lagrangian and Eulerian spaces. We describe how the halo mass distribution derives from a triangulation in Lagrangian space, while the dual Voronoi-like tessellation in Eulerian space gives the boundaries of empty regions with shock nodes at their vertices. We then emphasize that this dynamics actually leads to halo fragmentations for space dimensions greater or equal to 2 (for the inviscid limit studied in this article). This is most easily seen from the properties of the Lagrangian-space triangulation and we illustrate this process in the two-dimensional (2D) case. In particular, we explain how point-like halos only merge through three-body collisions while two-body collisions always give rise to two new massive shock nodes (in 2D). This generalizes to higher dimensions and we briefly illustrate the three-dimensional (3D) case. This leads to a specific picture for the continuous formation of massive halos through successive halo fragmentations and mergings.Comment: 21 pages, final version published in Phys.Rev.

    Microwave Electrodynamics of Electron-Doped Cuprate Superconductors

    We report microwave cavity perturbation measurements of the temperature dependence of the penetration depth, lambda(T), and conductivity, sigma(T) of Pr_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4-delta} (PCCO) crystals, as well as parallel-plate resonator measurements of lambda(T) in PCCO thin films. Penetration depth measurements are also presented for a Nd_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4-delta} (NCCO) crystal. We find that delta-lambda(T) has a power-law behavior for T<T_c/3, and conclude that the electron-doped cuprate superconductors have nodes in the superconducting gap. Furthermore, using the surface impedance, we have derived the real part of the conductivity, sigma_1(T), below T_c and found a behavior similar to that observed in hole-doped cuprates.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 1 table.     Magnetic Field Dependence of Electronic Specific Heat in Pr_{1.85} Ce_{0.15} CuO_4

    The specific heat of electron-doped Pr_{1.85} Ce_{0.15} CuO_4 single crystals is reported for the temperature range 2 - 10 K and magnetic field range 0 - 10 T. A non-linear magnetic field dependence is observed for the field range 0 - 2 T. Our data supports a model with lines of nodes in the gap function of these superconductors. Theoretical calculations of the electronic specific heat for dirty d-wave, clean d-wave, and s-wave symmetries are compared to our data.Comment: 10 pages Latex and 4 eps figures, submitted to Phys.     Solitary waves of nonlinear nonintegrable equations

    Our goal is to find closed form analytic expressions for the solitary waves of nonlinear nonintegrable partial differential equations. The suitable methods, which can only be nonperturbative, are classified in two classes. In the first class, which includes the well known so-called truncation methods, one \textit{a priori} assumes a given class of expressions (polynomials, etc) for the unknown solution; the involved work can easily be done by hand but all solutions outside the given class are surely missed. In the second class, instead of searching an expression for the solution, one builds an intermediate, equivalent information, namely the \textit{first order} autonomous ODE satisfied by the solitary wave; in principle, no solution can be missed, but the involved work requires computer algebra.     Evidence of a d to s-wave pairing symmetry transition in the electron-doped cuprate superconductor Pr2x_{2-x}Cex_xCuO4_4

    We present point contact spectroscopy (PCS) data for junctions between a normal metal and the electron doped cuprate superconductor Pr2x_{2-x}Cex_xCuO4_4 (PCCO). For the underdoped compositions of this cuprate (x0.13x \sim 0.13) we observe a peak in the conductance-voltage characteristics of the point contact junctions. The shape and magnitude of this peak suggests the presence of Andreev bound states at the surface of underdoped PCCO which is evidence for a d-wave pairing symmetry. For overdoped PCCO (x0.17x \sim 0.17) the PCS data does not show any evidence of Andreev bound states at the surface suggesting an s-wave pairing symmetry.Comment: 4 pages Latex, 4 eps figures included.     Endograft-preserving therapy of a patient with Coxiella burnetii-infected abdominal aortic aneurysm: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p><it>Coxiella burnetii</it>, the causative agent of Q fever, may cause endocarditis and vascular infections that result in severe morbidity and mortality. We report a case of a <it>C. burnetii</it>-infected abdominal aorta and its management in a patient with a previous endovascular aortic aneurysm repair.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 62-year-old Caucasian man was admitted to our hospital three months after endovascular aortic aneurysm repair with a bifurcated stent graft. He had increasing abdominal complaints and general malaise. A computed tomography scan of his abdomen revealed several para-aneurysmal abscesses. Surgery was performed via midline laparotomy. The entire abdominal wall of his aneurysmal sac, including the abscesses, was removed. The vascular endoprosthesis showed no macroscopic signs of infection. The decision was made to leave the endograft in place because of the severe cardiopulmonary comorbidities, thereby avoiding suprarenal clamping and explantation of this device with venous reconstruction. The proximal and distal parts of the endograft were secured to the aortic wall and common iliac artery walls, respectively, to avoid future migration. Polymerase chain reaction for <it>C. burnetii </it>was positive in all specimens of aortic tissue. Specific antibiotic therapy was initiated. Our patient was discharged in good clinical condition after six days.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In our patient, the infection was limited to the abdominal aneurysm wall, which was removed, leaving the endograft in place. Vascular surgeons should be familiar with this bailout procedure in high-risk patients.</p

    Anisotropic conductivity of Nd_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4-\delta} films at submillimeter wavelengths

    The anisotropic conductivity of thin Nd1.85_{1.85}Ce0.15_{0.15}CuO4δ_{4-\delta} films was measured in the frequency range 8 cm1<ν<^{-1}<\nu < 40 cm1^{-1} and for temperatures 4 K <T<300<T<300 K. A tilted sample geometry allowed to extract both, in-plane and c-axis properties. The in-plane quasiparticle scattering rate remains unchanged as the sample becomes superconducting. The temperature dependence of the in-plane conductivity is reasonably well described using the Born limit for a d-wave superconductor. Below T_{{\rm C}%} the c-axis dielectric constant ϵ1c\epsilon_{1c} changes sign at the screened c-axis plasma frequency. The temperature dependence of the c-axis conductivity closely follows the linear in T behavior within the plane.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Campbell Penetration Depth of a Superconductor in the Critical State

    The magnetic penetration depth λ(T,H,j)\lambda(T,H,j) was measured in the presence of a slowly relaxing supercurrent, jj. In single crystal Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8\mathrm{Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8} below approximately 25 K, λ(T,H,j)\lambda(T,H,j) is strongly hysteretic. We propose that the irreversibility arises from a shift of the vortex position within its pinning well as jj changes. The Campbell length depends upon the ratio j/jcj/j_{c} where jcj_{c} is the critical current defined through the Labusch parameter.     Epidemiology of Coxiella burnetii infection in Africa: a OneHealth systematic review

    Background: Q fever is a common cause of febrile illness and community-acquired pneumonia in resource-limited settings. Coxiella burnetii, the causative pathogen, is transmitted among varied host species, but the epidemiology of the organism in Africa is poorly understood. We conducted a systematic review of C. burnetii epidemiology in Africa from a “One Health” perspective to synthesize the published data and identify knowledge gaps.&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt; Methods/Principal Findings: We searched nine databases to identify articles relevant to four key aspects of C. burnetii epidemiology in human and animal populations in Africa: infection prevalence; disease incidence; transmission risk factors; and infection control efforts. We identified 929 unique articles, 100 of which remained after full-text review. Of these, 41 articles describing 51 studies qualified for data extraction. Animal seroprevalence studies revealed infection by C. burnetii (&#8804;13%) among cattle except for studies in Western and Middle Africa (18–55%). Small ruminant seroprevalence ranged from 11–33%. Human seroprevalence was &#60;8% with the exception of studies among children and in Egypt (10–32%). Close contact with camels and rural residence were associated with increased seropositivity among humans. C. burnetii infection has been associated with livestock abortion. In human cohort studies, Q fever accounted for 2–9% of febrile illness hospitalizations and 1–3% of infective endocarditis cases. We found no studies of disease incidence estimates or disease control efforts.&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt; Conclusions/Significance: C. burnetii infection is detected in humans and in a wide range of animal species across Africa, but seroprevalence varies widely by species and location. Risk factors underlying this variability are poorly understood as is the role of C. burnetii in livestock abortion. Q fever consistently accounts for a notable proportion of undifferentiated human febrile illness and infective endocarditis in cohort studies, but incidence estimates are lacking. C. burnetii presents a real yet underappreciated threat to human and animal health throughout Africa.&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt
