Investigation of the diffuse ultraviolet background with DE data
The imaging instrumentation on the Dynamics Explorer 1 satellite is used to measure the intensity of the diffused ultraviolet radiation on two great circles about the sky. It was found that the extragalactic component of the diffuse ultraviolet radiation has an intensity of 530 + or - 15 units (a unit is one photon/(sq cm s A sr) at a wavelength of 150 nm. The galactic component of the diffuse ultraviolet radiation has a dependence on galactic latitude which requires strongly forward scattering particles if it is produced by dust above the galactic plane
The structure of circumstellar shells
This document provides a report on research activities carried out with the support of NASA grant NAG 5-1174, the Structure of Circumstellar Shells, funded under the Astrophysics Data Program. The research carried out with the support of this grant is a study of the properties of circumstellar dust shells for which spectra are available through IRAS low resolution spectrometry (LRS). This research consisted of the development and application of models of axisymmetric circumstellar shells and a preliminary survey of the applicability of neural nets for analysis of the IRAS LRS spectra of circumstellar dust shells
Investigation of the diffuse ultraviolet background using satellite data: Dynamics explorer guest investigator program
The imaging instrumentation for the Dynamics Explorer Mission was designed primarily to obtain global auroral images. The instrument, however, was also used successfully to study marine bioluminescence, the geocorona, and the global distribution of atmospheric ozone. The imager has considerable potential for the study of astronomical sources of ultraviolet radiation as well. The data produced by the imager is used to study the brightness and isotrophy of the diffuse ultraviolet background
Photoproduction of the Hypertriton
In the framework of the impulse approximation we study the photoproduction of
the hypertriton H by using realistic He wave functions
obtained as solutions of Faddeev equations with the Reid soft-core potential
for different H wave functions. We obtain relatively small cross
sections of the order of 1 nb. We also find that the influence of Fermi motion
is important, while the effect of different off-shell assumptions on the cross

Recreation value of a new long-distance walking track
A large recreation value may be expected for a long-distance walking track which allows for hiking and camping in a tropical rainforest environment. When such a resource is new, sufficient data are not available for a primary study. A practical way to obtain a value estimate is by employing benefit transfer procedures. Using a travel cost analysis for the Thorsborne Trail as the transfer source, a consumer surplus estimate for the new Cannabullen Track was estimated at about Aus$300 per person per year. This value may contribute to management decisions about further development of facilities along the track and about user fees
Incoherent Photoproduction of -mesons from the Deuteron near Threshold
Incoherent photoproduction of the -meson on the deuteron is studied for
photon energies from threshold to 800 MeV. The dominant contribution, the
N-N amplitude, is described within an isobar model. The final
state interaction derived from the CD-Bonn potential is included and found to
be important for the description of the production cross section close to
threshold. Possible effects from the final state interaction are

Spin Asymmetry and Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn Sum Rule for the Deuteron
An explicit evaluation of the spin asymmetry of the deuteron and the
associated GDH sum rule is presented which includes photodisintegration, single
and double pion and eta production as well. Photodisintegration is treated with
a realistic retarded potential and a corresponding meson exchange current. For
single pion and eta production the elementary operator from MAID is employed
whereas for double pion production an effective Lagrangean approach is used. A
large cancellation between the disintegration and the meson production channels
yields for the explicit GDH integral a value of 27.31 b to be compared to
the sum rule value 0.65 b.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, revtex
Solar Flare Intermittency and the Earth's Temperature Anomalies
We argue that earth's short-term temperature anomalies and the solar flare
intermittency are linked. The analysis is based upon the study of the scaling
of both the spreading and the entropy of the diffusion generated by the
fluctuations of the temperature time series. The joint use of these two methods
evidences the presence of a L\'{e}vy component in the temporal persistence of
the temperature data sets that corresponds to the one that would be induced by
the solar flare intermittency. The mean monthly temperature datasets cover the
