    A brief overview on valorization of industrial tomato by-products using the biorefinery cascade approach

    The industrial processing of tomato leads to substantial amounts of residues, typically known as tomato pomace or by-products, which can represent as much as 10% by weight of fresh tomatoes. At present, these residues are either used as feedstock for animals or, in the worst case, disposed of in landfills. This represents a significant waste because tomato pomace contains high-value compounds like lycopene, a powerful antioxidant, cutin, which can be used as a starting material for biopolymers, and pectin, a gelling agent. This article presents an overview of technologies that valorize tomato by-products by recovering added-value compounds as well as generating fuel for energy production. These technologies include operations for extraction, separation, and exploitation of lycopene, cutin and pectin, as well as the processes for conversion of the solid residues to fuels. Data collected from the review has been used to develop a biorefinery scheme with the related mass flow balance, for a scenario involving the tomato supply chain of Regione Campania in Italy, using tomato by-products as feedstock

    The meeting and merging between innovative nanotechnological systems, such as nanoparticles, and the persistent need to outperform diagnostic-therapeutic approaches to fighting cancer are revolutionizing the medical research scenario, leading us into the world of nanomedicine. Photothermal therapy (PTT) is a non-invasive thermo-ablative treatment in which cellular hyperthermia is generated through the interaction of near-infrared light with light-to-heat converter entities, such as gold nanoparticles (GNPs). GNPs have great potential to improve recovery time, cure complexity, and time spent on the treatment of specific types of cancer. The development of gold nanostructures for photothermal efficacy and target selectivity ensures effective and deep tissue-penetrating PTT with fewer worries about adverse effects from nonspecific distributions. Regardless of the thriving research recorded in the last decade regarding the multiple biomedical applications of nanoparticles and, in particular, their conjugation with drugs, few works have been completed regarding the possibility of combining GNPs with the cancer-targeted pharmaceutical fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG).     El concepto de cultura desde la mirada antropológica : Experiencia de trabajo en un curso introductorio universitario

    El presente trabajo se enmarca en experiencias áulicas del Módulo de Antropología del Curso Introductorio de la Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Museo, UNLP, durante los años 2011 y 2012. El concepto antropológico de cultura constituye uno de los contenidos trabajados durante las clases. Se lo concibe como un eje vertebrador de la Antropología como disciplina científica. En este sentido, los objetivos del presente trabajo incluyen: 1) la discusión del abordaje particular dado a este concepto durante las clases y; 2) la reflexión acerca de los aportes, tanto de la inclusión del concepto de cultura como de una perspectiva antropológica a las prácticas interdisciplinarias. Utilizando al aula-taller como estrategia didáctica, durante las clases se tomaron como punto de partida los significados del sentido común del término "cultura", que los y las estudiantes manejan cotidianamente. Estos fueron contrastados con el significado disciplinar del término, destacándolo como una herramienta teórica clave para abordar el estudio del fenómeno humano. De esta manera se buscó generar una ruptura epistemológica con el sentido común del concepto de cultura, en pos de complejizar la mirada sobre el mundo social del cual formamos parte.     Isogeny-based cryptography is an active area of research in post-quantum public key cryptography. The problem of proving knowledge of an isogeny is a natural problem that has several applications in isogeny-based cryptography, such as allowing users to demonstrate that they are behaving honestly in a protocol. It is also related to isogeny-based digital signatures. Over the last few years, there have been a number of advances in this area, but there are still many open problems.     We show that the soundness proof for the De Feo-Jao-Plut identification scheme (the basis for supersingular isogeny Diffie--Hellman (SIDH) signatures) contains an invalid assumption, and we provide a counterexample for this assumption---thus showing the proof of soundness is invalid. As this proof was repeated in a number of works by various authors, multiple pieces of literature are affected by this result. Due to the importance of being able to prove knowledge of an SIDH key (for example, to prevent adaptive attacks), soundness is a vital property. Surprisingly, the problem of proving knowledge of a specific isogeny turns out to be considerably more difficult than was perhaps anticipated. The main results of this paper are a sigma protocol to prove knowledge of a walk of specified length in a supersingular isogeny graph, and a second one to additionally prove that the isogeny maps some torsion points to some other torsion points (as seen in SIDH public keys). Our scheme also avoids the SIDH identification scheme soundness issue raised by Ghantous, Pintore and Veroni. In particular, our protocol provides a non-interactive way of verifying correctness of SIDH public keys, and related statements, as protection against adaptive attacks. Post-scriptum: Some months after this work was completed and made public, the SIDH assumption was broken in a series of papers by several authors. Hence, in the standard SIDH setting, some of the statements studied here now have trivial polynomial time non-interactive proofs. Nevertheless our first sigma protocol is unaffected by the attacks, and our second protocol may still be useful in present and future variants of SIDH that escape the attacks

    A review of genetic epidemiology of head and neck cancer related to polymorphisms in metabolic genes, cell cycle control and alcohol metabolism

    The purpose of this report is to review the relationship between genetic polymorphisms involved in carcinogen metabolism, alcohol metabolism and cell-cycle control with the risk of head and neck cancer. The review was performed on available studies on genetic polymorphisms and head and neck cancer (HNC) published in PubMed up to September 2011. 246 primary articles and 7 meta-analyses were published. Among these, a statistically significant association was reported for glutathione S-transferases (GSTM1), glutathione S-transferases (GSTT1) and human microsomal epoxide hydrolase (EPHX1) genes. An increased risk for HNC was also associated reported for P53 codon 72 Pro/Pro, ALDH2 and three variants of the ADH gene: ADH1B (rs1229984), ADH7 (rs1573496) and ADH1C (rs698)

    Cardiac surgery practice during the COVID-19 outbreak: A regionwide survey

    Background: Health systems worldwide have been overburdened by the "COVID-19 surge". Consequently, strategies to remodulate non-COVID medical and surgical care had to be developed. Knowledge of the impact of COVID surge on cardiac surgery practice is mainstem. Present study aims to evaluate the regional practice pattern during lockdown in Campania. Methods: A multicenter regional observational 26-question survey was conducted, including all adult cardiac surgery units in Campania, Italy, to assess how surgical practice has changed during COVID-19 national lockdown. Results: All centers adopted specific protocols for screening patients and personnel. A significant reduction in the number of dedicated intensive care unit (ICU) beds (-30.0%±38.1%, range: 0-100%) and cardiac operating rooms (-22.2%±26.4%, range: 0-50%) along with personnel relocation to other departments was disclosed (anesthesiologists -5.8%±11.1%, range: 0-33.3%; perfusionists -5.6%±16.7%, range: 0-50%; nurses -4.8%±13.2%, range: 0-40%; cardiologists -3.2%±9.5%, range: 0-28.6%). Cardiac surgeons were never reallocated to other services. Globally, we witnessed dramatically lower adult cardiac surgery case volumes (335 vs. 667 procedures, P<0.001), as institutions and surgeons followed guidelines to curtail non-urgent operations. Conclusions: This regional survey demonstrates major changes in practice as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In this respect, this experience might lead to the development of permanent systems-based plans for future pandemic and may effectively help policy decision making when prioritizing healthcare resource reallocation during and after the pandemic

    Thalamic and Entorhinal Network Activity Differently Modulates the Functional Development of Prefrontal-Hippocampal Interactions.

    Precise information flow during mnemonic and executive tasks requires the coactivation of adult prefrontal and hippocampal networks in oscillatory rhythms. This interplay emerges early in life, most likely as an anticipatory template of later cognitive performance. At neonatal age, hippocampal theta bursts drive the generation of prefrontal theta-gamma oscillations. In the absence of direct reciprocal interactions, the question arises of which feedback mechanisms control the early entrainment of prefrontal-hippocampal networks. Here, we demonstrate that prefrontal-hippocampal activity couples with discontinuous theta oscillations and neuronal firing in both lateral entorhinal cortex and ventral midline thalamic nuclei of neonatal rats. However, these two brain areas have different contributions to the neonatal long-range communication. The entorhinal cortex mainly modulates the hippocampal activity via direct axonal projections. In contrast, thalamic theta bursts are controlled by the prefrontal cortex via mutual projections and contribute to hippocampal activity. Thus, the neonatal prefrontal cortex modulates the level of hippocampal activation by directed interactions with the ventral midline thalamus. Similar to the adult task-related communication, theta-band activity ensures the feedback control of long-range coupling in the developing brain.Significance statementMemories are encoded by finely tuned interactions within large-scale neuronal networks. This cognitive performance is not inherited, but progressively matures in relationship with the establishment of long-range coupling in the immature brain. The hippocampus initiates and unidirectionally drives the oscillatory entrainment of neonatal prefrontal cortex, yet feedback interactions that precisely control this early communication are still unresolved. Here, we identified distinct roles of entorhinal cortex and ventral midline thalamus for the functional development of prefrontal-hippocampal interactions. While entorhinal oscillations modulate the hippocampal activity by timing the neuronal firing via monosynaptic afferents, thalamic nuclei act as a relay station routing prefrontal activation back to hippocampus. Understanding the mechanisms of network maturation represents the prerequisite for assessing circuit dysfunction in neurodevelopmental disorders
