Water compatible resin for separation and recovery of dissolved precious metals
Trace Contaminants in Water: Genesis, Rapid Detection and Sustainable Removal Processes: abstract no. 353fOpen URL - http://apps.aiche.org/proceedings/Abstract.aspx?PaperID=119742The value of precious metals such as gold to be recovered in the industrial effluents within Pearl River Delta area is over HK$20 million per annual. Furthermore, with the expected tightening of environmental legislation and enforcement in the Mainland China, there is a growing need of effluent treatment technology. Traditionally, ion-exchange resin, polymer ultra-filtration and micro-emulsion are applied in the treatment of plating effluents. However, they all have different weaknesses. Many reports have been published for the separation using aqueous biphasic system. Based on this methodology, polystyrene-grafted-polyglycidol (PS-PG), a water-compatible polymer was synthesized. This type of polymer can be used for gold or silver extraction. After extraction, the recovery of metal can be achieved by direct electro-deposition or reverse extraction using sodium cyanide.postprintThe 2008 AIChE Annual Meeting (AIChE 100), Philadelphia, PA., 16-21 November 2008. An innovation approach on the separation of metal
There has been increasing environmental concerns on the metallic pollution in recent decades. The conventional technologies used for metal extraction are ion-exchange resins, polymer ultrafiltration and microemulsion. The whole extraction mechanism can be divided into 4 steps: 1) The binding of dissolved metal to active sites, 2) Separation of the metal load extractant from the lean phase, 3) Reverse extraction of loaded metal for recovery 4) Recycling of extractant for repeated extraction. Each of the conventional methods suffers different drawbacks in different steps of the extraction mechanism….postprintThe 2008 AIChE Annual Meeting (AIChE 100), Philadelphia, PA., 16-21 November 2008. Structural response of concrete-filled elliptical steel hollow sections under eccentric compression
The purpose of this research is to examine the behaviour of elliptical concrete-filled steel tubular stub columns under a combination of axial force and bending moment. Most of the research carried out to date involving concrete-filled steel sections has focussed on circular and rectangular tubes, with each shape exhibiting distinct behaviour. The degree of concrete confinement provided by the hollow section wall has been studied under pure compression but remains ambiguous for combined compressive and bending loads, with no current design provision for this loading combination. To explore the structural behaviour, laboratory tests were carried out using eight stub columns of two different tube wall thicknesses and applying axial compression under various eccentricities. Moment-rotation relationships were produced for each specimen to establish the influence of cross-section dimension and axis of bending on overall response. Full 3D finite element models were developed, comparing the effect of different material constitutive models, until good agreement was found. Finally, analytical interaction curves were generated assuming plastic behaviour and compared with the experimental and finite element results. Ground work provided from these tests paves the way for the development of future design guidelines on the member level
ANTICIPATION EFFECT ON KNEE JOINT STABILITY DURING PLANNED AND UN-PLANNED MOVEMENT TESTS IN LABORATORY
The purpose of this study was to investigate the anticipation effect on knee stability during functional test in laboratory. Ten healthy male subjects were recruited and instructed to perform a series of planned and un-planned stop-jumping tasks. Knee joint kinematics was measured by a motion analysis system. The subjects demonstrated different abduction and rotation angles for reactive tasks. This suggested that if knee abduction or rotational stability is considered as a primary measurement in documenting knee stability, such as in the investigation of rehabilitation progress after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, both planned and un-planned tasks should be considered as to take the anticipation effect into account

Smoking family, paternal smoking at home and saliva cotinine levels of young children in Hong Kong
Conference Theme: Tobacco and Non-Communicable DiseasesPoster Discussion 25. Smoke-Free Environments and Second-Hand Smoke: Changing the Norm: no. PD-890-20BACKGROUND: Prevalence of smoking in Hong Kong (all 10.7%, male 19.1%, female 3.1%) is among the lowest in the world. Home is a main source of children’s secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure in densely populated Hong Kong. We investigated paternal smoking places at home and distance from children with children’s cotinine levels. DESIGN/METHODS: 773 children (response rate 66.0%, mean age 6.2±5.6, 51.6% boys) were recruited in 4 Maternal and Children Health Centers in Hong Kong. Information on SHS exposure at and outside home, paternal smoking behaviours, socio-demographic characteristics was reported …published_or_final_versio
Development of a Chinese version of the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (CHI-VFQ-25) as a tool to study patients with eye diseases in Hong Kong
Background: To develop a Chinese version of the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (CHI-VFQ-25) and to test its reliability and validity in a group of patients with eye diseases in Hong Kong. Methods: The National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ) was translated into Chinese. Patients were recruited from Hong Kong, and their demographic data and visual acuity were documented. Psychometric properties of the CHI-VFQ-25, including internal consistency, test-retest reliability, item-scale correlations and construct validity were tested. Results: 250 patients were recruited. The mean age of the patients was 66.04 (SD 14.00). 46% of them were male. The non-response rate and the floor and ceiling numbers of the CHI-VFQ-25 were calculated. The internal consistency was high in most subscales (except the general health and driving subscales), with Cronbach α ranging from 0.72-0.90. The test-retest reliability was excellent (intraclass correlation coefficient >0.90). Patients with worse visual acuity had significantly lower scores on the CHI-VFQ-25 supporting construct validity. Conclusion: The CHI-VFQ-25 is a reliable and valid tool for assessing the visual functions of Chinese patients with eye diseases in Hong Kong. Some questions had high non-response rates and should be substituted by the available alternatives.published_or_final_versio
Predictors of intention to quit at participation and six-month abstinence in the participants of Hong Kong Quit-to-Win Contest (2009-2013)
Poster Discussion 23. Cessation - Predictors and Policies: no. PD-864-20Conference Theme: Tobacco and Non-Communicable DiseasesBACKGROUND: Quit and Win Contests were organized in many countries to attract a large number of smokers, who mostly had not sought professional cessation support, to quit with the grand monetary prize as an incentive. The present study aims to explore the influential factors of being ready to quit (want to quit within 7 days) and abstinence in these participants. DESIGN/METHODS: The 4 rounds of Quit-to-Win Contests (2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013) recruited 4,093 adult daily …published_or_final_versio
