Faster, Smaller, Cheaper: An Hedonic Price Analysis of PDAs
We compute quality-adjusted price indexes for Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) for the period 1999-2004, using data on prices and characteristics of 203 models sold by 12 manufacturers. The PDA market is growing in size, it is technologically dynamic with very substantial changes in measured characteristics over time, and it has experienced rapid rates of product introduction. Hedonic regressions consistently show prices to be positively related to processor performance, RAM memory, permanent storage capacity, and battery life, as well as several measures of screen size and quality. Features such as networking, biometric identification, camera, and cellphone capability are also positively associated with price. Hedonic price indexes implied by these regressions decline at an AAGR of 21.1% to 25.6% per year during this period. A matched model price index computed from a subset of observations declines at 18.75% per year. Though these PDA rates of price decline are lower than have been estimated for desktop and laptop PCs, consumers in this "ultra-portable" segment of the computer market appear to have enjoyed substantial welfare gains over the past five years.
Scanning tunneling microscopy and kinetic Monte Carlo investigation of Cesium superlattices on Ag(111)
Cesium adsorption structures on Ag(111) were characterized in a
low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy experiment. At low coverages,
atomic resolution of individual Cs atoms is occasionally suppressed in regions
of an otherwise hexagonally ordered adsorbate film on terraces. Close to step
edges Cs atoms appear as elongated protrusions along the step edge direction.
At higher coverages, Cs superstructures with atomically resolved hexagonal
lattices are observed. Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations model the observed
adsorbate structures on a qualitative level.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure
Generation of three-dimensional prototype models based on cone beam computed tomography
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to generate three-dimensional models based on digital volumetric data that can be used in basic and advanced education. Methods: Four sets of digital volumetric data were established by cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) (Accuitomo, J. Morita, Kyoto, Japan). Datasets were exported as Dicom formats and imported into Mimics and Magic software programs to separate the different tissues such as nerve, tooth and bone. These data were transferred to a Polyjet 3D Printing machine (Eden 330, Object, Israel) to generate the models. Results: Three-dimensional prototype models of certain limited anatomical structures as acquired volumetrically were fabricated. Conclusions: Generating three-dimensional models based on CBCT datasets is possible. Automated routine fabrication of these models, with the given infrastructure, is too time-consuming and therefore too expensiv
Results from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider
We describe the current status of the heavy ion research program at the
Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The new suite of experiments and the
collider energies have opened up new probes of the medium created in the
collisions. Our review focuses on the experimental discoveries to date at RHIC
and their interpretation in the light of our present theoretical understanding
of the dynamics of relativistic heavy ion collisions and of the structure of

New limits on "odderon" amplitudes from analyticity constraints
In studies of high energy and scattering, the odd (under
crossing) forward scattering amplitude accounts for the difference between the
and cross sections. Typically, it is taken as

ratio of the real to the imaginary portion of the forward scattering amplitude.
However, the odd-signatured amplitude can have in principle a strikingly
different behavior, ranging from having non-zero constant to
having as , the maximal behavior
allowed by analyticity and the Froissart bound. We reanalyze high energy
and scattering data, using new analyticity constraints, in order to

SIC-POVMs and the Extended Clifford Group
We describe the structure of the extended Clifford Group (defined to be the
group consisting of all operators, unitary and anti-unitary, which normalize
the generalized Pauli group (or Weyl-Heisenberg group as it is often called)).
We also obtain a number of results concerning the structure of the Clifford
Group proper (i.e. the group consisting just of the unitary operators which
normalize the generalized Pauli group). We then investigate the action of the
extended Clifford group operators on symmetric informationally complete POVMs
(or SIC-POVMs) covariant relative to the action of the generalized Pauli group.
We show that each of the fiducial vectors which has been constructed so far
(including all the vectors constructed numerically by Renes et al) is an
eigenvector of one of a special class of order 3 Clifford unitaries. This
suggests a strengthening of a conjuecture of Zauner's. We give a complete
characterization of the orbits and stability groups in dimensions 2-7. Finally,
we show that the problem of constructing fiducial vectors may be expected to
simplify in the infinite sequence of dimensions 7, 13, 19, 21, 31,... . We
illustrate this point by constructing exact expressions for fiducial vectors in

Has The Era Of Slow Growth For Prescription Drug Spending Ended?
In the period 2005–13 the US prescription drug market grew at an average annual pace of only 1.8 percent in real terms on an invoice price basis (that is, in constant dollars and before manufacturers’ rebates and discounts). But the growth rate increased dramatically in 2014, when the market expanded by 11.5 percent—which raised questions about future trends. We determined the impact of manufacturers’ rebates and discounts on prices and identified the underlying factors likely to influence prescription spending over the next decade. These include a strengthening of the innovation pipeline; consolidation among buyers such as wholesalers, pharmacy benefit managers, and health insurers; and reduced incidence of patent expirations, which means that fewer less costly generic drug substitutes will enter the market than in the recent past. While various forecasts indicate that pharmaceutical spending growth will moderate from its 2014 level, the business tension between buyers and sellers could play out in many different ways. Technical Change, Investment and Energy Intensity
Abstract in HTML and technical report in PDF available on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change website (http://mit.edu/globalchange/www/).This paper analyzes the role of different components of technical change on energy intensity by applying a Translog variable cost function setting to the new EU KLEMS dataset for 3 selected EU countries (Italy, Finland and Spain). The framework applied represents an accounting of technical change components, comprising autonomous as well as embodied and induced technical change. The inducement of embodied technical change is introduced by an equation for the physical capital stock that is a fixed factor in the short-run. The dataset on capital services and user costs of capital in EUKLEMS enables explaining capital accumulation depending on factor prices. Observations of red-giant variable stars by Aboriginal Australians
Aboriginal Australians carefully observe the properties and positions of
stars, including both overt and subtle changes in their brightness, for
subsistence and social application. These observations are encoded in oral
tradition. I examine two Aboriginal oral traditions from South Australia that
describe the periodic changing brightness in three pulsating, red-giant
variable stars: Betelgeuse (Alpha Orionis), Aldebaran (Alpha Tauri), and
Antares (Alpha Scorpii). The Australian Aboriginal accounts stand as the only
known descriptions of pulsating variable stars in any Indigenous oral tradition
in the world. Researchers examining these oral traditions over the last
century, including anthropologists and astronomers, missed the description of
these stars as being variable in nature as the ethnographic record contained
several misidentifications of stars and celestial objects. Arguably,
ethnographers working on Indigenous Knowledge Systems should have academic
