WIMPs search by scintillators: possible strategy for annual modulation search with large-mass highly-radiopure NaI(Tl)
The DAMA experiments are running deep underground in the Gran Sasso National
Laboratory. Several interesting results have been achieved so far. Here a
maximum likelihood method to search for the WIMP annual modulation signature is
discussed and applied to a set of preliminary test data collected with large
mass highly radiopure NaI(Tl) detectors. Various related technical arguments

Heterogeneous Dynamics in Columnar Liquid Crystals of Parallel Hard Rods
In the wake of previous studies on the rattling-and-jumping diffusion in
smectic liquid crystal phases of colloidal rods, we analyze here for the first
time the heterogeneous dynamics in columnar phases. More specifically, we
perform computer simulations to investigate the relaxation dynamics of a binary
mixture of perfectly aligned hard spherocylinders. We detect that the columnar
arrangement of the system produces free-energy barriers the particles should
overcome to jump from one column to another, thus determining a hopping-type
diffusion. This phenomenon accounts for the non-Gaussian inter-column diffusion
and shows a two-step structural relaxation which is remarkably analogous to
that of out-of-equilibrium glass-forming systems and gels. Surprisingly enough,
slight deviations from the behavior of simple liquids due to transient cages is
also observed in the direction perpendicular to this plane, where the system is

Recovering Metallicity in A4C60: The Case of Monomeric Li4C60
The restoration of metallicity in the high-temperature, cubic phase of Li4C60
represents a remarkable feature for a member of the A4C60 family (A = alkali
metal), invariably found to be insulators. Structural and resonance technique
investigations on Li4C60 at T > 600 K, show that its fcc structure is
associated with a complete (4e) charge transfer to C60 and a sparsely populated
Fermi level. These findings not only emphasize the crucial role played by
lattice symmetry in fulleride transport properties, but also re-dimension the
role of Jahn-Teller effects in band structure determination. Moreover, they
suggest the present system as a potential precursor to a new class of

Unusual polymerization in the Li4C60 fulleride
Li4C60, one of the best representatives of lithium intercalated fullerides,
features a novel type of 2D polymerization. Extensive investigations, including
laboratory x-ray and synchrotron radiation diffraction, 13C NMR, MAS and Raman
spectroscopy, show a monoclinic I2/m structure, characterized by chains of
[2+2]-cycloaddicted fullerenes, sideways connected by single C-C bonds. This
leads to the formation of polymeric layers, whose insulating nature, deduced
from the NMR and Raman spectra, denotes the complete localization of the

Optimization and Portability of a Fusion OpenACC-based FORTRAN HPC Code from NVIDIA to AMD GPUs
NVIDIA has been the main provider of GPU hardware in HPC systems for over a
decade. Most applications that benefit from GPUs have thus been developed and
optimized for the NVIDIA software stack. Recent exascale HPC systems are,
however, introducing GPUs from other vendors, e.g. with the AMD GPU-based OLCF
Frontier system just becoming available. AMD GPUs cannot be directly accessed
using the NVIDIA software stack, and require a porting effort by the
application developers. This paper provides an overview of our experience
porting and optimizing the CGYRO code, a widely-used fusion simulation tool
based on FORTRAN with OpenACC-based GPU acceleration. While the porting from
the NVIDIA compilers was relatively straightforward using the CRAY compilers on
the AMD systems, the performance optimization required more fine-tuning. In the
optimization effort, we uncovered code sections that had performed well on
NVIDIA GPUs, but were unexpectedly slow on AMD GPUs. After AMD-targeted code
optimizations, performance on AMD GPUs has increased to meet our expectations.
Modest speed improvements were also seen on NVIDIA GPUs, which was an

Final results of an experiment to search for 2beta processes in zinc and tungsten with the help of radiopure ZnWO4 crystal scintillators
A search for the double beta decay of zinc and tungsten isotopes has been
performed with the help of radiopure ZnWO4 crystal scintillators (0.1-0.7 kg)
at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories of the INFN. The total exposure of the
low background measurements is 0.529 kg yr. New improved half-life limits on
the double beta decay modes of 64Zn, 70Zn, 180W, and 186W have been established
at the level of 10^{18}-10^{21} yr. In particular, limits on double electron
capture and electron capture with positron emission in 64Zn have been set:
T_{1/2}(2\nu 2K) > 1.1 10^{19} yr, T_{1/2} (0\nu 2\epsilon) > 3.2 10^{20} yr,
T_{1/2} (2\nu \epsilon \beta^+) > 9.4 10^{20} yr, and T_{1/2} (0\nu \epsilon
\beta^+) > 8.5 10^{20} yr, all at 90% C.L. Resonant neutrinoless double
electron capture in 180W has been restricted on the level of T_{1/2} (0\nu
2\epsilon) > 1.3 10^{18} yr. A new half-life limit on alpha transition of 183W
to the metastable excited level 1/2^- 375 keV of 179Hf has been established:
