Catalyzed Gasoline Particulate Filters Reduce Secondary Organic Aerosol Production from Gasoline Direct Injection Vehicles
The
effects of photochemical aging on exhaust emissions from two
light-duty vehicles with gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines equipped
with and without catalyzed gasoline particle filters (GPFs) were investigated
using a mobile environmental chamber. Both vehicles with and without
the GPFs were exercised over the LA92 drive cycle using a chassis
dynamometer. Diluted exhaust emissions from the entire LA92 cycle
were introduced to the mobile chamber and subsequently photochemically
reacted. It was found that the addition of catalyzed GPFs will significantly
reduce tailpipe particulate emissions and also provide benefits in
gaseous emissions, including nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHC). Tailpipe
emissions composition showed important changes with the use of GPFs
by practically eliminating black carbon and increasing the fractional
contribution of organic mass. Production of secondary organic aerosol
(SOA) was reduced with GPF addition, but was also dependent on engine
design which determined the amount of SOA precursors at the tailpipe.
Our findings indicate that SOA production from GDI vehicles will be
reduced with the application of catalyzed GPFs through the mitigation
of reactive hydrocarbon precursors
The ALMaQUEST survey – III. Scatter in the resolved star-forming main sequence is primarily due to variations in star formation efficiency
Using a sample of 11,478 spaxels in 34 galaxies with molecular gas, star formation and stellar maps taken from the ALMA-MaNGA QUEnching and STar formation (ALMaQUEST) survey, we investigate the parameters that correlate with variations in star formation rates on kpc scales. We use a combination of correlation statistics and an artificial neural network to quantify the parameters that drive both the absolute star formation rate surface density (Sigma_SFR), as well as its scatter around the resolved star forming main sequence (Delta Sigma_SFR). We find that Sigma_SFR is primarily regulated by molecular gas surface density (Sigma_H2) with a secondary dependence on stellar mass surface density (Sigma_*), as expected from an `extended Kennicutt-Schmidt relation'. However, Delta Sigma_SFR is driven primarily by changes in star formation efficiency (SFE), with variations in gas fraction playing a secondary role. Taken together, our results demonstrate that whilst the absolute rate of star formation is primarily set by the amount of molecular gas, the variation of star formation rate above and below the resolved star forming main sequence (on kpc scales) is primarily due to changes in SFE
Amino acid composition predicts prion activity
Many prion-forming proteins contain glutamine/asparagine (Q/N) rich domains, and there are conflicting opinions as to the role of primary sequence in their conversion to the prion form: is this phenomenon driven primarily by amino acid composition, or, as a recent computational analysis suggested, dependent on the presence of short sequence elements with high amyloid-forming potential. The argument for the importance of short sequence elements hinged on the relatively-high accuracy obtained using a method that utilizes a collection of length-six sequence elements with known amyloid-forming potential. We weigh in on this question and demonstrate that when those sequence elements are permuted, even higher accuracy is obtained; we also propose a novel multiple-instance machine learning method that uses sequence composition alone, and achieves better accuracy than all existing prion prediction approaches. While we expect there to be elements of primary sequence that affect the process, our experiments suggest that sequence composition alone is sufficient for predicting protein sequences that are likely to form prions. A web-server for the proposed method is available at http://faculty.pieas.edu.pk/fayyaz/prank.html, and the code for reproducing our experiments is available at http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.167136
