Children's interactions with interactive toy technology
Abstract Digital toys offer the opportunity to explore software scaffolding through tangible interfaces that are not bound to the desktop computer. This paper describes the empirical work completed by the CACHET (Computers and Children's Electronic Toys) project team investigating young children's use of interactive toy technology. The interactive toys in question are plush and cuddly cartoon characters with embedded sensors that can be squeezed to evoke spoken feedback from the toy. In addition to playing with the toy as it stands, the toy can be linked to a desktop PC with compatible software using a wireless radio connection. Once this connection is made the toy offers hints and tips to the children as they play with the accompanying software games. If the toy is absent, the same hints and tips are available through an on-screen animated icon of the toy's cartoon character. The toys as they stand are not impressive as collaborative learning partners, as their help repertoire is inadequate and even inappropriate. However, the technology has potential: children can master the multiple interfaces of toy and screen and, when the task requires it and the help provided is appropriate, they will both seek and use it. In particular, the cuddly interface experience can offer an advantage and the potential for fun interfaces that might address both the affective and the effective dimensions of learners' interactions
The politics of tourism development: a case of dual governance in Tobago
The purpose of this paper is to report on an exploratory study of the role that tourism policy plays in influencing tourism development. The research is based on two questions: How does tourism policy influence tourism development in the small twin-island state of Trinidad and Tobago? and How does an arrangement of dual governance in a small twin-island state promote tourism development? The exploration demonstrates that tourism development in the context of Tobago, the smaller of the two islands, has been slowed as a result of dual governance and hence dual policy arrangements
Complexity theory and tourism policy research
This paper investigates applications of complexity theory in the social sphere and considers its potential contribution to enhance understanding of tourism policy making. Five concepts are identified to explore complex social circumstances and human interactions that influence policy. Social applications of complexity suggest a move towards localised and deeper studies to explore the dynamics of policy enactment in context. It suggests complexity theory might be used as a thinking tool to enable a more holistic approach to policy analysis and investigate policy in its context, considering interactions between different policies/programmes, and the implications of human agency
Influence of aggregate absorption and diffusion properties on moisture damage in asphalt mixtures
An experimental study was undertaken to characterise moisture sensitivity of asphalt mixtures by comparing certain physico-chemical properties of selected aggregates of different mineralogies to the moisture induced strength degradation of the aggregate–mastic bonds. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of using different aggregate types (as substrates) with a single mastic type that had shown severe moisture sensitivity in the past when combined with a susceptible aggregate substrate. Four different aggregate types and an asphalt mastic (made with a 40/60 pen base bitumen) were used. Aggregate moisture sorption at ambient temperature was characterised using gravimetric techniques. Aggregate specific surface area was determined by octane adsorption using a dynamic vapour sorption device. Dynamic mechanical analysis techniques based on data from a dynamic shear rheometer were used to characterise the rheological properties of the asphalt mastic. Aggregate–mastic bond strength as a function of moisture conditioning time was determined using a tensile pull-off test set-up. The results were used to estimate equilibrium moisture uptake, diffusion coefficient, characteristic diffusion time, and aggregate ‘porosity’. The effect of moisture on bond strength was aggregate substrate-type-dependent with three out of the four aggregates performing well and the fourth performing poorly. The moisture absorption and diffusion properties of the poorly performing aggregates were worse than the ‘good’ performing aggregates. Susceptible aggregate–mastic bonds had high porosity, high moisture absorption, high diffusion coefficient and contained granite as substrates. Results of statistical analyses suggested that the differences in moisture sensitivity of the other three aggregates were not significant. Therefore, two unique damage models, one for ‘good’ performing and another for ‘poor’ performing were proposed to characterise moisture damage sensitivity of asphalt. The influence of aggregate moisture absorption and diffusion on asphalt mixture moisture damage was found to be aggregate-type-dependent. The results also suggested that in a susceptible mixture, the effect of the substrate aggregate may be more influential than the effect of mastic. The results have important implications for the selection of coarse aggregate for asphalt mix design
Rubberised bitumen manufacturing assisted by rheological measurements
This paper investigates the effect of processing temperature and time on the rheological properties of recycled tyre rubber-modified bitumens (RTR-MBs) produced using two different base binders and an ambient ground crumb rubber modifier (CRM). The production of the RTR-MBs was accomplished by means of a standard Brookfield rotational viscometer together with a modified impeller, dual helical impeller, to allow mixing as well as real-time viscosity measurements of the produced RTR-MBs. The rheological properties of the final RTR-MBs were determined by means of standard dynamic mechanical analysis oscillatory and multiple stress creep recovery testing using a dynamic shear rheometer. The results indicate that the low processing conditions (160°C and 60 min) are not appropriate for developing RTR-MBs with enhanced physical and rheological properties. However, allowing the crumb rubber to interact with the base binder for longer mixing times (140 min) led to the development of an enhanced rubber (polymer) network structure within the blend (i.e. swelling of the CRM particles) and superior rheological properties. At the other extreme, using high-processing conditions (200°C and 140 min) led to RTR-MBs in which the rubber network had been subjected to devulcanisation and depolymerisation with a subsequent reduction in modification
Submarine landslides on the upper southeast Australian passive continental margin – preliminary findings
The southeast Australian passive continental margin is narrow, steep and sediment-deficient, and characterized by relatively low rates of modern sedimentation. Upper slope (\u3c1200m) sediments comprise mixtures of calcareous and terrigenous sand and mud. Three of twelve sediment cores recovered from geologically-recent, submarine landslides located offshore New South Wales/Queensland (NSW/QLD) are interpreted to have sampled failure surfaces at depths of between 85 cm and 220 cm below the present-day seabed. Differences in sediment physical properties are recorded above and below the three slide-plane boundaries. Sediment taken directly above the inferred submarine landslide failure surfaces and presumed to be post-landslide, returned radiocarbon ages of 15.8 ka, 20.7 ka and 20.1 ka. The last two ages correspond to adjacent slide features, which are inferred to be consistent with their being triggered by a single event such as an earthquake. Slope stability models based on classical soil mechanics and measured sediment shearstrengths indicate that the upper slope sediments should be stable. However, multibeam sonar data reveal that many upper slope landslides occur across the margin and that submarine landsliding is a common process. We infer from these results that: a) an unidentified mechanism regularly acts to reduce the shear resistance of these sediments to the very low values required to enable slope failure, and/or b) the margin experiences seismic events that act to destabilise the slope sediments
Influence of the single-particle Zeeman energy on the quantum Hall ferromagnet at high filling factors
In a recent paper [B. A. Piot et al., Phys. Rev. B 72, 245325 (2005)], we
have shown that the lifting of the electron spin degeneracy in the integer
quantum Hall effect at high filling factors should be interpreted as a
magnetic-field-induced Stoner transition. In this work, we extend the analysis
to investigate the influence of the single-particle Zeeman energy on the
quantum Hall ferromagnet at high filling factors. The single-particle Zeeman
energy is tuned through the application of an additional in-plane magnetic
field. Both the evolution of the spin polarization of the system and the
critical magnetic field for spin splitting are well described as a function of
the tilt angle of the sample in the magnetic field.Comment: Published in Phys. Rev.
Classical percolation fingerprints in the high-temperature regime of the integer quantum Hall effect
We have performed magnetotransport experiments in the high-temperature regime
(up to 50 K) of the integer quantum Hall effect for two-dimensional electron
gases in semiconducting heterostructures. While the magnetic field dependence
of the classical Hall law presents no anomaly at high temperatures, we find a
breakdown of the Drude-Lorentz law for the longitudinal conductance beyond a
crossover magnetic field B_c ~ 1 T, which turns out to be correlated with the
onset of the integer quantum Hall effect at low temperatures. We show that the
high magnetic field regime at B > B_c can be understood in terms of classical
percolative transport in a smooth disordered potential. From the temperature
dependence of the peak longitudinal conductance, we extract scaling exponents
which are in good agreement with the theoretically expected values. We also
prove that inelastic scattering on phonons is responsible for dissipation in a
wide temperature range going from 1 to 50 K at high magnetic fields.Comment: 14 pages + 8 Figure
Reclaimed asphalt test specimen preparation assisted by image analysis
This paper presents a laboratory investigation aimed at establishing a protocol for the production of homogeneous asphalt mixtures test specimens, incorporating reclaimed asphalt by using a gyratory compactor with coring and trimming works. Stone mastic asphalt specimens were compacted at the previously identified target densities with the final aim of obtaining specimens with a fixed and homogeneous air void distribution. A microstructural study was conducted to characterize the homogeneity in the air void distribution using X-ray computed tomography (CT) combined with image analysis techniques. The study concluded that the gyratory compactor is suitable for producing homogeneous test specimens for the specified mixtures and a set of detailed procedures has been proposed for the production of the compacted specimens and to perform the microstructural study
Laboratory mix design of asphalt mixture containing reclaimed material
This paper presents a study on the production of asphalt test specimens in the laboratory containing reclaimed asphalt. The mixtures considered were stone mastic asphalt concrete mixtures containing up to 30% of reclaimed asphalt. Specimens were compacted to the reference density obtained from the Marshall mix design. Gyration compaction method was used for preparing specimens for the experimental programme, while coring and cutting methods and X-ray computed tomography (CT) were used to investigate the change in properties within the specimens and to validate the selected methodology.The study concluded that gyratory compaction is suitable to produce homogeneous test specimens also for mixtures containing high amount of reclaimed asphalt. Nevertheless, preliminary trials for each material are mandatory, as well as final coring and trimming of the specimens due to side effects
