Matching small functions using centroid jitter and two beam position monitors
Matching to small beta functions is required to preserve emittance in plasma
accelerators. The plasma wake provides strong focusing fields, which typically
require beta functions on the mm-scale, comparable to those found in the final
focusing of a linear collider. Such beams can be time consuming to
experimentally produce and diagnose. We present a simple, fast, and noninvasive
method to measure Twiss parameters in a linac using two beam position monitors
only, relying on the similarity of the beam phase space and the jitter phase
space. By benchmarking against conventional quadrupole scans, the viability of
this technique was experimentally demonstrated at the FLASHForward

The restoration of Loch Leven, Scotland, UK
This paper reviews the progress made towards the restoration of Loch Leven, the largest lake in lowland Scotland, over the last 20 years. In particular, the importance of direct regulation and of setting water quality objectives and targets is examined. Various means of engaging with stakeholders and the general public are also considered. Success criteria and catchment management initiatives are described and briefly reviewed
Does metformin improve vascular health in children with Type 1 diabetes? Protocol for a one year, double blind, randomised, placebo controlled trial
Background: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality in Type 1 diabetes (T1D). Vascular dysfunction is an early and critical event in the development of cardiovascular disease. Children with T1D have vascular dysfunction therefore early interventions to improve vascular health are essential to reduce cardiovascular mortality in T1D. Metformin is an insulin sensitising agent which is known to improve vascular health outcomes in type 2 diabetes (T2D) and other individuals with insulin resistance. It has been used safely in children and adolescents with T2D for over 10 years. This study aims to assess the effect of metformin on vascular health in children with T1D. Methods/Design: This study is a 12 month, double blind, randomised, placebo controlled trial to determine the effect of metformin on vascular health in children (age 8–18) with T1D. The sample size is 76 with 38 children in the metformin group and 38 children in the placebo group. Vascular health and biochemical markers will be measured at baseline, 3, 6 and 12 months. Vascular function will be measured using flow mediated dilatation and glyceryl trinitrate mediated dilatation of the brachial artery and vascular structure will be measured with carotid and aortic intima media thickness, using standardised protocols. Discussion: This study will be the first to investigate the effect of metformin on vascular health in children with T1D. Arnol'd Tongues and Quantum Accelerator Modes
The stable periodic orbits of an area-preserving map on the 2-torus, which is
formally a variant of the Standard Map, have been shown to explain the quantum
accelerator modes that were discovered in experiments with laser-cooled atoms.
We show that their parametric dependence exhibits Arnol'd-like tongues and
perform a perturbative analysis of such structures. We thus explain the
arithmetical organisation of the accelerator modes and discuss experimental

Morphological Instabilities in a growing Yeast Colony: Experiment and Theory
We study the growth of colonies of the yeast Pichia membranaefaciens on
agarose film. The growth conditions are controlled in a setup where nutrients
are supplied through an agarose film suspended over a solution of nutrients. As
the thickness of the agarose film is varied, the morphology of the front of the
colony changes. The growth of the front is modeled by coupling it to a
diffusive field of inhibitory metabolites. Qualitative agreement with
experiments suggests that such a coupling is responsible for the observed

Spiral cracks in drying precipitates
We investigate the formation of spiral crack patterns during the desiccation
of thin layers of precipitates in contact with a substrate. This
symmetry-breaking fracturing mode is found to arise naturally not from torsion
forces, but from a propagating stress front induced by the fold-up of the
fragments. We model their formation mechanism using a coarse-grain model for
fragmentation and successfully reproduce the spiral cracks. Fittings of
experimental and simulation data show that the spirals are logarithmic,
corresponding to constant deviation from a circular crack path. Theoretical
aspects of the logarithmic spirals are discussed. In particular we show that
this occurs generally when the crack speed is proportional to the propagating

The Work of the Course: validity and reliability in assessing English Literature
© 2017 National Association for the Teaching of English This article reflects on the values and practices of a revolutionary UK A level (senior secondary) course that achieved a high degree of validity and reliability in assessing the study of English literature. John Hodgson and Bill Greenwell were involved in its teaching and assessment from an early stage, and Greenwell's comments on an early draft of the article have been incorporated. The practice of literary response enshrined in the course was based on a striking application of “personal response” to literature, gave students opportunities to show capability in studying and writing a range of literary styles and genres, and engaged teachers regionally and nationally in a developed professional community of practice. It remains a touchstone of quality as well as of innovation in English curriculum and assessment
