    Interests Diffusion in Social Networks

    Understanding cultural phenomena on Social Networks (SNs) and exploiting the implicit knowledge about their members is attracting the interest of different research communities both from the academic and the business side. The community of complexity science is devoting significant efforts to define laws, models, and theories, which, based on acquired knowledge, are able to predict future observations (e.g. success of a product). In the mean time, the semantic web community aims at engineering a new generation of advanced services by defining constructs, models and methods, adding a semantic layer to SNs. In this context, a leapfrog is expected to come from a hybrid approach merging the disciplines above. Along this line, this work focuses on the propagation of individual interests in social networks. The proposed framework consists of the following main components: a method to gather information about the members of the social networks; methods to perform some semantic analysis of the Domain of Interest; a procedure to infer members' interests; and an interests evolution theory to predict how the interests propagate in the network. As a result, one achieves an analytic tool to measure individual features, such as members' susceptibilities and authorities. Although the approach applies to any type of social network, here it is has been tested against the computer science research community. The DBLP (Digital Bibliography and Library Project) database has been elected as test-case since it provides the most comprehensive list of scientific production in this field.Comment: 30 pages 13 figs 4 table

    Basili Castle: the digital Atlas of Castles in Basilicata (Southern Italy)

    The Institute for Archaeological and Monumental Heritage of the National Research Council, in cooperation with the Italian Institute of Castles - section of Basilicata, has designed and developed the digital Atlas of Castles of Basilicata. This Atlas, named BasiliCastle, aims at being a concrete contribution to the knowledge, fruition and promotion of the fortified architectural heritage of Basilicata. It includes a WebGIS and an App. The WebGIS is based on free geographical data and it is shared and supported by OpenStreetMap platform. The App provides users with a detailed geographical data, the historical and architectural description, pictures and 3D models of the castles. BasiliCastle has been developed using an Open Source environment and allows to share all the data which are fully available to users

    A minute focus of extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma arising in Hashimoto thyroiditis diagnosed with PCR after laser capture microdissection: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Primary thyroid gland lymphomas are uncommon tumours that occur in the setting of lymphocytic thyroiditis or Hashimoto's disease in almost all cases. In this condition a distinction between an inflammatory lymphoid infiltrate and a low grade lymphoma may be extremely difficult and precise criteria are necessary for a correct diagnosis.</p> <p>Patient and methods</p> <p>We report a case of a minute focus of primary extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (EMZBCL), incidentally discovered in a 63-year-old man with Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) and diagnosed by means of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) after laser capture microdissection.</p> <p>The histological examination of surgical specimen confirmed the diagnosis of HT and showed a minute focus of dense lymphoid infiltrate (less than 4 mm in diameter), composed by centrocyte-like cells forming MALT balls. Immunoistochemistry was not useful. A microscopic focus of EMZBCL was suspected on the basis of morphological features. PCR assays revealed the rearrangement of the heavy chain of immunoglobulins only in the microdissected suspicious area, confirming the diagnosis of EMZBCL.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our finding suggests that in cases of autoimmune thyroiditis a careful examination of the thyroid specimen is warranted, in order to disclose areas or small foci of lymphomatous transformation. Furthermore, in difficult cases with doubtful immunohistological findings, ancillary techniques, such as molecular studies, are necessary for a conclusive diagnosis.</p

    A rare case of endometriosis in Turner's syndrome

    Endometriosis is defined by the presence of functional endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity and musculature. It has a prevalence rate as high as 35e50% in women experiencing pain or infertility [1] and sometimes has a peculiar and rare onset [2,3]. Endometriosis is a common disease in menstruating women [4,5] but has also been reported in postmenopausal or surgically castrated women on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) [6]. The common denominator of all such cases is exposure to female hormones [7]. However, endometriosis, a common and important clinical problem in women of reproductive age, has rarely been described in prepubertal girls. In patients with Turner's syndrome or other ovarian dysgenesis, endometriosis is very rare. Some cases are subclinical, and endometriosis is an incidental finding during routine examination. Although endometriosis was described in the medical literature at the end of the 19th century, and the first theories regarding its hystogenesis were developed at the beginning of the 20th century, the real pathogenesis of endometriosis remains unknown. Most studies about the etiology of endometriosis claim that the main possible causes of endometriosis are probably multifactorial. Three theories of histogenesis have been proposed. (1) The metastatic theory [8] proposes the transplantation of endometrial tissue via retrograde menstrual implantation, vascular/lymphatic spread, and intraoperative implantation. (2) The coelomic metaplastic theory [9] suggests that the germinal epithelium of the ovary can be transformed by metaplasia into endometrium.     ABSTRACTObjectives:To perform a meta-analysis of clinical studies on the differences in treatment or research decision-making capacity among patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), Alzheimer's disease (AD), and healthy comparisons (HCs).Design:A systematic search was conducted on Medline/Pubmed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Scopus. Standardized mean differences and random-effects model were used in all cases.Setting:The United States, France, Japan, and China.Participants:Four hundred and ten patients with MCI, 149 with AD, and 368 HCs were included.Measurements:The studies we included in the analysis assessed decisional capacity to consent by the MacArthur Competence Assessment Tool for Treatment (MAcCAT-T), MacArthur Competence Assessment Tool for Clinical Research (MacCAT-CR), Capacity to Consent to Treatment Instrument (CCTI), and University of California Brief Assessment of Capacity to Consent (UBACC).Results:We identified 109 potentially eligible studies from 1672 records, and 7 papers were included in the meta-analysis. The meta-analysis showed that there was significant impairment in a decision-making capacity in MCI patients compared to the HCs group in terms of Understanding (SMD = −1.04, 95% CI: −1.31 to −0.77, P < 0.001; I2 = 52%, P = 0.07), Appreciation (SMD = −0.51, 95% CI: −0.66 to −0.36, P < 0.001; I2 = 0%, P = 0.97), and Reasoning (SMD = −0.62, 95% CI: −0.77, −0.47, P < 0.001; I2=0%, P =0.46). MCI patients scored significantly higher in Understanding (SMD = 1.50, 95% CI: 0.91, 2.09, P = 0.01, I2 = 78%, P = 0.00001) compared to patients affected by AD.Conclusions:Patients affected by MCI are at higher risk of impaired capacity to consent to treatment and research compared to HCs, despite being at lower risk compared to patients affected by AD. Clinicians and researchers need to carefully evaluate decisional capacity in MCI patients providing informed consent

    Soils of the Aversa plain (southern Italy)

    The Aversa plain is one of the most important agricultural areas of the Campania region, combining the presence of very fertile soils, sites of great archaeological interest and growing residential urbanization. In this paper, the soil map (1:50,000 scale) of the Aversa plain is presented. Three main land systems (coastal, alluvial and foothill plains) characterized by different soil types (Andosols, Phaeozems, Cambisols, Vertisols, Arenosols, Histosols, Luvisols) have been identified. However, Andosols are the most widespread soil type (9768 ha) and, along with part of the Phaeozems and Cambisols, represent the most fertile soils of the Aversa plain (first and second classes of the land capability classification). In order to evaluate recent intense soil sealing, its impact over land capability classes was assessed during the last 60 years. Results show that soil sealing in the Aversa plain affected mainly the most fertile first- and second-class soils

    Sexual Intercourse for Induction of Spontaneous Onset of Labor: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

    INTRODUCTION: Sexual intercourse during pregnancy is commonly believed to trigger the onset of contractions and, therefore, labor. However, in low-risk pregnancies, there is neither association with preterm birth, premature rupture of membranes, or low birth weight, nor with spontaneous onset of labor at term. AIM: To evaluate the effectiveness of sexual intercourse for spontaneous onset of labor at term in singleton pregnancies. METHODS: The systematic search was conducted using electronic databases from inception of each database to June 2019. Review of articles also included the abstracts of all references retrieved from the search. Inclusion criteria were randomized controlled trials comparing sexual intercourse in singleton low-risk pregnancies at term with controls (either reduced number of coitus or no coitus) for spontaneous onset of labor. Estimates were pooled using random-effects meta-analysis. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome was the incidence of spontaneous onset of labor. The summary measures were reported as summary relative risk with 95% CI using the random-effects model of DerSimonian and Laird. RESULTS: Data extracted from 3 trials, including 1,483 women with singleton pregnancy at term and cephalic presentation, were analyzed. Women who were randomized in the sexual intercourse group had similar incidence of spontaneous onset of labor compared with control subjects (0.82% vs 0.80%; relative risk 1.02, 95% CI 0.98-1.07). CLINICAL IMPLICATION: Sexual intercourse should not be restricted in low-risk term pregnancies. Further studies are needed to properly evaluate the impact of orgasm, penetration, condom use, frequency of intercourse and other factors on induction of labor at term. STRENGTH & LIMITATIONS: Our study has several strengths. The three included trials had low risk of allocation bias; intention-to-treat analysis was used; this is the first meta-analysis on this issue so far. Limitations mainly depend on the design of the included studies. Firstly, compliance to the protocol relied on self-reporting by patients; in addition, not all the features of sexual intercourse could be adequately assessed (orgasm, nipple stimulation, sexual positions, etc.). CONCLUSION: In women with singleton, cephalic, low-risk pregnancies, sexual intercourse at term does not significantly increase the incidence of spontaneous onset of labor

    Epithelioid variant of pleomorphic liposarcoma as potential mimic of metastatic carcinoma

    We report a case of epithelioid variant of pleomorphic liposarcoma (EPL) found in the the infrapatellar fat pad of Hoffa of a 31-year old male. Histologically, the predominant population was formed by epithelioid cells with eosinophilic or clear cytoplasm admixed with rare pleomorphic lipoblasts. The immunohistochemical panel was not helpful in the diagnosis. FISH analysis using the locus-specific indicator CHOP (12q13) dual color break apart was applied to representative formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections. The result of FISH indicated a rearranged CHOP (DDIT3) gene and confirmed the diagnosis of EPL. The EPL should be differentiated from a metastatic carcinoma or other type of sarcoma. In these cases a clinicopathological correlation and an exhaustive sampling of the specimen for demonstration of lipogenic areas or pleomorphic lipoblasts is always necessary. FISH with demonstration of CHOP gene rearrangement is useful in providing specific ancillary information for the difficult differential diagnosis of this case
