Understanding Rates of Marijuana Use and Consequences Among Adolescents in a Changing Legal Landscape.
Purpose of Review:There is not one answer to address whether marijuana use has increased, decreased, or stayed the same given changes in state legalization of medical and non-medical marijuana in the USA. Recent Findings:Evidence suggests some health benefits for medical marijuana; however, initiation of marijuana use is a risk factor for developing problem cannabis use. Though use rates have remained stable over recent years, about one in three 10th graders report marijuana use, most adolescents do not view the drug as harmful, and over 650,000 youth aged 12 to 17 struggle with cannabis use disorder. Summary:Although the health benefits of medical marijuana are becoming better understood, more research is needed. Intervention and prevention programs must better address effects of marijuana, acknowledging that while there may be some benefits medically, marijuana use can affect functioning during adolescence when the brain is still developing

El presente capítulo pretende despertar el interés en el aprendizaje de algunos conceptos desarrollados en la cátedra de Biogeografía, reconociendo aportes en el análisis de las transformaciones territoriales en su dimensión ambiental. Centra la mirada particularmente en las características de los suelos y los ciclos biogeoquímicos considerando sus alteraciones en el contexto de las cadenas globales de mercantilización e importancia en la construcción de respuestas alternativas al modelo mercantilizador de la naturaleza. Emergence of colistin resistance in Klebsiella pneumoniae ST15 disseminating blaKPC-2 in a novel genetic platform
Objectives: Isolation of colistin- and carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CCR-Kp) is increasing in hospital settings worldwide, which is related to increased morbidity, mortality and healthcare costs. The aim of this work was to perform whole-genome sequencing (WGS), genomic and phylogenetic analysis, and conjugation assays of an extensively drug-resistant (XDR) CCR-Kp isolate from Argentina. Methods: WGS of strain KpS26 isolated from a bloodstream infection was performed using Illumina MiSeq-I, and de novo assembly was achieved using SPAdes v.3.11. A maximum likelihood tree was created using MEGA7 based on core genome single nucleotide polymorphisms from whole-genome alignment of K. pneumoniae isolates identified in silico as sequence type 15 (ST15). The resistome, plasmids and integrons were analysed using ResFinder, AMRFinderPlus, ISfinder, plasmidSPAdes, PlasmidFinder and IntegronFinder. Standard conjugation was performed. Results: KpS26 belonged to ST15, which is less common than ST258, ST25 and ST11 that are globally reported as responsible for CCR-Kp outbreaks. Fourteen transferable antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs), including blaKPC-2 in a novel genetic platform transferable by conjugation, were detected contributing to the XDR phenotype. The amino acid substitution T157P in the protein encoded by the pmrB gene of KpS26, previously reported as being responsible for resistance to colistin in K. pneumoniae lineages globally disseminated, was also identified in this strain. Conclusion: The XDR CCR-Kp isolate analysed here shows that ST15 is also disseminating blaKPC-2 in Argentina alongside other ARGs, evidencing that KPC epidemiology continues to be shaped by intricate and assorted ways of lateral gene transfer.Fil: Alvarez, Verónica Elizabeth. HIV-1 protease inhibitors and clinical malaria: A secondary analysis of the AIDS Clinical Trials Group A5208 study
HIV-1 protease inhibitors (PIs) have antimalarial activity in vitro and in murine models. The potential beneficial effect of HIV-1 PIs on malaria has not been studied in clinical settings. We used data from Adult AIDS Clinical Trials Group A5208 sites where malaria is endemic to compare the incidence of clinically diagnosed malaria among HIV-infected adult women randomized to either lopinavir/ritonavir (LPV/r)-based antiretroviral therapy (ART) or to nevirapine (NVP)-based ART. We calculated hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals. We conducted a recurrent events analysis that included both first and second clinical malarial episodes and also conducted analyses to assess the sensitivity of results to outcome misclassification. Among the 445 women in this analysis, 137 (31%) received a clinical diagnosis of malaria at least once during follow-up. Of these 137, 72 (53%) were randomized to LPV/r-based ART. Assignment to the LPV/r treatment group (n = 226) was not consistent with a large decrease in the hazard of first clinical malarial episode (hazard ratio = 1.11 [0.79 to 1.56]). The results were similar in the recurrent events analysis. Sensitivity analyses indicated the results were robust to reasonable levels of outcome misclassification. In this study, the treatment with LPV/r compared to NVP had no apparent beneficial effect on the incidence of clinical malaria among HIV-infected adult women. Additional research concerning the effects of PI-based therapy on the incidence of malaria diagnosed by more specific criteria and among groups at a higher risk for severe disease is warranted. What is involved and what is necessary for complex linguistic and nonlinguistic auditory processing: evidence from functional magnetic resonance imaging and lesion data
We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in conjunction with a voxel-based approach to lesion symptom mapping to quantitatively evaluate the similarities and differences between brain areas involved in language and environmental sound comprehension. In general, we found that language and environmental sounds recruit highly overlapping cortical regions, with cross-domain differences being graded rather than absolute. Within language-based regions of interest, we found that in the left hemisphere, language and environmental sound stimuli evoked very similar volumes of activation, whereas in the right hemisphere, there was greater activation for environmental sound stimuli. Finally, lesion symptom maps of aphasic patients based on environmental sounds or linguistic deficits [Saygin, A. P., Dick, F., Wilson, S. W., Dronkers, N. F., & Bates, E. Brain, 126, 928–945, 2003] were generally predictive of the extent of blood oxygenation level dependent fMRI activation across these regions for sounds and linguistic stimuli in young healthy subjects

Inflation and Dark Energy from spectroscopy at z > 2
The expansion of the Universe is understood to have accelerated during two
epochs: in its very first moments during a period of Inflation and much more
recently, at z < 1, when Dark Energy is hypothesized to drive cosmic
acceleration. The undiscovered mechanisms behind these two epochs represent
some of the most important open problems in fundamental physics. The large
cosmological volume at 2 < z < 5, together with the ability to efficiently
target high- galaxies with known techniques, enables large gains in the
study of Inflation and Dark Energy. A future spectroscopic survey can test the
Gaussianity of the initial conditions up to a factor of ~50 better than our
current bounds, crossing the crucial theoretical threshold of
of order unity that separates single field and
multi-field models. Simultaneously, it can measure the fraction of Dark Energy
at the percent level up to , thus serving as an unprecedented test of
the standard model and opening up a tremendous discovery space

Dynamics of central and peripheral immunomodulation in a murine glioma model
Immunosuppression by gliomas contributes to tumor progression and treatment resistance. It is not known when immunosuppression occurs during tumor development but it likely involves cross-talk among tumor cells, tumor-associated macrophages and microglia (TAMs), and peripheral as well as tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs). We have performed a kinetic study of this immunomodulation, assessing the dynamics of immune infiltration and function, within the central nervous system (CNS) and peripherally. PDGF-driven murine glioma cells were injected into the white matter of 13 mice. Four mice were sacrificed 13 days post-injection (dpi), four mice at 26 dpi, and five mice at 40 dpi. Using multiparameter flow cytometry, splenic T cells were assessed for FoxP3 expression to identify regulatory T cells (Tregs) and production of IFN-γ and IL-10 after stimulation with PMA/ionomycin; within the CNS, CD4+ TILs were quantified, and TAMs were quantified and assessed for TNF-α and IL-10 production after stimulation with LPS. Peripheral changes associated with tumor development were noted prior to effects within the CNS. The percentage of FoxP3+ regulatory T cells (Tregs) increased by day 26, with elevated frequencies throughout the duration of the study. This early increase in Tregs was paralleled by an increase in IL-10 production from Tregs. At the final time points examined (tumor morbidity or 40 dpi), there was an increase in the frequency of TAMs with decreased capacity to secrete TNF-α. An increase in TIL frequency was also observed at these final time points. These data provide insight into the kinetics of the immunosuppressive state associated with tumor growth in a murine model of human gliomas. Functional impairment of TAMs occurs relatively late in the course of GBM tumor growth, potentially providing a window of opportunity for therapeutic strategies directed towards preventing their functional impairment
