The new scottish parliament project : a content analysis of two broadsheet newspapers

The new Scottish Parliament project in Edinburgh is intended to be a unique symbol of devolution and national distinctiveness. However, the project suffered significant setbacks due to cost escalations and programme delays. Since the projects inception in 1997, the design, construction and management of the project have undergone intense scrutiny from media journalists. In particular, two ‘broadsheet’ newspapers, The Scotsman and The Herald have documented the legacy surrounding this unique project. A content analysis of sample headlines from both newspapers suggests that The Scotsman has predominantly employed emotive metaphors in reporting and that this tone tends to emphasise the problems encountered by the project team. The Herald has taken a less judgemental approach with the majority of its reports being less bias in nature. Only a handful of reports could be considered positive in promoting the project and this may have ramifications for the image of the construction industry

The title compound, C30H27O8P (2), was formed as one of two products {(1) [Krawczyk et al. (2010 ▶). Acta Cryst. E66 (cv2752)] and (2)} in the reaction of dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate with triphenylphosphine. The molecule of (2) consists of a five-membered carbocyclic ring. The P atom is a part of a triphenylphosphoranylidene substituent. In contrast to (1), the five-membered ring of (2) is planar, the r.m.s. deviation being only 0.009 (2) Å

When stealing, go for millions? Quantitative analysis of white-collar crime sentencing in Poland.

The aim of this article is to analyse the length of custodial sentences for white-collar crimes in the context of Polish criminal policy. The analyses, based on the new and original data set obtained from case files, showed the non-linear dependency between the custodial sentence and the damage caused by a given fraud. From the perspective of the criminal law and economics, such a non-linearity may generate incentives for committing frauds on a bigger scale, because as the scale increases the relative severity of punishment decreases. Moreover, the gender bias in sentencing for the white-collar crimes in Poland was proven and in such cases women not only did receive lower custodial sentences, but also those ruled by female judges were lower

INTRODUCTION: One of the main aims of the Polish Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is to rescue and protect human health and life. The aim of the study is to analyze specialist medical rescue team (S MRT) interventions in the county of Sokołów in 2016. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 1361 ambulance call reports from the period January 1st to December 31st 2016 of rescue activities performed during interventions by S MRTs in Sokołów county. RESULTS: The mean time of arrival of S MRTs to the patient was 9.42 ± 7.5 min (max time is 49 min, min time is 1 minute). Average departure time was 51.8 ± 23.5 min (max 218 min, min 23.5 min). The highest incidence of S MRTs operations was observed in July (n = 134, 10%) and lowest in February (n = 95, 7%). CONCLUSIONS: Emergency Medical System reaction time for patients in our region does not differ from other data available in the literature

The title compound, C30H27O8P (1), was formed as one of two products {(1) and (2) [Krawczyk et al. (2010 ▶). Acta Cryst. E66 (cv2753)]} in the reaction of dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate with triphenylphosphine. The molecule of (1) consists of a five-membered ring, in which the P atom is incorporated. One of the phenyl groups of the triphenylphosphine migrated to a vicinal C atom during the reaction. The five-membered ring of (1) is corrugated [r.m.s. deviation = 0.0719 (8) Å], whereas that in compound (2) is planar, the r.m.s. deviation being only 0.009 (2) Å

“Clicking“ fragment leads to novel dual-binding cholinesterase inhibitors

Cholinesterase inhibitors are potent therapeutics in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Among them, dual binding ligands have recently gained a lot of attention. We discovered novel dual-binding cholinesterase inhibitors, using “clickable” fragments, which bind to either catalytic active site (CAS) or peripheral anionic site (PAS) of the enzyme. Copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition allowed to effectively synthesize a series of final heterodimers, and modeling and kinetic studies confirmed their ability to bind to both CAS and PAS. A potent acetylcholinesterase inhibitor with IC50 = 18 nM (compound 23g) was discovered. A target-guided approach to link fragments by the enzyme itself was tested using butyrylcholinesterase

Evaluation of symptoms of anxiety and depression in women with breast cancer after breast amputation or conservation treated with adjuvant chemotherapy

Introduction Evaluation of the presence of symptoms of anxiety and depression in women treated for breast cancer who underwent surgical procedure using one of two alternative methods, either radical mastectomy or breast conserving treatment (BCT). Material and Methods A questionnaire survey involved 85 patients treated in a conservative way and 94 patients after breast amputation. Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and depression degree evaluation questionnaire were used in the study. The patients’ responses were statistically analyzed. Results Based on the HADS questionnaire, the total anxiety level in the group of women treated with BCT was 6.96 points, while in the group of patients who had undergone mastectomy the value was 7.8 points. The observed results were statistically significant. In the case of depression, the following values were found: patients after amputation had 8.04 scale value points, and those after BCT had 6.8 scale value points. The observed differences were statistically significant. Negative correlation was found between the level of anxiety and depression. The total level of depression evaluated using the Beck scale was 16.3 points in the BCT group, which means that they suffered from mild depression, while in the mastectomy group the level was 19.6 points, which corresponds to moderate depression. Conclusions The level of anxiety and depression among women with breast cancer was influenced by the type of the applied surgical procedure and adjuvant chemotherapy. Demographic variables did not influence the level of anxiety and depression
