    This study had its beginning in 1944 when the American Academy of Pediatrics passed a resolution to make available to all mothers and children of the United states all essential preventive, diagnostic and curative services of high quality which used in cooperation with other services for children will make this country an ideal place for children to grow into responsible citizens. They realized that the first requisite to accomplishing their objective was a comprehensive knowledge of available facilities. They initiated a national survey of child health facilities through the various state Academies and Societies of Pediatrics. Dr. W. W. Nicholson, President of the Kentucky Pediatric Society, directed the gathering of the data used in this study for the state of Kentucky and has the over-all responsibility for the presentation of this report.     Photovoltaic water pumping applications: Assessment of the near-term market

    Water pumping applications represent a potential market for photovoltaics. The price of energy for photovoltaic systems was compared to that of utility line extensions and diesel generators. The potential domestic demand was defined in the government, commercial/institutional and public sectors. The foreign demand and sources of funding for water pumping systems in the developing countries were also discussed briefly. It was concluded that a near term domestic market of at least 240 megawatts and a foreign market of about 6 gigawatts exist

    A complete characterization of plateaued Boolean functions in terms of their Cayley graphs

    In this paper we find a complete characterization of plateaued Boolean functions in terms of the associated Cayley graphs. Precisely, we show that a Boolean function ff is ss-plateaued (of weight =2(n+s2)/2=2^{(n+s-2)/2}) if and only if the associated Cayley graph is a complete bipartite graph between the support of ff and its complement (hence the graph is strongly regular of parameters e=0,d=2(n+s2)/2e=0,d=2^{(n+s-2)/2}). Moreover, a Boolean function ff is ss-plateaued (of weight 2(n+s2)/2\neq 2^{(n+s-2)/2}) if and only if the associated Cayley graph is strongly 33-walk-regular (and also strongly \ell-walk-regular, for all odd 3\ell\geq 3) with some explicitly given parameters.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, Proceedings of Africacrypt 201

    Trehalose Uptake through P2X7 Purinergic Channels Provides Dehydration Protection

    The tetra-anionic form of ATP (ATP4-) is known to induce monovalent and divalent ion fluxes in cells that express purinergic P2X7 receptors (Steinberg et al., 1987; Sung et al., 1985), and with sustained application of ATP it has been shown that dyes as large as 831 daltons can permeate the cell membrane (Steinberg et al, 1987). The current study explores the kinetics of loading α,α-trehalose (342 daltons) into ATP stimulated J774.A1 cells, which are known to express the purinergic P2X7 receptor (Steinberg et al., 1987). Cells that were incubated at 37 ̊C in a 50 mM phosphate buffer (pH 7.0) contailing 225 mM trehalose and 5 mM ATP, were shown to load trehalose linearly over time. Concentrations of ~50 mM were reached within 90 min of incubation. Cells incubated in the same solution at 4 ̊C loaded minimally, consistent with the inactivity of the receptor at low temperatures. However, extended incubation at 37 oC (\u3e60 min) resulted in zero next-day survival, with adverse effects appearing even with incubation periods as short as 30 min. By using a two-step protocol with a short time period at 37 oC to allow pore formation, followed by an extended loading period on ice, cells could be loaded with up to 50 mM trehalose while maintaining good next day recovery (49% ± 12 % by Trypan Blue exclusion, 56 ± 20% by Alamar BlueTM assay). Cells porated by this method and allowed an overnight recovery period exhibited improved dehydration tolerance suggesting a role for ATP poration in the anhydrous preservation of cells
