Colliding axisymmetric pp-waves
An exact solution is found describing the collision of axisymmetric pp-waves
with M=0. They are impulsive in character and their coordinate singularities
become point curvature singularities at the boundaries of the interaction
region. The solution is conformally flat. Concrete examples are given,
involving an ultrarelativistic black hole against a burst of pure radiation or

Disgust sensitivity is not associated with health in a rural Bangladeshi sample.
Disgust can be considered a psychological arm of the immune system that acts to prevent exposure to infectious agents. High disgust sensitivity is associated with greater behavioral avoidance of disease vectors and thus may reduce infection risk. A cross-sectional survey in rural Bangladesh provided no strong support for this hypothesis. In many species, the expression of pathogen- and predator-avoidance mechanisms is contingent on early life exposure to predators and pathogens. Using childhood health data collected in the 1990s, we examined if adults with more infectious diseases in childhood showed greater adult disgust sensitivity: no support for this association was found. Explanations for these null finding and possible directions for future research are discussed
Collecting, analyzing and archiving of ground based infrared solar spectra obtained from several locations
The infrared solar spectrum as observed from the ground under high resolution contains thousands of absorption lines. The majority of these lines are due to compounds that are present in the Earth's atmosphere. Ground based infrared solar spectra contain information concerning the composition of the atmosphere at the time the spectra were obtained. The objective of this program is to record solar spectra from various ground locations, and to analyze and archive these spectra. The analysis consists of determining, for as many of the absorption lines as possible, the molecular species responsible for the absorption, and to verify that current models of infrared transmission match the observed spectra. Archiving is an important part of the program, since a number of the features in the spectra have not been identified. At some later time, when the features are identified, it will be possible to determine the amount of that compound that was present in the atmosphere at the time the spectrum was taken

The Search for Intergalactic Hydrogen Clouds in Voids
I present the results of a search for intergalactic hydrogen clouds in voids.
Clouds are detected by their HI LyA absorption lines in the HST spectra of
low-redshift AGN. The parameter with which the environments of clouds are
characterized is the tidal field, which places a lower limit on the cloud
mass-density which is dynamically stable against disruption. Galaxy redshift
catalogs are used to sum the tidal fields along the lines of sight, sorting
clouds according to tidal field upper, or lower limits. The analytical
methodology employed is designed to detect gas clouds whose expansion following
reionization is restrained by dark matter perturbations. End-products are the
cloud equivalent width distribution functions (EWDF) of catalogs formed by
sorting clouds according to various tidal field upper, or lower limits.
Cumulative EWDFs are steep in voids (S ~ -1.5 \pm 0.2), but flatter in high
tidal field zones (S ~ -0.5 \pm 0.1). Most probable cloud Doppler parameters
are ~30 km/s in voids and ~60 km/s in proximity to galaxies. In voids, the
cumulative line density at low EW (~ 15 mA) is ~ 500 per unit redshift. The
void filling factor is found to be 0.87 <= f_v <= 0.94. The void EWDF is
remarkably uniform over this volume, with a possible tendency for more massive
clouds to be in void centers. The size and nature of the void cloud population
suggested by this study is completely unanticipated by the results of published
3-D simulations, which predict that most clouds are in filamentary structures
around galaxy concentrations, and that very few observable absorbers would lie

Dynamical Chiral Symmetry Breaking on a Brane in Reduced QED
Reduced gauge theories are theories in which while gauge fields propagate in
a bulk, fermion fields are localized on a brane. We study dynamical chiral
symmetry breaking on a 2-brane and a 1-brane in reduced QED_{3+1}, and on a
1-brane in reduced QED_{2+1}. Since, unlike higher dimensional gauge theories,
QED_{3+1} and QED_{2+1} are well defined, their reduced versions can serve as a
laboratory for studying dynamics in a higher dimensional brane world. The
analysis of the Schwinger-Dyson (SD) equations in these theories reveals rich
and quite nontrivial dynamics in which the conformal symmetry and its breakdown
play a crucial role. Explicit solutions of the SD equations in the
near-critical regime are obtained and the character of the corresponding phase

The anaerobic community of an estuarine environment: an analogue for life on Mars
The first step in finding potential extant, and/or extinct, life on Mars is to understand the potential biological processes that may have occurred on Mars and identify biosignatures that such processes would generate. This is dependent on identifying and characterising microbial life in suitable terrestrial analogue environments and reliably distinguishing between biotic and abiotic processes. Chemolithotrophic anaerobic microorganisms, such as methanogens, are ideal organisms for investigating potential life in the martian sub-surface as they represent deeply branched terrestrial species that would likely survive there. Furthermore, the carbon dioxide and hydrogen required for their metabolism are provided by the approximately 96% carbon dioxide atmosphere and hydrogen produced in serpentinisation and other reactions
Chiral Symmetry Breaking in Quenched Massive Strong-Coupling QED
We present results from a study of subtractive renormalization of the fermion
propagator Dyson-Schwinger equation (DSE) in massive strong-coupling quenched
QED. Results are compared for three different fermion-photon proper vertex
{\it Ans\"{a}tze\/}: bare , minimal Ball-Chiu, and
Curtis-Pennington. The procedure is straightforward to implement and
numerically stable. This is the first study in which this technique is used and
it should prove useful in future DSE studies, whenever renormalization is

The decline in youth drinking in England â is everyone drinking less? A quantile regression analysis
Background and Aims: Youth alcohol consumption has declined significantly over the past 15 years in many high income countries, which may have significant public health benefits. However, if the reductions in drinking occur mostly among lighter drinkers who are at lower risk, then rates of alcohol-related harm among young people today and adults in future may not fall in line with consumption. There is conflicting evidence from Swedish school studies with some suggesting all young people are drinking less while others suggest alcohol consumption among heavier drinkers may be stable or rising while average consumption declines. This paper extends the geographic focus of previous research and examines whether the decline in youth drinking is consistent across the consumption distribution in England.
Design: Quantile regression of 15 waves of repeat cross-sectional survey data.
Setting: England, 2001-2016.
Participants: 31, 882 schoolchildren (50.7% male) aged 11-15 who responded to the Smoking Drinking and Drug Use amongst Young People surveys.
Measurements: Past-week alcohol consumption in UK units at each fifth percentile of the consumption distribution.
Findings: Reductions in alcohol consumption occurred at all percentiles of the consumption distribution analysed between 2001 and 2016 but the magnitude of the decline differed across percentiles. The decline in consumption at the 90th percentile (ÎČ = -.21, CI = -.24, - .18) was significantly larger than among either lighter drinkers at the 50th percentile (ÎČ = - .02, CI = -.02, -.01) or heavier drinkers at the 95th percentile (ÎČ = -.16, CI = -.18, -.13).
Conclusions: Alcohol consumption among young people in England appears to be declining across the consumption distribution, and peaks among heavy drinkers. The magnitude of this decline differs significantly between percentiles of the consumption distribution, with consumption falling proportionally less among the lightest, moderate and very heaviest youth drinkers
Probing the central black hole in M87 with gamma-rays
Recent high-sensitivity observation of the nearby radio galaxy M87 have
provided important insights into the central engine that drives the large-scale
outflows seen in radio, optical and X-rays. This review summarizes the
observational status achieved in the high energy (HE;<100 GeV) and very high
energy (VHE; >100 GeV) gamma-ray domains, and discusses the theoretical
progress in understanding the physical origin of this emission and its relation
