SOME EFFECTS OF EDTA AND TETRAPHENYLBORON ON THE ULTRASTRUCTURE OF MITOCHONDRIA IN MOUSE LIVER CELLS
Probing the origin of VHE emission from M 87 with MWL observations in 2010
The large majority of extragalactic very high energy (VHE; E>100 GeV) sources
belongs to the class of active galactic nuclei (AGN), in particular the BL Lac
sub-class. AGNs are characterized by an extremely bright and compact emission
region, powered by a super-massive black hole (SMBH) and an accretion disk, and
relativistic outflows (jets) detected all across the electro-magnetic spectrum.
In BL Lac sources the jet axis is oriented close to the line of sight, giving
rise to a relativistic boosting of the emission. In radio galaxies, on the
other hand, the jet makes a larger angle to the line of sight allowing to
resolve the central core and the jet in great details. The giant radio galaxy M
87 with its proximity (1 6Mpc) and its very massive black hole ((3-6) x 10^9
M_solar) provides a unique laboratory to investigate VHE emission in such
objects and thereby probe particle acceleration to relativistic energies near
SMBH and in jets. M 87 has been established as a VHE emitter since 2005. The
VHE emission displays strong variability on time-scales as short as a day. It
has been subject of a large joint VHE and multi-wavelength (MWL) monitoring
campaign in 2008, where a rise in the 43 GHz VLBA radio emission of the
innermost region (core) was found to coincide with a flaring activity at VHE.
This had been interpreted as a strong indication that the VHE emission is
produced in the direct vicinity of the SMBH black hole. In 2010 again a flare
at VHE was detected triggering further MWL observations with the VLBA, Chandra,
and other instruments. At the same time M 87 was also observed with the
Fermi-LAT telescope at GeV energies and the European VLBI Network (EVN). In

Polymorphism Interaction Analysis (PIA): a method for investigating complex gene-gene interactions
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The risk of common diseases is likely determined by the complex interplay between environmental and genetic factors, including single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Traditional methods of data analysis are poorly suited for detecting complex interactions due to sparseness of data in high dimensions, which often occurs when data are available for a large number of SNPs for a relatively small number of samples. Validation of associations observed using multiple methods should be implemented to minimize likelihood of false-positive associations. Moreover, high-throughput genotyping methods allow investigators to genotype thousands of SNPs at one time. Investigating associations for each individual SNP or interactions between SNPs using traditional approaches is inefficient and prone to false positives.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We developed the Polymorphism Interaction Analysis tool (PIA version 2.0) to include different approaches for ranking and scoring SNP combinations, to account for imbalances between case and control ratios, stratify on particular factors, and examine associations of user-defined pathways (based on SNP or gene) with case status. PIA v. 2.0 detected 2-SNP interactions as the highest ranking model 77% of the time, using simulated data sets of genetic models of interaction (minor allele frequency = 0.2; heritability = 0.01; N = 1600) generated previously [Velez DR, White BC, Motsinger AA, Bush WS, Ritchie MD, Williams SM, Moore JH: A balanced accuracy function for epistasis modeling in imbalanced datasets using multifactor dimensionality reduction. Genet Epidemiol 2007, 31:306â315.]. Interacting SNPs were detected in both balanced (20 SNPs) and imbalanced data (case:control 1:2 and 1:4, 10 SNPs) in the context of non-interacting SNPs.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>PIA v. 2.0 is a useful tool for exploring gene*gene or gene*environment interactions and identifying a small number of putative associations which may be investigated further using other statistical methods and in replication study populations.</p

Schooling for violence and peace : how does peace education differ from ânormalâ schooling?
This article reviews literature on the roles of schooling in both reproducing and actively perpetrating violence, and sets out an historical explanation of why schools are socially constructed in such a way as to make these roles possible. It then discusses notions of peace education in relation to one particular project in England before using empirical data from research on the project to examine contrasts between peace education approaches and ânormalâ schooling from the viewpoints of project workers, pupils and teachers. It concludes that such contrasts and tensions do indeed exist and that this raises serious questions about the compatibility of peace education and formal schooling
Multifrequency Radiation of Extragalactic Large-Scale Jets
Large-scale extragalactic jets, observed to extend from a few to a few
hundred kiloparsecs from active galactic nuclei, are now studied over many
decades in frequency of electromagnetic spectrum, from radio until (possibly)
TeV gamma rays. For hundreds of known radio jets, only about 25 are observed at
optical frequencies. Most of them are relatively short and faint, with only a
few exceptions, like 3C 273 or M 87, allowing for detailed spectroscopic and
morphological studies. Somewhat surprisingly, the large-scale jets can be very
prominent in X-rays. Up to now, about 25 jets were detected within the 1 - 10
keV energy range, although the nature of this emission is still under debate.
In general, both optical and X-ray jet observations present serious problems
for standard radiation models for the considered objects. Recent TeV
observations of M 87 suggest the possibility of generating large photon fluxes
at these high energies by its extended jet.
In this paper we summarize information about multiwavelength emission of the
large-scale jets, and we point out several modifications of the standard jet
radiation models (connected with relativistic bulk velocities, jet radial
stratification and particle energization all the way along the jet), which can
possibly explain some of the mentioned puzzling observations. We also comment

The induction of microRNA-16 in colon cancer cells by protein arginine deiminase inhibition causes a p53-dependent cell cycle arrest.
Protein Arginine Deiminases (PADs) catalyze the post-translational conversion of peptidyl-Arginine to peptidyl-Citrulline in a calcium-dependent, irreversible reaction. Evidence is emerging that PADs play a role in carcinogenesis. To determine the cancer-associated functional implications of PADs, we designed a small molecule PAD inhibitor (called Chor-amidine or Cl-amidine), and tested the impact of this drug on the cell cycle. Data derived from experiments in colon cancer cells indicate that Cl-amidine causes a G1 arrest, and that this was p53-dependent. In a separate set of experiments, we found that Cl-amidine caused a significant increase in microRNA-16 (miRNA-16), and that this increase was also p53-dependent. Because miRNA-16 is a putative tumor suppressor miRNA, and others have found that miRNA-16 suppresses proliferation, we hypothesized that the p53-dependent G1 arrest associated with PAD inhibition was, in turn, dependent on miRNA-16 expression. Results are consistent with this hypothesis. As well, we found the G1 arrest is at least in part due to the ability of Cl-amidine-mediated expression of miRNA-16 to suppress its\u27 G1-associated targets: cyclins D1, D2, D3, E1, and cdk6. Our study sheds light into the mechanisms by which PAD inhibition can protect against or treat colon cancer
