    Spatiotemporal Model for Kerr Comb Generation in Whispering Gallery Mode Resonators

    We establish an exact partial differential equation to model Kerr comb generation in whispering-gallery mode resonators. This equation is a variant of the Lugiato-Lefever equation that includes higher-order dispersion and nonlinearity. This spatio-temporal model, whose main variable is the total intracavity field, is significantly more suitable than the modal expansion approach for the theoretical understanding and the numerical simulation of wide-span combs. It allows us to explore pulse formation in which a large number of modes interact cooperatively. This versatile approach can be straightforwardly extended to include higher-order dispersion, as well as other phenomena like Raman, Brillouin and Rayleigh scattering. We demonstrate for the first time that when the dispersion is anomalous, Kerr comb generation can arise as the spectral signature of dissipative cavity solitons, leading to wide-span combs with low pumping.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure

    Damage coefficients in low resistivity silicon

    Electron and proton damage coefficients are determined for low resistivity silicon based on minority-carrier lifetime measurements on bulk material and diffusion length measurements on solar cells. Irradiations were performed on bulk samples and cells fabricated from four types of boron-doped 0.1 ohm-cm silicon ingots, including the four possible combinations of high and low oxygen content and high and low dislocation density. Measurements were also made on higher resistivity boron-doped bulk samples and solar cells. Major observations and conclusions from the investigation are discussed

    Photometric and spectroscopic gamma-ray observations of solar transient phenomena using long duration balloons

    A program currently in progress to conduct extended duration spectroscopic and photometric observation of solar X-ray phenomena from balloons is described. High photometric sensitivity to weak hard X-ray bursts is attained using a 600 sq cm array of phoswich scintillators. High spectral resolution for stronger bursts is available from an array of planar germanium detectors. These instruments are carried in a novel balloon gondola dssigned for the 15 to 20 day float durations available through using conventional zero pressure balloons in the radiation controlled (RACOON) mode

    A Preliminary Report on the Frequency of Scrapie Susceptibility Alleles in Hampshire Sheep

    Blood samples were collected from a total of 201 animals in five purebred Hampshire sheep flocks. DNA was isolated from the samples, and the protein-coding region of the prion protein gene was amplified using the polymerase chain reaction. The allelic frequencies of the prion protein codons 171 and 136 were determined. Results revealed that the codon 171 alleles Q, R, and H were present at frequencies of 72%, 27% and 1%, respectively. A subset of samples (n=48) was randomly selected for codon 136 genotyping. The codon 136 V allele, an allele not frequently observed in Suffolk sheep, was present in animals from three of five flocks at a frequency ranging from 7 to 33% of the animals tested within each flock. These data comprise the first report on the prevalence of scrapie susceptibility alleles in Hampshire sheep

    It is demonstrated that several series of conformal field theories, while satisfying braid group statistics, can still be described in the conventional setting of the DHR theory, i.e. their superselection structure can be understood in terms of a compact DHR gauge group. Besides theories with only simple sectors, these include (the untwisted part of) c=1 orbifold theories and level two so(N) WZW theories.     Gauge covariance and the fermion-photon vertex in three- and four- dimensional, massless quantum electrodynamics

    In the quenched approximation, the gauge covariance properties of three vertex Ans\"{a}tze in the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the fermion self energy are analysed in three- and four- dimensional quantum electrodynamics. Based on the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis effective action, it is inferred that the spectral representation used for the vertex in the gauge technique cannot support dynamical chiral symmetry breaking. A criterion for establishing whether a given Ansatz can confer gauge covariance upon the Schwinger-Dyson equation is presented and the Curtis and Pennington Ansatz is shown to satisfy this constraint. We obtain an analytic solution of the Schwinger-Dyson equation for quenched, massless three-dimensional quantum electrodynamics for arbitrary values of the gauge parameter in the absence of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking.Comment: 17 pages, PHY-7143-TH-93, REVTE

    A Comprehensive Survey of Brane Tilings

    An infinite class of 4d4d N=1\mathcal{N}=1 gauge theories can be engineered on the worldvolume of D3-branes probing toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds. This kind of setup has multiple applications, ranging from the gauge/gravity correspondence to local model building in string phenomenology. Brane tilings fully encode the gauge theories on the D3-branes and have substantially simplified their connection to the probed geometries. The purpose of this paper is to push the boundaries of computation and to produce as comprehensive a database of brane tilings as possible. We develop efficient implementations of brane tiling tools particularly suited for this search. We present the first complete classification of toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds with toric diagrams up to area 8 and the corresponding brane tilings.     It is well documented that blood pressure changes with age, and the effect is particularly pronounced in females. However, few studies have examined blood pressure in aged individuals, and most animal studies have been done with male rats. Our goal was to investigate responses to experimental hypotension in aged females, comparing activity in central nervous system areas implicated in blood pressure control in young and aged female rats. Isoproterenol (ISOP) is a B-adrenergic agonist that produces hypotension, thereby activating the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and baroreceptors located in the aorta and great veins. Input from baroreceptors terminates in the hindbrain Nucleus of the Solitary Tract (NTS), whereas circulating hormones are detected by the adjacent Area Postrema (AP). Accordingly, we assessed neural activation in these areas using immunohistochemical labeling for the fos protein.The results showed a marked difference in numbers of fos+ neurons between young and aged female rats across both areas in response to ISOP. Fos in aged females was blunted in both caudal and middle levels of the NTS and throughout the AP. We conclude that aged females have an impaired response to baroreceptor input after hypotension and are less sensitive to hormones, such as Ang II, that are associated with hypotension. Thus, neurons in the hindbrain areas involved in cardiovascular control may play a role in age-related changes in blood pressure in females
