Considerations for the design of an onboard air traffic situation display
The basic concept of remoting information to the cockpit is used to design and develop a computerized airborne traffic situation display device that automatically selects and presents segments of a controller's scope to the aircraft pilot via a narrow band digital data link. These data are integrated with aircraft heading and navigation information to provide a display useful in congested air space. The display can include alphanumerical symbols, air route maps, and controller instructions
ASMs and Operational Algorithmic Completeness of Lambda Calculus
We show that lambda calculus is a computation model which can step by step
simulate any sequential deterministic algorithm for any computable function
over integers or words or any datatype. More formally, given an algorithm above
a family of computable functions (taken as primitive tools, i.e., kind of
oracle functions for the algorithm), for every constant K big enough, each
computation step of the algorithm can be simulated by exactly K successive
reductions in a natural extension of lambda calculus with constants for
functions in the above considered family. The proof is based on a fixed point
technique in lambda calculus and on Gurevich sequential Thesis which allows to
identify sequential deterministic algorithms with Abstract State Machines. This
extends to algorithms for partial computable functions in such a way that
finite computations ending with exceptions are associated to finite reductions
leading to terms with a particular very simple feature.Comment: 37 page
The Structure and Evolution of Magnetized Cloud Cores in a Zero--Density Background
Molecular-line observations of star-forming cloud cores indicate that they
are not the flattened structures traditionally considered by theory. Rather,
they are elongated, perhaps in the direction of their internal magnetic field.
We are thus motivated to consider the structure and evolution of axisymmetric,
magnetized clouds that start from a variety of initial states, both flattened
(oblate) and elongated (prolate). We devise a new technique, dubbed the
-method, that allows us to construct magnetostatic equilibria of any
specified shape. We find, in agreement with previous authors, that the field
lines in oblate clouds bend inward. However, those in prolate clouds bow
outward, confining the structures through magnetic tension.
We next follow the quasi-static evolution of these clouds via ambipolar
diffusion, under the assumption of constant core mass. An oblate cloud either
relaxes to a magnetically force-free sphere or, if sufficiently massive,
flattens along its polar axis as its central density runs away. A prolate cloud
always relaxes to a sphere of modest central density. We finally consider the
evolution of an initially spherical cloud subject to the tidal gravity of
neighboring bodies. Although the structure constricts equatorially, it also
shortens along the pole, so that it ultimately flattens on the way to collapse.
In summary, none of our initial states can evolve to the point of collapse
while maintaining an elongated shape. We speculate that this situation will

Molecular and morphometric variation in European populations of the articulate brachiopod <i>Terebeatulina retusa</i>
Molecular and morphometric variation within and between population samples of the articulate brachiopod <i>Terebratulina</i> spp., collected in 1985-1987 from a Norwegian fjord, sea lochs and costal sites in western Scotland, the southern English Channel (Brittany) and the western Mediterranean, were measured by the analysis of variation in the lengths of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) fragments produced by digestion with nine restriction endonucleases and by multivariate statistical analysis of six selected morphometric parameters. Nucleotide difference within each population sample was high. Nucleotide difference between population samples from the Scottish sites, both those that are tidally contiguous and those that appear to be geographically isolated, were not significantly different from zero. Nucleotide differences between the populations samples from Norway, Brittany, Scotland and the western Mediterranean were also very low. A Foundational View on Integration Problems
The integration of reasoning and computation services across system and
language boundaries is a challenging problem of computer science. In this
paper, we use integration for the scenario where we have two systems that we
integrate by moving problems and solutions between them. While this scenario is
often approached from an engineering perspective, we take a foundational view.
Based on the generic declarative language MMT, we develop a theoretical
framework for system integration using theories and partial theory morphisms.
Because MMT permits representations of the meta-logical foundations themselves,
this includes integration across logics. We discuss safe and unsafe integration
schemes and devise a general form of safe integration
Consequences of sexual harassment in sport for female athletes
Sexual harassment research was first undertaken in the workplace and educational settings. Research on sexual harassment in sport is scarce but has grown steadily since the mid-1980s. Even so, very little is known about the causes and/or characteristics and/or consequences of sexual harassment in sport settings. This article reports on the findings from interviews with 25 elite female athletes in Norway who indicated in a prior survey (N =572) that they had experienced sexual harassment from someone in sport. The consequences of the incidents of sexual harassment that were reported were mostly negative, but some also reported that their experiences of sexual harassment had had no consequences for them. âThinking about the incidentsâ, a âdestroyed relationship to the coachâ, and âmore negative view of men in generalâ were the most often negative consequences mentioned. In addition, a surprising number had chosen to move to a different sport or to drop out of elite sport altogether because of the harassment
Protecting the UK Infrastructure: A System to Detect GNSS Jamming and Interference
Abstract The vulnerability of space based position navigation and timing (PNT) systems to RF interference sources is becoming well known outside of the traditional PNT sector for example, into the critical infrastructure operations area. Risk managers of organisations in this area are becoming aware of the vulnerabilities and dependencies in using space based PNT systems. This paper presents work performed and work on-going in the UK, to develop capabilities that provide detection and early warning for operators of critical infrastructure and law enforcement agencies (LEA), to the presence of RF interference in the bands associated with space based PNT. These capabilities can detect and will be able to locate source(s) of RF interference which allows infrastructure operators and LEA to take advantage of quality of service and trust concepts when applied to these space based PNT systems. This paper also presents a case study of the detection of an intentional RF interference device, which impacted upon one organisation's critical infrastructure
Prevalence of sexual harassment among Norwegian female elite athletes in relation to sport type
Although it is often assumed that the prevalence of sexual harassment is different in different sports, this assumption has not been empirically tested. This study considers whether the experience of sexual harassment varies by sport. The female elite athletes (N = 553) in the study participated in 56 different sport disciplines. These were grouped as follows :1) team or individual sports; 2) extent to which clothing required for competition is revealing ; 3) gender structure (male-or female dominated membership statistics); and 4) gender culture (masculine, gender-neutral, or feminine). The data show that sexual harassment occurs in every sport group. Female elite athletes who participated in âmasculineâ sports appear to experience more harassment than women in the other groups. We conclude that, when it comes to female athletesâ experiences of sexual harassment, sport type matters far less than sport participation per se
Early surgical complications after congenital diaphragmatic hernia repair by thoracotomy vs. laparotomy: A bicentric comparison
Purpose:
The surgical strategy for congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) repair remains debated and mainly depends on the training and preference of the surgeon. Our aim was to evaluate the occurrence and nature of surgical reinterventions within the first year of life, following repair through thoracotomy as compared to laparotomy. /
Methods:
This is a retrospective bi-centric cohort study comparing postero-lateral thoracotomy (nâŻ=âŻ55) versus subcostal laparotomy (nâŻ=âŻ62) for CDH repair (IRB: MP001882). We included neonates with isolated, left-sided, Bochdalek-type CDH who were operated on between 2000 and 2017, and had a minimum follow-up of 1 year. Excluded were patients treated prenatally and/or had extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation. Outcomes were occurrence and nature of surgical reinterventions and mortality by 1 year of life. /
Results:
Both groups had comparable neonatal severity risk profiles. The overall surgical reintervention rate by 1 year of age was higher in the thoracotomy group (29.1% vs. 6.5%; pâŻ=âŻ0.001), mainly because of a higher prevalence of acute bowel complications (18.1% vs. 3.2%; pâŻ=âŻ0.012) requiring surgery, such as perforation, obstruction and volvulus. At 1 year of follow-up, groups were similar in terms of recurrence (5.5% vs. 1.6%; pâŻ=âŻ0.341), surgical interventions related to severe gastroesophageal reflux disease (3.6% vs. 1.6%; pâŻ=âŻ0.600) and mortality (5.5% vs. 6.6%; pâŻ=âŻ1.000). /
Conclusion:
Postnatal CDH repair through thoracotomy was associated with a higher rate of surgical reinterventions within the first year of life, especially for severe acute gastro-intestinal complications. There seemed to be no difference in recurrence and mortality rate. /
