    Magnetic Properties of Undoped C60C_{60}

    The Heisenberg antiferromagnet, which arises from the large UU Hubbard model, is investigated on the C60C_{60} molecule and other fullerenes. The connectivity of C60C_{60} leads to an exotic classical ground state with nontrivial topology. We argue that there is no phase transition in the Hubbard model as a function of U/tU/t, and thus the large UU solution is relevant for the physical case of intermediate coupling.     Coherent control of enrichment and conversion of molecular spin isomers

    A theoretical model of nuclear spin conversion in molecules controlled by an external electromagnetic radiation resonant to rotational transition has been developed. It has been shown that one can produce an enrichment of spin isomers and influence their conversion rates in two ways, through coherences and through level population change induced by radiation.     Small-Size Resonant Photoacoustic Cell of Inclined Geometry for Gas Detection

    A photoacoustic cell intended for laser detection of trace gases is represented. The cell is adapted so as to enhance the gas-detection performance and, simultaneously, to reduce the cell size. The cell design provides an efficient cancellation of the window background (a parasite response due to absorption of laser beam in the cell windows) and acoustic isolation from the environment for an acoustic resonance of the cell. The useful photoacoustic response from a detected gas, window background and noise are analyzed in demonstration experiments as functions of the modulation frequency for a prototype cell with the internal volume ~ 0.5 cm^3. The minimal detectable absorption for the prototype is estimated to be ~ 1.2 10^{-8} cm^{-1} W Hz^{-1/2}.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure

    Magic Numbers of Silicon Clusters

    A structural model for intermediate sized silicon clusters is proposed that is able to generate unique structures without any dangling bonds. This structural model consists of bulk-like core of five atoms surrounded by fullerene-like surface. Reconstruction of the ideal fullerene geometry results in the formation of crown atoms surrounded by π\pi-bonded dimer pairs. This model yields unique structures for \Si{33}, \Si{39}, and \Si{45} clusters without any dangling bonds and hence explains why these clusters are least reactive towards chemisorption of ammonia, methanol, ethylene, and water. This model is also consistent with the experimental finding that silicon clusters undergo a transition from prolate to spherical shapes at \Si{27}.     Green manure in coffee systems in the region of Zona da Mata, Minas Gerais: characteristics and kinetics of carbon and nitrogen mineralization.

    The use of green manure may contribute to reduce soil erosion and increase the soil organic matter content and N availability in coffee plantations in the Zona da Mata, State of Minas Gerais, in Southeastern Brazil. The potential of four legumes (A. pintoi, C. mucunoides, S. aterrimum and S. guianensis)to produce above-ground biomass, accumulate nutrients and mineralize N was studied in two coffee plantations of subsistence farmers under different climate conditions. The biomass production of C. mucunoides was influenced by the shade of the coffee plantation.C. mucunoides tended to mineralize more N than the other legumes due to the low polyphenol content and polyphenol/N ratio. In the first year, the crop establishment of A. pintoi in the area took longer than of the other legumes, resulting in lower biomass production and N2 fixation. In the long term, cellulose was the main factor controlling N mineralization. The biochemical characteristics, nutrient accumulation and biomass production of the legumes were greatly influenced by the altitude and position of the area relative to the sun

    Raman scattering in C_{60} and C_{48}N_{12} aza-fullerene: First-principles study

    We carry out large scale {\sl ab initio} calculations of Raman scattering activities and Raman-active frequencies (RAFs) in C48N12{\rm C}_{48}{\rm N}_{12} aza-fullerene. The results are compared with those of C60{\rm C}_{60}. Twenty-nine non-degenerate polarized and 29 doubly-degenerate unpolarized RAFs are predicted for C48N12{\rm C}_{48}{\rm N}_{12}. The RAF of the strongest Raman signal in the low- and high-frequency regions and the lowest and highest RAFs for C48N12{\rm C}_{48}{\rm N}_{12} are almost the same as those of C60{\rm C}_{60}. The study of C60{\rm C}_{60} reveals the importance of electron correlations and the choice of basis sets in the {\sl ab initio} calculations. Our best calculated results for C60{\rm C}_{60} with the B3LYP hybrid density functional theory are in excellent agreement with experiment and demonstrate the desirable efficiency and accuracy of this theory for obtaining quantitative information on the vibrational properties of these molecules.Comment: submitted to Phys.Rev.

    Electron-phonon interaction in C70

    The matrix elements of the deformation potential of C70_{70} are calculated by means of a simple, yet accurate solution of the electron-phonon coupling problem in fullerenes, based on a parametrization of the ground state electronic density of the system in terms of sp2+xsp^{2+x} hybridized orbitals. The value of the calculated dimensionless total electron-phonon coupling constant is λ≈0.1\lambda\approx0.1, an order of magnitude smaller than in C60_{60}, consistent with the lack of a superconducting phase transition in C70_{70}A3_3 fullerite, and in overall agreement with measurements of the broadening of Raman peaks in C70_{70}K4_4. We also calculate the photoemission cross section of C70−_{70}^-, which is found to display less structure than that associated with C60−_{60}^-, in overall agreement with the experimental findings.Comment: To be published in Phys.     Determinants of Organophosphorus Pesticide Urinary Metabolite Levels in Young Children Living in an Agricultural Community

    Organophosphorus (OP) pesticides are used in agriculture and several are registered for home use. As young children age they may experience different pesticide exposures due to varying diet, behavior, and other factors. We measured six OP dialkylphosphate (DAP) metabolites (three dimethyl alkylphosphates (DMAP) and three diethyl alkylphosphates (DEAP)) in urine samples collected from ∌400 children living in an agricultural community when they were 6, 12, and 24 months old. We examined bivariate associations between DAP metabolite levels and determinants such as age, diet, season, and parent occupation. To evaluate independent impacts, we then used generalized linear mixed multivariable models including interaction terms with age. The final models indicated that DMAP metabolite levels increased with age. DMAP levels were also positively associated with daily servings of produce at 6- and 24-months. Among the 6-month olds, DMAP metabolite levels were higher when samples were collected during the summer/spring versus the winter/fall months. Among the 12-month olds, DMAP and DEAP metabolites were higher when children lived ≀60 meters from an agricultural field. Among the 24-month-olds, DEAP metabolite levels were higher during the summer/spring months. Our findings suggest that there are multiple determinants of OP pesticide exposures, notably dietary intake and temporal and spatial proximity to agricultural use.
