    In-situ, real time gas composition measurements for SOFC's using laser spectroscopy

    The use of standard gas composition measurement techniques, such as gas chromatography, in large scale solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC's) operating at high temperatures can be both complex and time consuming. One of the main constraints is the necessity to condense out the water vapour present in the gas streams prior to measurement in the Gas Chromatograph (GC). True gas compositions can only be extracted through back-calculation, with each measurement taking in the order of minutes, and a number of measurement points needed to make the final measurement. For system status monitoring such a time delay between condition changes and measurement is a serious disadvantage. One of the main concerns for systems running on natural gas is the risk of methane slippage through the internal reformer, which increases the risk of carbon formation on the SOFC anode, invariably leading to irreversible loss of performance. It is therefore highly advantageous to measure gas stream compositions within the SOFC system in real time, enabling a rapid response to composition deviation outside of acceptable limits. Gas chromatography can never be made to work as a real-time system status monitoring product solution. A suitable, in-situ, solution for measurement is tuneable diode laser spectroscopy, TDLS. Using this technique it is possible to measure both the gas concentration and system pressure simultaneously for a number of different species, without condensing out the water vapour: reducing analysis time considerably and reducing errors associated with back calculation. In this paper, data taken on an operational fuel cell system is presented for methane, and a comparison with results obtained using a GC is made

    Photo-Realistic Scenes with Cast Shadows Show No Above/Below Search Asymmetries for Illumination Direction

    Visual search is extended from the domain of polygonal figures presented on a uniform field to photo-realistic scenes containing target objects in dense, naturalistic backgrounds. The target in a trial is a computer-rendered rock protruding in depth from a "wall" of rocks of roughly similar size but different shapes. Subjects responded "present" when one rock appeared closer than the rest, owing to occlusions or cast shadows, and "absent" when all rocks appeared to be at the same depth. Results showed that cast shadows can significantly decrease reaction times compared to scenes with no cast shadows, in which the target was revealed only by occlusions of rocks behind it. A control experiment showed that cast shadows can be utilized even for displays involving rocks of several achromatic surface colors (dark through light), in which the shadow cast by the target rock was not the darkest region in the scene. Finally, in contrast with reports of experiments by others involving polygonal figures, we found no evidence for an effect of illumination direction (above vs. below) on search times.Office of Naval Research (N00014-94-1-0597, N00014-95-1-0409

    Approaching Visual Search in Photo-Realistic Scenes

    Visual search is extended from the domain of polygonal figures presented on a uniform background to scenes in which search is for a photo-realistic object in a dense, naturalistic background. Scene generation for these displays relies on a powerful solid modeling program to define the three dimensional forms, surface properties, relative positions, and illumination of the objects and a rendering program to produce an image. Search in the presented experiments is for a rock with specific properties among other, similar rocks, although the method described can be generalized to other situations. Using this technique we explore the effects of illumination and shadows in aiding search for a rock in front of and closer to the viewer than other rocks in the scene. For these scenes, shadows of two different contrast levels can significantly deet¡ease reaction times for displays in which target rocks are similar to distractor rocks. However, when the target rock is itself easily distinguishable from dis tractors on the basis of form, the presence or absence of shadows has no discernible effect. To relate our findings to those for earlier polygonal displays, we simplified the non-shadow displays so that only boundary information remained. For these simpler displays, search slopes (the reaction time as a function of the number of distractors) were significantly faster, indicating that the more complex photo-realistic objects require more time to process for visual search. In contrast with several previous experiments involving polygonal figures, we found no evidence for an effect of illumination direction on search times

    New Methods, Current Trends and Software Infrastructure for NLP

    The increasing use of `new methods' in NLP, which the NeMLaP conference series exemplifies, occurs in the context of a wider shift in the nature and concerns of the discipline. This paper begins with a short review of this context and significant trends in the field. The review motivates and leads to a set of requirements for support software of general utility for NLP research and development workers. A freely-available system designed to meet these requirements is described (called GATE - a General Architecture for Text Engineering). Information Extraction (IE), in the sense defined by the Message Understanding Conferences (ARPA \cite{Arp95}), is an NLP application in which many of the new methods have found a home (Hobbs \cite{Hob93}; Jacobs ed. \cite{Jac92}).     Software Infrastructure for Natural Language Processing

    We classify and review current approaches to software infrastructure for research, development and delivery of NLP systems. The task is motivated by a discussion of current trends in the field of NLP and Language Engineering. We describe a system called GATE (a General Architecture for Text Engineering) that provides a software infrastructure on top of which heterogeneous NLP processing modules may be evaluated and refined individually, or may be combined into larger application systems. GATE aims to support both researchers and developers working on component technologies (e.g. parsing, tagging, morphological analysis) and those working on developing end-user applications (e.g. information extraction, text summarisation, document generation, machine translation, and second language learning). GATE promotes reuse of component technology, permits specialisation and collaboration in large-scale projects, and allows for the comparison and evaluation of alternative technologies.     Visual Execution and Data Visualisation in Natural Language Processing

    We describe GGI, a visual system that allows the user to execute an automatically generated data flow graph containing code modules that perform natural language processing tasks. These code modules operate on text documents. GGI has a suite of text visualisation tools that allows the user useful views of the annotation data that is produced by the modules in the executable graph.     The Tragedy of (Ignoring) the Information Semicommons: A Cultural Environmental Perspective

    The second enclosure movement critique is familiar theoretical territory for scholars concerned with the creeping maximalist impulse of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs). Just as the first enclosure movement relating to real property created controversies concerning social contract and the advertised efficiencies of private real property, so too these concerns are echoed within the context of IPRs. This paper employs the emergent discourse of cultural environmentalism so as to diagnose and resolve IPR issues evident within the information environment. Cultural environmentalism borrows, begs, and steals analytical frameworks from environmentalism, such as those relating to the commons, public choice theory, welfare economics, and ecology. After proffering a brief overview of the second enclosure movement critique and cultural environmentalism, this paper settles on the analytical framework of the commons. Specifically, it is the commons-related tragedies such as the tragedy of the commons, the tragedy of the anticommons, and the tragedy of (ignoring) the information semicommons, that provide insight into critical efficiency concerns that lie dormant within the information environment. Ultimately, the paper argues that to ignore the benefits accruing from the dynamic interaction between private and commons uses of information is a tragedy-the tragedy of (ignoring) the information semicommons
