Wang-Landau sampling in three-dimensional polymers
Monte Carlo simulations using Wang-Landau sampling are performed to study
three-dimensional chains of homopolymers on a lattice. We confirm the accuracy
of the method by calculating the thermodynamic properties of this system. Our
results are in good agreement with those obtained using Metropolis importance
sampling. This algorithm enables one to accurately simulate the usually hardly
accessible low-temperature regions since it determines the density of states in

Is CDM an effective CCDM cosmology?
We show that a cosmology driven by gravitationally induced particle
production of all non-relativistic species existing in the present Universe
mimics exactly the observed flat accelerating CDM cosmology with just
one dynamical free parameter. This kind of scenario includes the creation cold
dark matter (CCDM) model [Lima, Jesus & Oliveira, JCAP 011(2010)027] as a
particular case and also provides a natural reduction of the dark sector since
the vacuum component is not needed to accelerate the Universe. The new cosmic
scenario is equivalent to CDM both at the background and perturbative
levels and the associated creation process is also in agreement with the
universality of the gravitational interaction and equivalence principle.
Implicitly, it also suggests that the present day astronomical observations
cannot be considered the ultimate proof of cosmic vacuum effects in the evolved

Spin-polarized transport in ferromagnetic multilayered semiconductor nanostructures
The occurrence of inhomogeneous spin-density distribution in multilayered
ferromagnetic diluted magnetic semiconductor nanostructures leads to strong
dependence of the spin-polarized transport properties on these systems. The
spin-dependent mobility, conductivity and resistivity in
(Ga,Mn)As/GaAs,(Ga,Mn)N/GaN, and (Si,Mn)/Si multilayers are calculated as a
function of temperature, scaled by the average magnetization of the diluted
magnetic semiconductor layers. An increase of the resistivity near the
transition temperature is obtained. We observed that the spin-polarized
transport properties changes strongly among the three materials.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figure
Asymptotic Entanglement Dynamics and Geometry of Quantum States
A given dynamics for a composite quantum system can exhibit several distinct
properties for the asymptotic entanglement behavior, like entanglement sudden
death, asymptotic death of entanglement, sudden birth of entanglement, etc. A
classification of the possible situations was given in [M. O. Terra Cunha,
{\emph{New J. Phys}} {\bf{9}}, 237 (2007)] but for some classes there were no
known examples. In this work we give a better classification for the possibile
relaxing dynamics at the light of the geometry of their set of asymptotic
states and give explicit examples for all the classes. Although the
classification is completely general, in the search of examples it is
sufficient to use two qubits with dynamics given by differential equations in
Lindblad form (some of them non-autonomous). We also investigate, in each case,

Type-safe evolution of spreadsheets
Lecture Notes in Computer Science Volume 6603, 2011Spreadsheets are notoriously error-prone. To help avoid the introduction of errors when changing spreadsheets, models that capture the structure and interdependencies of spreadsheets at a conceptual level have been proposed. Thus, spreadsheet evolution can be made safe within the confines of a model. As in any other model/instance setting, evolution may not only require changes at the instance level but also at the model level. When model changes are required, the safety of instance evolution can not be guarded by the model alone. We have designed an appropriate representation of spreadsheet models, including the fundamental notions of formulæand references. For these models and their instances, we have designed coupled transformation rules that cover specific spreadsheet evolution steps, such as the insertion of columns in all occurrences of a repeated block of cells. Each model-level transformation rule is coupled with instance level migration rules from the source to the target model and vice versa. These coupled rules can be composed to create compound transformations at the model level inducing compound transformations at the instance level. Nonminimal Maxwell-Chern-Simons-O(3)-sigma vortices: asymmetric potential case
In this work we study a nonlinear gauged O(3)-sigma model with both minimal
and nonminimal coupling in the covariant derivative. Using an asymmetric scalar
potential, the model is found to exhibit both topological and non-topological

Multifocal: a strategic bidirectional transformation language for XML schemas
Lenses are one of the most popular approaches to define bidirectional transformations between data models. However, writing a lens transformation typically implies describing the concrete steps that convert values in a source schema to values in a target schema. In contrast, many XML-based languages allow writing structure-shy programs that manipulate only specific parts of XML documents without having to specify the behavior for the remaining structure. In this paper, we propose a structure-shy bidirectional two-level transformation language for XML Schemas, that describes generic type-level transformations over schema representations coupled with value-level bidirectional lenses for document migration. When applying these two-level programs to particular schemas, we employ an existing algebraic rewrite system to optimize the automatically-generated lens transformations, and compile them into Haskell bidirectional executables. We discuss particular examples involving the generic evolution of recursive XML Schemas, and compare their performance gains over non-optimized definitions.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologi
A semiquantitative approach to the impurity-band-related transport properties of GaMnAs nanolayers
We investigate the spin-polarized transport of GaMnAs nanolayers in which a
ferromagnetic order exists below a certain transition temperature. Our
calculation for the self-averaged resistivity takes into account the existence
of an impurity band determining the extended ("metallic" transport) or
localized (hopping by thermal excitation) nature of the states at and near the
Fermi level. Magnetic order and resistivity are inter-related due to the
influence of the spin polarization of the impurity band and the effect of the
Zeeman splitting on the mobility edge. We obtain, for a given range of Mn
concentration and carrier density, a "metallic" behavior in which the transport
by extended carriers dominates at low temperature, and is dominated by the
thermally excited localized carriers near and above the transition temperature.
This gives rise to a conspicuous hump of the resistivity which has been
experimentally observed and brings light onto the relationship between
transport and magnetic properties of this material
Chemosymbiotic species from the Gulf of Cadiz
Previous work in the mud volcanoes from the Gulf
of Cadiz (South Iberian Margin) revealed a high number
of chemosymbiotic species, namely bivalves and siboglinid
polychaetes. In this study we give an overview of the distribution
and life styles of these species in the Gulf of Cadiz,
determine the role of autotrophic symbionts in the nutrition
of selected species using stable isotope analyses ( 13C, 15N
and 34S) and investigate the intra-specific variation of isotope
signatures within and between study sites. During our
studies, we identified twenty siboglinidae and nine bivalve
chemosymbiotic species living in fifteen mud volcanoes.
Solemyid bivalves and tubeworms of the genus Siboglinum
are widespread in the study area, whereas other species
were found in a single mud volcano (e.g. “Bathymodiolus”
mauritanicus) or restricted to deeper mud volcanoes (e.g.
Polybrachia sp., Lamelisabella denticulata). Species distribution
suggests that different species may adjust their position
within the sediment according to their particular needs,
and to the intensity and variability of the chemical substrata
supply. Tissue stable isotope signatures for selected
species are in accordance with values found in other studies,
with thiotrophy as the dominant nutritional pathway, and
with methanotrophy and mixotrophy emerging as secondary
strategies. The heterogeneity in terms of nutrient sources (expressed
in the high variance of nitrogen and sulphur values)
and the ability to exploit different resources by the different
species may explain the high diversity of chemosymbiotic
species found in the Gulf of Cadiz. This study increases the
knowledge on distributional patterns and resource partitioning
of chemosymbiotic species and highlights how trophic
fuelling varies on spatial scales with direct implications to
seep assemblages and potentially to the biodiversity of continental
margin
New Constraints on the Variable Equation of State Parameter from X-Ray Gas Mass Fractions and SNe Ia
Recent measurements are suggesting that we live in a flat Universe and that
its present accelerating stage is driven by a dark energy component whose
equation of state may evolve in time. Assuming two different parameterizations
for the function , we constrain their free parameters from a joint
analysis involving measurements from X-Ray luminosity of galaxy clusters and
