Fluctuations of the correlation dimension at metal-insulator transitions
We investigate numerically the inverse participation ratio, , of the 3D
Anderson model and of the power-law random banded matrix (PRBM) model at
criticality. We found that the variance of scales with system size
as , being the
correlation dimension and the system dimension. Therefore the concept of a
correlation dimension is well defined in the two models considered. The 3D
Anderson transition and the PRBM transition for (see the text for the
definition of ) are fairly similar with respect to all critical magnitudes

Coherent matter waves emerging from Mott-insulators
We study the formation of (quasi-)coherent matter waves emerging from a Mott
insulator for strongly interacting bosons on a one-dimensional lattice. It has
been shown previously that a quasi-condensate emerges at momentum k=\pi/2a,
where a is the lattice constant, in the limit of infinitely strong repulsion
(hard-core bosons). Here we show that this phenomenon persists for all values
of the repulsive interaction that lead to a Mott insulator at a commensurate
filling. The non-equilibrium dynamics of hard-core bosons is treated exactly by
means of a Jordan-Wigner transformation, and the generic case is studied using
a time-dependent density matrix renormalization group technique. Different

Nonperturbative Scaling Theory of Free Magnetic Moment Phases in Disordered Metals
The crossover between a free magnetic moment phase and a Kondo phase in low
dimensional disordered metals with dilute magnetic impurities is studied.
We perform a finite size scaling analysis of the distribution of the Kondo
temperature as obtained from a numerical renormalization group calculation of
the local magnetic susceptibility and from the solution of the self-consistent
Nagaoka-Suhl equation. We find a sizable fraction of free (unscreened) magnetic
moments when the exchange coupling falls below a disorder-dependent critical
value . Our numerical results show that between the free moment
phase due to Anderson localization and the Kondo screened phase there is a
phase where free moments occur due to the appearance of random local pseudogaps
at the Fermi energy whose width and power scale with the elastic scattering

Connection between low energy effective Hamiltonians and energy level statistics
We study the level statistics of a non-integrable one dimensional interacting
fermionic system characterized by the GOE distribution. We calculate
numerically on a finite size system the level spacing distribution and
the Dyson-Mehta correlation. We observe that its low energy spectrum
follows rather the Poisson distribution, characteristic of an integrable
system, consistent with the fact that the low energy excitations of this system
are described by the Luttinger model. We propose this Random Matrix Theory
analysis as a probe for the existence and integrability of low energy effective

White matter changes and confrontation naming in retired aging national football league athletes
Using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), we assessed the relationship of white matter integrity and performance on the Boston Naming Test (BNT) in a group of retired professional football players and a control group. We examined correlations between fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) with BNT T-scores in an unbiased voxelwise analysis processed with tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS). We also analyzed the DTI data by grouping voxels together as white matter tracts and testing each tract's association with BNT T-scores. Significant voxelwise correlations between FA and BNT performance were only seen in the retired football players (p < 0.02). Two tracts had mean FA values that significantly correlated with BNT performance: forceps minor and forceps major. White matter integrity is important for distributed cognitive processes, and disruption correlates with diminished performance in athletes exposed to concussive and subconcussive brain injuries, but not in controls without such exposure
Barriers and facilitators to use of compression therapy by people with venous leg ulcers: A qualitative exploration
Ab Initio Calculation of Spin Gap Behavior in CaV4O9
Second neighbor dominated exchange coupling in CaV4O9 has been obtained from
ab initio density functional (DF) calculations. A DF-based self-consistent
atomic deformation model reveals that the nearest neighbor coupling is small
due to strong cancellation among the various superexchange processes. Exact
diagonalization of the predicted Heisenberg model yields spin-gap behavior in
good agreement with experiment. The model is refined by fitting to the
experimental susceptibility. The resulting model agrees very well with the

What promotes or prevents greater use of appropriate compression in people with venous leg ulcers? A qualitative interview study with nurses in the north of England using the Theoretical Domains Framework
OBJECTIVES: To investigate factors that promote and prevent the use of compression therapy in people with venous leg ulcers. DESIGN: Qualitative interview study with nurses using the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF). SETTING: Three National Health Service Trusts in England. PARTICIPANTS: Purposive sample of 15 nurses delivering wound care. RESULTS: Nurses described factors which made provision of compression therapy challenging. Organisational barriers (TDF domains environmental context and resources/knowledge, skills/behavioural regulation) included heavy/increasing caseloads; lack of knowledge/skills and the provision of training; and prescribing issues (variations in bandaging systems/whether nurses could prescribe). Absence of specialist leg ulcer services to refer patients into was perceived as a barrier to providing optimal care by some community-based nurses. Compression use was perceived to be facilitated by clinics for timely initial assessment; continuity of staff and good liaison between vascular/leg ulcer clinics and community teams; clear local policies and care pathways; and opportunities for training such as ‘shadowing’ in vascular/leg ulcer clinics. Patient engagement barriers (TDF domains goals/beliefs about consequences) focused on getting patients ‘on board’ with compression, and supporting them in using it. Clear explanations were seen as key in promoting compression use. CONCLUSIONS: Rising workload pressures present significant challenges to enhancing leg ulcer services. There may be opportunities to develop facilitated approaches to enable community nursing teams to make changes to practice, enhancing quality of patient care. The majority of venous leg ulcers could be managed in the community without referral to specialist community services if issues relating to workloads/skills/training are addressed. Barriers to promoting compression use could also be targeted, for example, through the development of clear patient information leaflets. While the patient engagement barriers may be easier/quicker to address than organisational barriers, unless organisational barriers are addressed it seems unlikely that all people who would benefit from compression therapy will receive it
An accurate description of quantum size effects in InP nanocrystallites over a wide range of sizes
We obtain an effective parametrization of the bulk electronic structure of
InP within the Tight Binding scheme. Using these parameters, we calculate the
electronic structure of InP clusters with the size ranging upto 7.5 nm. The
calculated variations in the electronic structure as a function of the cluster
size is found to be in excellent agreement with experimental results over the
entire range of sizes, establishing the effectiveness and transferability of
