From the Kriegsacademie to the Naval War College: The Military Planning Process
For centuries military planning was thought to be the exclusive right of noblemen and the highest achievement of genius and charismatic leadership
Adverse events in veterans affairs inpatient psychiatric units: Staff perspectives on contributing and protective factors.
OBJECTIVES: This study sought to identify risk factors and protective factors in hospital-based mental health settings in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), with the goal of informing interventions to improve care of persons with serious mental illness.
METHODS: Twenty key informants from a stratified sample of 7 VHA inpatient psychiatric units were interviewed to gain their insights on causes of patient safety events and the factors that constrain or facilitate patient safety efforts.
RESULTS: Respondents identified threats to patient safety at the system-, provider-, and patient-levels. Protective factors that, when in place, made patient safety events less likely to occur included: promoting a culture of safety; advocating for patient-centeredness; and engaging administrators and organizational leadership to champion these changes.
CONCLUSIONS: Findings highlight the impact of systems-level policies and procedures on safety in inpatient mental health care. Engaging all stakeholders, including patients, in patient safety efforts and establishing a culture of safety will help improve the quality of inpatient psychiatric care. Successful implementation of changes require the knowledge of local experts most closely involved in patient care, as well as support and buy-in from organizational leadership
Dietary Intakes of Children From Food Insecure Households
The objective of this cross-sectional study is to compare the dietary behaviors of children from low food secure (LFS) households with children from very low food secure (VLFS) households over an entire day, and during meals specifically consumed at home —breakfast, snack, and dinner. Parents of the recruited children completed a demographic questionnaire, along with USDA\u27s 6-item short form food security questionnaire. Children completed 24-hour dietary recalls in person. Complete data from 102 children 9 to 12 years old were used. Using ANOVA to assess the differences among groups in intakes over an entire day and during meals consumed at home, no significant differences were found, except for vitamin C intake during breakfast. Based on the definitions of LFS and VLFS, it was hypothesized that children from VLFS group would have lower dietary intakes compared to children from the LFS group. However, this study found little difference. Speculations have been made for these findings and implications for research have been presented
China\u27s Media: The Impact of the Internet
[T]his paper provides a review of how the use of the Internet has grown and been regulated in China. We then draw some conclusions on what the experience to date may have to tell us about future regulatory and usage patterns with respect to the Internet in China
Improving performance in project - based management: synthesizing strategic theories
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore benefits and issues of integrating the theory of constraints (TOC), resource-based view (RBV) and resource-dependence theory (RDT) with conventional project-based management frameworks.
Design/methodology/approach
Extant literature is used to develop a conceptual framework of an integrated model that will be tested for applied robustness. The model has been applied to published projects to identify its strengths and weaknesses.
Findings
The work shows important implications for improved success of projects from the use of TOC, RBV and RDT.
Research limitations/implications
While TOC, RBV and RDT are well established in the context of organization theory, there is limited application in project management. Moreover, the model has yet to be applied in the field. The hypotheses identified in this research are currently being tested using empirical investigation.
Practical implications
The research falls short in addressing some resources, e.g. innovation, tacit knowledge and decision-making methods in traditional project management context. Therefore, identifying these critical resources in future work and exploiting them as the means of improving project performance would enhance the success of project-based management.
Social implications
Project management is an emergent discipline and a project is temporary in nature. Therefore, new ideas and development of theories for project management practices are required. This innovative research, for example, may change the way projects are executed in future.
Originality/value
This paper examines the components of a successful project according to the iron triangle, i.e. scope, quality, time and cost. However, through the application of TOC, RBV and RDT into an integrated project-based management framework gives new insights to resources management
