Characterisation and modelling of mercury speciation in urban air affected by gold mining - assessment of bioavailability
The growing global concern over the release of mercury to the environment has prompted specific inventories that quantify mercury emissions from various sources. Investigations of atmospheric mercury have been mostly done on gaseous species. Although, to assess human expose to mercury, especially in urban areas, the inhalable dust should be included in a study. The Witwatersrand Basin in South Africa is one of the most important gold mining regions in the world. Mercury (Hg), which occurs in gold-bearing ores, was also used for gold recoveries in previous centuries (19th and early 20th century) and presently in illegal artisanal mining. The consequences of these mining activities were the release of Hg to the environment, mainly due to AMD from tailings dumps which are presently reprocessed. The city of Johannesburg is a multimillion population exposed strongly to industrial pollution. The aim of this study was to determine the magnitude of mercury pollution in this urban area and assess its bioavailability. The gaseous samples were collected by trapping mercury on various gold traps. Dust samples were collected from a ground and on inhalation levels (1–2 m above a ground). They were later separated into different fractions by micro sieving. Bioavailability of mercury in inhalable dust (25 μm) was tested by leaching collected samples with artificial lung fluid (ALF, pH 4.5), Gray’s solution (pH 7.4) and water. The leaching conditions were selected to mimic lungs environment (incubator at 30°C, time 24 hrs, rotation of samples 150 rpm). Total concentrations of mercury in dust fractions were also determined after microwave digestion. The results showed extremely high concentration levels of mercury in air and dust in industrial areas. Especially high levels were found around presently reprocessed old gold tailings dumps, up to 900 000 μgl–1. The levels dropped significantly in CBD area but still showing elevated concentrations up to 10 μgl−1. They depend strongly on prevailing wind directions, dry and wet seasons, and day time. Leaching experiments showed that the Gray’s solution extracts more mercury from the dust followed by ALF and much lower by water. This suggests that most of the mercury inhaled with dust will be extracted in the deep interstitial parts of the lungs. In the upper region of lungs extraction will occur to a lesser extent

We present the complete genome of Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus strain LR110, a human stool isolate from the NORDBIOTIC strain collection. The genome consists of a 2,867,184-bp chromosome with 46.8% GC content. Genomic analysis revealed genes related to thiamine salvage, lactose metabolism, and putrescine biosynthesis, providing insight into the strain’s potential probiotic properties
Antigenic Stimuli do not Influence Thymic B Lymphocytes: A Morphological and Functional Study in Germ-Free and Conventionally Reared Piglets
We have recently reported that thymic B lymphocytes (TBL) are the first B-cell subpopulation
undergoing isotype switching to IgG and IgA during embryonic life. The aim of this study is to
analyze the influence of antigenic stimulation on TBL location and activity using a germ-free
(GF) newborn pig model, in which maternal antibodies and antigens do not affect B-cell
development. Immunohistological analysis showed that TBL were disseminated mainly in the
thymic medulla. There were no differences in the distribution of TBL, both in GF newborn
piglets before and after colonization with Escherichia coli and in older conventionally reared
(CONV) piglets. The number of immunoglobulin (Ig)-secreting cells measured by the ELISPOT
method was not influenced by microflora and food antigens. IgM-positive cells secreting IgM
and CD45RC-positive cells spontaneously producing IgM, IgG, and IgA were detected in
newborn thymus
General Chemistry Student Attitudes and Success with Use of Online Homework: Traditional- Responsive versus Adaptive-Responsive
We investigated whether use of an adaptive-responsive online homework system (OHS) that tailors homework to students’ prior knowledge and periodically reassesses students to promote learning through practice retrieval has inherent advantages over traditional-responsive online homework. A quasi-experimental cohort control post-test-only design with nonequivalent groups and propensity scores with nearest neighbor matching (n = 6,114 pairs) was used. The adaptive system was found to increase the odds of a higher final letter grade for average, below average, and failing students. However, despite the learning advantages, students self-reported less favorable attitudes toward adaptive-responsive (3.15 of 5) relative to traditional-responsive OHS (3.31). Specific to the adaptive OHS, the following were found: (i) student attitudes were moderately and positively correlated (r = 0.36, p \u3c 0.01) to final letter grade, (ii) most students (95%) reported engaging in remediation of incorrect responses, (iii) a majority of students (69%) reported changes in study habits, and (iv) students recognized the benefit of using adaptive OHS by ranking its assignments and explanations or review materials as two of the top three most useful course aspects contributing to perceived learning. Instructors can use our findings to inform their choice of online homework system for formative assessment of chemistry learning by weighing the benefits, disadvantages, and learning pedagogies of traditional-responsive versus adaptive-responsive systems
The Effect of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei LPC100 and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum LP140 on Bone Mineral Density in Postmenopausal Women: A Multicenter, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Study
Objectives: modulation of gut microbiota by probiotics has been proposed as a target for intervention to reduce bone mineral density (BMD) loss in the postmenopausal period. This study aims to evaluate the effect of Lacticaseibacillus (L.) paracasei LPC100 and Lactiplantibacillus (L.) plantarum LP140 on BMD in postmenopausal women in a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Methods: the primary outcome was the change in T-score of the lumbar spine measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry assessed after twelve-month probiotic supplementation. Secondary outcomes included changes in serological markers of inflammation and calcium–phosphate metabolism, body mass index, gastrointestinal symptoms, and satisfaction with the intervention. Results: a decrease in T-score indicating the progressive bone demineralization reached a statistically significant difference in the placebo group (from mean values of 0.06 ± 1.04 to −0.28 ± 1.12, p = 0.041) but not in the probiotic group (0.19 ± 0.99 and −0.08 ± 1.05, respectively, p = 0.125) with a p-value = 0.089 between the groups. No significant differences were found in secondary outcomes with the exception of vitamin D concentration and a significant reduction in some gastrointestinal symptoms in the probiotic group. A significant decrease in vitamin D level was observed only in the placebo group (p = 0.014). Probiotics were safe and well tolerated. Conclusions: this study suggests that the oral administration of L. paracasei LPC100 and L. plantarum LP140 may be a viable strategy to prevent BMD loss and vitamin D deficiency in postmenopausal women, but further research is necessary to confirm clinical benefits and to know the mechanism of action [ClinicalTrial.gov NCT06375668]

How well do European child-related leave policies support the caring role of fathers?
Our chapter analyses the extent to which European countries (1) recognize the caring responsibilities of fathers toward their children and (2) value fathers' caring role. To do so, we analyze the designs of individual leave policies and reflect on them by assessing available data on leave uptake by fathers in 13 European countries. Our results show that there is great variation in child-related leave designs across Europe. Our findings, in line with previous work, underscore the importance of generous individual non-transferable leave entitlements. Moreover, our findings bring forward aspects of leave designs that are rarely discussed when considering fathers' leave uptake. Our results indicate that generous non-transferable leave rights should be paired with (a) clearly defined leave periods for fathers, (b) individual entitlement to benefits, and (c) greater scope for flexibility to increase the attractiveness of child-related leave and to strengthen fathers' position when negotiating their childcare leave.</p
The ProPrems trial: investigating the effects of probiotics on late onset sepsis in very preterm infants
BACKGROUND: Late onset sepsis is a frequent complication of prematurity associated with increased mortality and morbidity. The commensal bacteria of the gastrointestinal tract play a key role in the development of healthy immune responses. Healthy term infants acquire these commensal organisms rapidly after birth. However, colonisation in preterm infants is adversely affected by delivery mode, antibiotic treatment and the intensive care environment. Altered microbiota composition may lead to increased colonisation with pathogenic bacteria, poor immune development and susceptibility to sepsis in the preterm infant.Probiotics are live microorganisms, which when administered in adequate amounts confer health benefits on the host. Amongst numerous bacteriocidal and nutritional roles, they may also favourably modulate host immune responses in local and remote tissues. Meta-analyses of probiotic supplementation in preterm infants report a reduction in mortality and necrotising enterocolitis. Studies with sepsis as an outcome have reported mixed results to date.Allergic diseases are increasing in incidence in "westernised" countries. There is evidence that probiotics may reduce the incidence of these diseases by altering the intestinal microbiota to influence immune function. METHODS/DESIGN: This is a multi-centre, randomised, double blinded, placebo controlled trial investigating supplementing preterm infants born at < 32 weeks' gestation weighing < 1500 g, with a probiotic combination (Bifidobacterium infantis, Streptococcus thermophilus and Bifidobacterium lactis). A total of 1,100 subjects are being recruited in Australia and New Zealand. Infants commence the allocated intervention from soon after the start of feeds until discharge home or term corrected age. The primary outcome is the incidence of at least one episode of definite (blood culture positive) late onset sepsis before 40 weeks corrected age or discharge home. Secondary outcomes include: Necrotising enterocolitis, mortality, antibiotic usage, time to establish full enteral feeds, duration of hospital stay, growth measurements at 6 and 12 months' corrected age and evidence of atopic conditions at 12 months' corrected age. DISCUSSION: Results from previous studies on the use of probiotics to prevent diseases in preterm infants are promising. However, a large clinical trial is required to address outstanding issues regarding safety and efficacy in this vulnerable population. This study will address these important issues.
