    Non-scattering Metasurface-bound Cavities for Field Localization, Enhancement, and Suppression

    We propose and analyse metasurface-bound invisible (non-scattering) partially open cavities where the inside field distribution can be engineered. It is demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally that the cavities exhibit unidirectional invisibility at the operating frequency with enhanced or suppressed field at different positions inside the cavity volume. Several examples of applications of the designed cavities are proposed and analyzed, in particular, cloaking sensors and obstacles, enhancement of emission, and "invisible waveguides". The non-scattering mode excited in the proposed cavity is driven by the incident wave and resembles an ideal bound state in the continuum of electromagnetic frequency spectrum. In contrast to known bound states in the continuum, the mode can stay localized in the cavity infinitely long, provided that the incident wave illuminates the cavity

    In the present article the effect of kosmotrope compounds, i.e. systems having the capability to stabilize biological macromolecules, is investigated by using complementary techniques. The attention is focused on the kosmotrope character of trehalose, a glucose disaccharide, compared to its homologous maltose and sucrose. Complementary techniques of neutron scattering, such as Inelastic Neutron Scattering (INS) and Quasi Elastic Neutron Scattering (QENS) allow to point out the capability of trehalose to strongly affect both the structural and dynamical properties of water. Finally the stabilization effect of trehalose on a well know protein, lysozyme, is studied as a function of temperature by Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS)

    Coherent Retroreflective Metasurfaces

    Inhomogeneous metasurfaces have shown possibilities for unprecedented control of wave propagation and scattering. While it is conventional to shine a single incident plane wave from one side of these metastructures, illuminating by several waves simultaneously from both sides may enhance possibilities to control scattered waves, which results in additional functionalities and novel applications. Here, we unveil how using coherent plane-wave illumination of a properly designed inhomogeneous metasurface sheet it is possible to realize controllable retroreflection. We call these metasurfaces as "coherent retroreflectors" and explain the method for realizing them both in theory and practice. We show that coherent retroreflectors can be used for filtering undesired modes and creation of field-localization regions in waveguides. The latter application is in resemblance to bound states in the radiation continuum.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Constraints on Cosmological Models and Reconstructing the Acceleration History of the Universe with Gamma-Ray Burst Distance Indicators

    Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been regarded as standard candles at very high redshift for cosmology research. We have proposed a new method to calibrate GRB distance indicators with Type Ia supernova (SNe Ia) data in a completely cosmology-independent way to avoid the circularity problem that had limited the direct use of GRBs to probe cosmology [N. Liang, W. K. Xiao, Y. Liu, and S. N. Zhang, Astrophys. J. 685, 354 (2008).]. In this paper, a simple method is provided to combine GRB data into the joint observational data analysis to constrain cosmological models; in this method those SNe Ia data points used for calibrating the GRB data are not used to avoid any correlation between them. We find that the Λ\LambdaCDM model is consistent with the joint data in the 1-σ\sigma confidence region, using the GRB data at high redshift calibrated with the interpolating method, the Constitution set of SNe Ia, the cosmic microwave background radiation from Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe five year observation, the baryonic acoustic oscillation from the spectroscopic Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 galaxy sample, the x-ray baryon mass fraction in clusters of galaxies, and the observational Hubble parameter versus redshift data. Comparing to the joint constraints with GRBs and without GRBs, we find that the contribution of GRBs to the joint cosmological constraints is a slight shift in the confidence regions of cosmological parameters to better enclose the Λ\LambdaCDM model. Finally, we reconstruct the acceleration history of the Universe up to z>6z>6 with the distance moduli of SNe Ia and GRBs and find some features that deviate from the Λ\LambdaCDM model and seem to favor oscillatory cosmology models; however further investigations are needed to better understand the situation.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables; v3: the revised version, fig. 6 and some discussions added, accepted for for publication in Phys.     On the dynamic adaptation of language models based on dialogue information

    We present an approach to adapt dynamically the language models (LMs) used by a speech recognizer that is part of a spoken dialogue system. We have developed a grammar generation strategy that automatically adapts the LMs using the semantic information that the user provides (represented as dialogue concepts), together with the information regarding the intentions of the speaker (inferred by the dialogue manager, and represented as dialogue goals). We carry out the adaptation as a linear interpolation between a background LM, and one or more of the LMs associated to the dialogue elements (concepts or goals) addressed by the user. The interpolation weights between those models are automatically estimated on each dialogue turn, using measures such as the posterior probabilities of concepts and goals, estimated as part of the inference procedure to determine the actions to be carried out. We propose two approaches to handle the LMs related to concepts and goals. Whereas in the first one we estimate a LM for each one of them, in the second one we apply several clustering strategies to group together those elements that share some common properties, and estimate a LM for each cluster. Our evaluation shows how the system can estimate a dynamic model adapted to each dialogue turn, which helps to improve the performance of the speech recognition (up to a 14.82% of relative improvement), which leads to an improvement in both the language understanding and the dialogue management tasks

    Rosenfeld functional for non-additive hard spheres

    The fundamental measure density functional theory for hard spheres is generalized to binary mixtures of arbitrary positive and moderate negative non-additivity between unlike components. In bulk the theory predicts fluid-fluid phase separation into phases with different chemical compositions. The location of the accompanying critical point agrees well with previous results from simulations over a broad range of non-additivities and both for symmetric and highly asymmetric size ratios. Results for partial pair correlation functions show good agreement with simulation data.Comment: 8 pages with 4 figure

    Hot and repulsive traffic flow

    We study a message passing model, applicable also to traffic problems. The model is implemented in a discrete lattice, where particles move towards their destination, with fluctuations around the minimal distance path. A repulsive interaction between particles is introduced in order to avoid the appearance of traffic jam. We have studied the parameter space finding regions of fluid traffic, and saturated ones, being separated by abrupt changes. The improvement of the system performance is also explored, by the introduction of a non-constant potential acting on the particles.
