Optimal Approximations Made Easy
The fundamental result of Li, Long, and Srinivasan on approximations of set
systems has become a key tool across several communities such as learning
theory, algorithms, computational geometry, combinatorics and data analysis.
The goal of this paper is to give a modular, self-contained, intuitive proof
of this result for finite set systems. The only ingredient we assume is the
standard Chernoff's concentration bound. This makes the proof accessible to a
wider audience, readers not familiar with techniques from statistical learning
theory, and makes it possible to be covered in a single self-contained lecture
in a geometry, algorithms or combinatorics course.Comment: 7 page
Programozott és stressz-indukált autofágia genetikai szabályozásának és fejlődésbiológiai funkciójának vizsgálata drosophila melanogasterben és caenorhabditis elegansban: sejtpusztulás és túlélés = The genetics and developmental roles of programmed and stress-induced autophagy in Drosophila melanogaster and Caenorhabditis elegans: cell death and survival
| Four P-element induced, Drosophila mutants have been investigated by various methods of genetics, molecular and cellular biology. Data concerning on the SNF4A has been published now. The activity of this gene is necessary for developmental and stress induced autophagy and it acts via the TSC1/TSC2-Rheb-TOR signaling pathway. It has been proved that the FKBP39 gene has an important role in the regulation of autophagy by modifying the activity of the Foxo gene. Mutation of the yeast Atg7 leads to hypersensitivity to stress, reduced life span, and to the age-related accumulation of ubiquitinated protein aggregates in the neurons of the adult brain that finally leads to neuronal death. Mutations or silencing of Atg genes (BEC-1, UNC-51/Atg1, LGG-1/Atg8, Atg9, Atg18) result to significant decrease of the life span in C. elegans and Drosophila. The main message of this work is that autophagy has a central role in aging process because the different longevity pathways converge on autophagy genes and operate downstream of them. It means that the aging process is more specific than it was previously expected. The crosstalk between the regulatory pathways of the regulation of autophagy and apoptosis has been studied in two works. We established that the proapoptotic gene ?hid? is a potent stimulator of the autophagy and the autophagy is necessary for the induction of the apoptotic processes during the death of the salivary gland cells.
A gyász új perspektívái
Absztrakt
A kutatók mégis
A szerzők célja
került gyászelméletek megismertetése a hazai szakemberekkel. A XX. század első
fele óta a gyászelméletek jelentős változáson mentek keresztül. Az újabb
gyászelméletek több ponton is szakítanak a korábbi elméletek elgondolásaival. A
gyász szakaszokra osztása helyett a rugalmas, megküzdésorientált kettős
folyamatmodell, a jelentésalkotási folyamatot középpontba helyező
jelentéskonstrukció-elmélet, valamint a veszteséget követő, fejlődésre fokuszáló
modellek a meghatározóak. A szerzők fontosnak tartják, hogy a klinikumban
tevékenykedő kollégák megismerjék a legújabb gyászelméleteket, hiszen munkájuk
során gyakran találkoznak veszteséggel és veszteséget megélő emberekkel. A
bemutatott modellek hozzájárulnak a hatékony munkavégzéshez, a gyászfolyamat
jobb megértéséhez és a gyászolók megfelelőbb támogatásához. Orv. Hetil., 2015,

Optimal embedded and enclosing isosceles triangles
Given a triangle Δ, we study the problem of determining the smallest enclosing and largest embedded isosceles triangles of Δ with respect to area and perimeter. This problem was initially posed by Nandakumar and was first studied by Kiss, Pach, and Somlai, who showed that if Δ′ is the smallest area isosceles triangle containing Δ, then Δ′ and Δ share a side and an angle. In the present paper, we prove that for any triangle Δ, every maximum area isosceles triangle embedded in Δ and every maximum perimeter isosceles triangle embedded in Δ shares a side and an angle with Δ. Somewhat surprisingly, the case of minimum perimeter enclosing triangles is different: there are infinite families of triangles Δ whose minimum perimeter isosceles containers do not share a side and an angle with Δ
Következtetés: A kezdeti, sokszor heves érzelmekkel is kísért megbeszélések rövid időn belül komoly operatív szakmai fórummá váltak.
In this thesis, we study approximations of set systems (X,S), where X is a base set and S consists of subsets of X called ranges. Given a finite set system, our goal is to construct a small subset of X set such that each range is `well-approximated'. In particular, for a given parameter epsilon in (0,1), we say that a subset A of X is an epsilon-approximation of (X,S) if for any range R in S, the fractions |A cap R|/|A| and |R|/|X| are epsilon-close.Research on such approximations started in the 1950s, with random sampling being the key tool for showing their existence. Since then, the notion of approximations has become a fundamental structure across several communities---learning theory, statistics, combinatorics and algorithms. A breakthrough in the study of approximations dates back to 1971 when Vapnik and Chervonenkis studied set systems with finite VC-dimension, which turned out a key parameter to characterise their complexity. For instance, if a set system (X,S) has VC dimension d, then a uniform sample of O(d/epsilon^2) points is an epsilon-approximation of (X,S) with high probability. Importantly, the size of the approximation only depends on epsilon and d, and it is independent of the input sizes |X| and |S|!In the first part of this thesis, we give a modular, self-contained, intuitive proof of the above uniform sampling guarantee .In the second part, we give an improvement of a 30 year old algorithmic bottleneck---constructing matchings with low crossing number. This can be applied to build approximations with improved guarantees.

Induced saturation of graphs
A graph is -saturated for a graph , if does not contain a copy
of but adding any new edge to results in such a copy. An -saturated
graph on a given number of vertices always exists and the properties of such
graphs, for example their highest density, have been studied intensively. A
graph is -induced-saturated if does not have an induced subgraph
isomorphic to , but adding an edge to from its complement or deleting an
edge from results in an induced copy of . It is not immediate anymore
that -induced-saturated graphs exist. In fact, Martin and Smith (2012)
showed that there is no -induced-saturated graph. Behrens et.al. (2016)
proved that if belongs to a few simple classes of graphs such as a class of
odd cycles of length at least , stars of size at least , or matchings of
size at least , then there is an -induced-saturated graph. This paper
addresses the existence question for -induced-saturated graphs. It is shown
that Cartesian products of cliques are -induced-saturated graphs for in
several infinite families, including large families of trees. A complete
characterization of all connected graphs for which a Cartesian product of
two cliques is an -induced-saturated graph is given. Finally, several
results on induced saturation for prime graphs and families of graphs are
provided.Comment: 30 pages, 12 figure
Tight Lower Bounds on the VC-dimension of Geometric Set Systems
International audienceThe VC-dimension of a set system is a way to capture its complexity and has been a key parameter studied extensively in machine learning and geometry communities. In this paper, we resolve two longstanding open problems on bounding the VC-dimension of two fundamental set systems: k-fold unions/intersections of half-spaces and the simplices set system. Among other implications, it settles an open question in machine learning that was first studied in the foundational paper of Blumer et al. (1989) as well as by Eisenstat and Angluin (2007) and Johnson (2008)
