Interesting diatoms from a special habitat
The epiphytic diatoms of the soda ponds of bomb craters were sampled in 2014.
The small ponds (area: 7.1-86.5 m2, depth: 4 to 60 cm) are located in the northern
part of the Kiskunsåg National Park (47°7.403 'N, 19°8.187'E), near the village of
Apaj in Hungary. Their salinity ranges from fresh water to moderately saline levels
(conductivity of 1.3 to 7.1 mS cm-1). This area has patchy surface salinization,
because the flow pattern of groundwater results extensive surface salinization in
those discharge areas where the infiltrating freshwater does not superimpose the
upwelling saline water. The salts origin from the overpressured NaCl-type water
of the Pre-Neogene basement and the NaHCO3-type water of the Neogene
sediments. The ponds can be characterized by different areal extent, depth and
salinity, various conductivity, hydroperiod (1â9 months, the deepest ones do not
dry out in years with high amount of precipitation due to probably more or less
continuous supply by groundwater), plant coverage and width of macrophyte belt.
All of the ponds were sampled except for the ones with very short (shorter than
one month) hydroperiod.
A total of 80 diatom taxa, representing 33 genera, were identified in these ponds.
The genus Nitzschia was represented by the largest number of species (16),
followed by the genus Gomphonema with 9 taxa. IndVal analysis identified 15
species with significant indicator values for ponds. Some interesting, rare or new
diatoms for Hungarian flora have also been recorded, including Gomphonema
jadwigiae, Halamphora dominici, Navicula wiesneri, Nitzschia austriaca, N. vitrea,
Surirella peisonis

Participants of the team have delivered talks at 15 international conferences and have given 14 invited seminar talks. A small amount of the grant has been used to finance the European Science Foundation conference '' Philosophical and Foundational Issues in Quantum Theory'' in Budapest (September 2005), organized by the participants of the current OTKA grant
Scrutinising the British Monarchy: The corporate brand that was shaken, stirred and survived
Purpose â The principal purposes of this article are to provide normative advice in terms of managing the British Monarchy as a Corporate Heritage Brand and to reveal the efficacy of examining a brandâs history for corporate heritage brands generally.
Design/methodology/approach â Taking a case history approach, this article examines critical events in the Crownâs history. This article is also informed by the diverse literatures on the British Monarchy and also marshals the identity literatures and the nascent literature relating to corporate brands. Six critical incidents that have shaped the monarchy over the last millennium provide the principal data source for this article.
Findings - In scrutinising key events from the institutionâs historiography it was found that the management and maintenance of the Crown as a corporate brand entail concern with issues relating to (1) continuity (maintaining heritage and symbolism), (2) visibility (having a meaningful and prominent public profile), (3) strategy (anticipating and enacting change), (4) sensitivity (rapid response to crises), (5) respectability (retaining public favour), and (6) empathy (acknowledging that brand ownership resides with the public). Taking an integrationist perspective, the efficacy of adopting a corporate marketing approach/philosophy is also highlighted.
Research limitations â The insights derived from this article are based on the extant literatures on the Monarchy: richer insights would, of course, be derived from undertaking research within the institution. However, the difficulty in gaining access to the Royal Household in undertaking empirical/publishable research renders most methodologies currently used within management research virtually unavailable.
Practical implications â There are two. In terms of the Crown a new tripartite dictum is offered which is broader in scope than Bagehotâs and takes account of the Monarchyâs constitutional, societal and symbolic obligations. As such, the Crown should be Dutiful to the tenets of a constitutional monarchy; Devoted to the peoples of the realm and Dedicated to maintaining royal symbolism. In terms of the management of corporate brands/heritage brands a five- faceted approach/modus operandi is introduced which is called: âChronicling the Corporate Brand.â These are: (a) chronicling the brandâs history; (b) assembling a cross-section of individuals to set down the corporate brand narrative; (c) documenting and communicating the insights from the aforementioned (d) marshalling the narrative vis a vis corporate brand management/crisis management; (e) revisiting the brandâs history for new insights.
Originality/value â This is one of the first articles to examine the British Monarchy through a corporate branding lens. It confirms that the Crown is analogous to a corporate brand and, therefore, ought to be managed as such
