    Study of X52 steel in seawater with biocides under turbulent flow conditions

    This work presents the corrosion study of the API X52 pipeline steel immersed in seawater without biocide and with 0,25, 0,5 and 0,75 ppm of biocide, under static and dynamic (turbulent flow) conditions at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The total exposure time of the steel sample in test solution was 24h. In order to control the hydrodynamic conditions, a rotating cylinder electrode(RCE) was used. The rotation speed was 1000 RPM. The steel samples were immersed in the test solution, then, an electrochemical corrosion study using linear polarization resistance (LPR), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and polarization curves (PC) was made. In the superficial analysis of the steel samples, a scanning electronic microscopy was used. The results of the electrochemical study shown that the corrosion rate is higher under turbulent flow conditions than static conditions, and as the biocide concentration increased in the test solution, the corrosion rate decreased.     Compressing PDF sets using generative adversarial networks

    We present a compression algorithm for parton densities using synthetic replicas generated from the training of a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN). The generated replicas are used to further enhance the statistics of a given Monte Carlo PDF set prior to compression. This results in a compression methodology that is able to provide a compressed set with smaller number of replicas and a more adequate representation of the original probability distribution.     It is shown that the 1+1-dimensional matter-coupled Jackiw-Teitelboim model and the model with an exponential potential can be converted by means of appropriate canonical transformations into a bosonic string theory propagating on a flat target space with an indefinite signature. This makes it possible to consistently quantize these models in the functional Schroedinger representation thus generalizing recent results on CGHS theory.Comment: 15 pages, Late

    Integrable models and degenerate horizons in two-dimensional gravity

    We analyse an integrable model of two-dimensional gravity which can be reduced to a pair of Liouville fields in conformal gauge. Its general solution represents a pair of ``mirror'' black holes with the same temperature. The ground state is a degenerate constant dilaton configuration similar to the Nariai solution of the Schwarzschild-de Sitter case. The existence of Ď•=const.\phi=const. solutions and their relation with the solution given by the 2D Birkhoff's theorem is then investigated in a more general context. We also point out some interesting features of the semiclassical theory of our model and the similarity with the behaviour of AdS2_2 black holes.Comment: Latex, 16 pages, 1 figur

    Corrosion study of pipeline carbon steel in sourbrine under turbulent flow conditions at 60°C

    This work presents the electrochemical results obtained during the corrosion study of X52 pipeline steel sample, immersed in “sour” solution under turbulent flow conditions at 60°C. In order to obtain information on the corrosion kinetics, weight loss method, linear polarization resistance, impedance and polarization curves were used at different immersion times. In order to control the turbulent flow conditions, a rotating cylinder electrode was used at two different rotation rates, 0 and 1000 rpm. A surface analysis was carried out in order to identify the corrosion morphology and the corrosion product formed on the steel sample. In general, it was found that flow has a considerable influence upon the electrochemical process occurring on the surface of the steel. It was observed as the flow rate increased the corrosion rate also increased. In surface analysis three phases were found, mackinawite (Fe,Ni)  1+xS ,pyrrhothite (Fe(1-x)S) and marcasite (FeS2).     Capture-Recapture Reveals Heterogeneity in Habitat-Specific Mongoose Densities and Spatiotemporal Variability in Trapping Success in St. Kitts, West Indies

    The small Indian mongoose (Urva auropunctata) is a non-native invasive species across the Caribbean and a rabies reservoir on at least four islands in the region. Although previous studies reported mongoose density estimates in their non-native range, the variability in trapping designs, study seasonality, and analytical methods among studies precludes direct comparisons. This study is the first to report mongoose densities for the island of St. Kitts, West Indies. Our objective was to quantify mongoose densities across four habitats characteristic for the island. High capture and recapture rates in this study resulted in detailed estimates of spatial heterogeneity in mongoose densities, ranging from 0.53 (CI95: 0.46–0.61) mongooses/ha in suburban habitat to 5.85 (CI95: 4.42–7.76) mongooses/ha in nearby dry forest. Estimates were robust to the estimation method used (correlation among methods, r \u3e 0.9). Female-biased sex ratios estimated from fall season versus mostly unbiased sex ratios estimated from summer season suggests seasonality in capture success resulting from differences in sex-specific activity patterns of mongooses. We found no effect of habitat characteristics, at the scale of trap placements, associated with mongoose capture success
