Providing Preventive Oral Health Care to Infants and Young Children in Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), Early Head Start, and Primary Care Settings
This report focuses on seven oral health programs that provide preventive oral health care to young children (infants, toddlers, and children up to 5 years old) in Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), Early Head Start (EHS), and primary care settings. All of the programs strive to increase access to preventive oral health care by integrating dental services into primary care settings, WIC clinics, or EHS centers. These programs also rely on primary care providers (physicians, nurses, medical assistants, etc.) or new types of dental hygienists who can practice in community settings to deliver preventive oral health services. Two additional reports in this series describe the remaining programs that provide care in non-dental settings and programs designed to specifically address socioeconomic, cultural, and geographic barriers to preventive oral health care. The findings from the EAs of these programs are synthesized to highlight diverse and innovative strategies that are utilized to provide preventive oral health care in primary care settings, WIC clinics, or EHS centers. These strategies have potential for rigorous evaluation and could emerge as best practices. If proven effective, these innovative program elements could then be disseminated and replicated to increase access for populations in need of preventive oral health care
Young Stars with SALT
We present a spectroscopic and kinematic analysis of 79 nearby M dwarfs in 77
systems. All are low-proper-motion southern hemisphere objects and were
identified in a nearby star survey with a demonstrated sensitivity to young
stars. Using low-resolution optical spectroscopy from the Red Side Spectrograph
(RSS) on the South African Large Telescope (SALT), we have determined radial
velocities, H-alpha, Lithium 6708\AA, and Potassium 7699\AA~equivalent widths
linked to age and activity, and spectral types for all our targets. Combined
with astrometric information from literature sources, we identify 44 young
stars. Eighteen are previously known members of moving groups within 100
parsecs of the Sun. Twelve are new members, including one member of the TW
Hydra moving group, one member of the 32 Orionis moving group, nine members of
Tucana-Horologium, one member of Argus, and two new members of AB Doradus. We
also find fourteen young star systems that are not members of any known groups.
The remaining 33 star systems do not appear to be young. This appears to be
evidence of a new population of nearby young stars not related to the known
nearby young moving groups.Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures, 6 tables. Accepted to Ap
Free fields via canonical transformations of matter-coupled 2D dilaton gravity models
It is shown that the 1+1-dimensional matter-coupled Jackiw-Teitelboim model
and the model with an exponential potential can be converted by means of
appropriate canonical transformations into a bosonic string theory propagating
on a flat target space with an indefinite signature. This makes it possible to
consistently quantize these models in the functional Schroedinger
representation thus generalizing recent results on CGHS theory.Comment: 15 pages, Late
A Single Circumbinary Disk in the HD 98800 Quadruple System
We present sub-arcsecond thermal infrared imaging of HD 98800, a young
quadruple system composed of a pair of low-mass spectroscopic binaries
separated by 0.8'' (38 AU), each with a K-dwarf primary. Images at wavelengths
ranging from 5 to 24.5 microns show unequivocally that the optically fainter
binary, HD 98800B, is the sole source of a comparatively large infrared excess
upon which a silicate emission feature is superposed. The excess is detected
only at wavelengths of 7.9 microns and longer, peaks at 25 microns, and has a
best-fit black-body temperature of 150 K, indicating that most of the dust lies
at distances greater than the orbital separation of the spectroscopic binary.
We estimate the radial extent of the dust with a disk model that approximates
radiation from the spectroscopic binary as a single source of equivalent
luminosity. Given the data, the most-likely values of disk properties in the
ranges considered are R_in = 5.0 +/- 2.5 AU, DeltaR = 13+/-8 AU, lambda_0 =
2(+4/-1.5) microns, gamma = 0+/-2.5, and sigma_total = 16+/-3 AU^2, where R_in
is the inner radius, DeltaR is the radial extent of the disk, lambda_0 is the
effective grain size, gamma is the radial power-law exponent of the optical
depth, tau, and sigma_total is the total cross-section of the grains. The range
of implied disk masses is 0.001--0.1 times that of the moon. These results show
that, for a wide range of possible disk properties, a circumbinary disk is far
more likely than a narrow ring.Comment: 11 page Latex manuscript with 3 postscript figures. Accepted for

Generation of Bright Two-Color Continuous Variable Entanglement
We present the first measurement of squeezed-state entanglement between the
twin beams produced in an Optical Parametric Oscillator (OPO) operating above
threshold. Besides the usual squeezing in the intensity difference between the
twin beams, we have measured squeezing in the sum of phase quadratures. Our
scheme enables us to measure such phase anti-correlations between fields of
different frequencies. In the present measurements, wavelengths differ by ~1
nm. Entanglement is demonstrated according to the Duan et al. criterion [Phys.

Boundedness of Pseudodifferential Operators on Banach Function Spaces
We show that if the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator is bounded on a

The Brown Dwarf Kinematics Project I. Proper motions and tangential velocities for a large sample of late-type M, L, and T dwarfs
We report proper-motion measurements for 427 late-type M, L, and T dwarfs, 332 of which have been measured for the first time. Combining these new proper motions with previously published measurements yields a sample of 841 M7-T8 dwarfs. We combined parallax measurements or calculated spectrophotometric distances, and computed tangential velocities for the entire sample. We find that kinematics for the full and volume-limited 20 pc samples are consistent with those expected for the Galactic thin disk, with no significant differences between late-type M, L, and T dwarfs. Applying an age-velocity relation we conclude that the average kinematic age of the 20 pc sample of ultracool dwarfs is older than recent kinematic estimates and more consistent with age results calculated with population synthesis models. There is a statistically distinct population of high tangential velocity sources (V tan > 100 km s^â1) whose kinematics suggest an even older population of ultracool dwarfs belonging to either the Galactic thick disk or halo. We isolate subsets of the entire sample, including low surface gravity dwarfs, unusually blue L dwarfs, and photometric outliers in J â Ks color and investigate their kinematics. We find that the spectroscopically distinct class of unusually blue L dwarfs has kinematics clearly consistent with old age, implying that high surface gravity and/or low metallicity may be relevant to their spectral properties. The low surface gravity dwarfs are kinematically younger than the overall population, and the kinematics of the red and blue ultracool dwarfs suggest ages that are younger and older than the full sample, respectively. We also present a reduced proper-motion diagram at 2MASS (Two Micron All Sky Survey) Ks for the entire population and find that a limit of HKs > 18 excludes M dwarfs from the L and T dwarf population regardless of near-infrared color, potentially enabling the identification of the coldest brown dwarfs in the absence of color information
