On Roth’s “human fossil” from Baradero, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina: morphological and genetic analysis
The “human fossil” from Baradero, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, is a collection of skeleton parts first recovered by the paleontologist Santiago Roth and further studied by the anthropologist Rudolf Martin. By the end of the nineteenth century and beginning of the twentieth century it was considered one of the oldest human skeletons from South America's southern cone. Here, we present the results of an interdisciplinary approach to study and contextualize the ancient individual remains. We discuss the context of the finding by first compiling the available evidence associated with the historical information and any previous scientific publications on this individual. Then, we conducted an osteobiographical assessment, by which we evaluated the sex, age, and overall preservation of the skeleton based on morphological features. To obtain a 3D virtual reconstruction of the skull, we performed high resolution CT-scans on selected skull fragments and the mandible. This was followed by the extraction of bone tissue and tooth samples for radiocarbon and genetic analyses, which brought only limited results due to poor preservation and possible contamination. We estimate that the individual from Baradero is a middle-aged adult male. We conclude that the revision of foundational collections with current methodological tools brings new insights and clarifies long held assumptions on the significance of samples that were recovered when archaeology was not yet professionalized
Flavour Changing Neutral Higgs Boson Decays from Squark - Gluino Loops
We study the flavour changing neutral Higgs boson decays that can be induced
from genuine supersymmetric particles at the one-loop level and within the
context of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We consider all the
possible flavour changing decay channels of the three neutral Higgs bosons into
second and third generation quarks, and focus on the Supersymmetric-QCD
corrections from squark-gluino loops which are expected to provide the dominant
contributions. We assume here the more general hypothesis for flavour mixing,
where there is misalignment between the quark and squark sectors, leading to a
flavour non-diagonal squark mass matrix. The form factors involved, and the
corresponding Higgs partial decay widths and branching ratios, are computed
both analytically and numerically, and their behaviour with the parameters of
the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and with the squark mass mixing are
analyzed in full detail. The large rates found, are explained in terms of the
non-decoupling behaviour of these squark-gluino loop corrections in the
scenario with very large supersymmetric mass parameters. Our results show that
if these decays are seen in future colliders they could provide clear indirect
signals of supersymmetry.Comment: 32 Pages and 12 PostScript Level 2 Figures. Some references adde
MSSM Higgs Boson Phenomenology at the Tevatron Collider
The Higgs sector of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) consists
of five physical Higgs bosons, which offer a variety of channels for their
experimental search. The present study aims to further our understanding of the
Tevatron reach for MSSM Higgs bosons, addressing relevant theoretical issues
related to the SUSY parameter space, with special emphasis on the radiative
corrections to the down--quark and lepton couplings to the Higgs bosons for
large . We performed a computation of the signal and backgrounds for
the production processes and at the upgraded Tevatron,
with being the neutral MSSM Higgs bosons. Detailed experimental
information and further higher order calculations are demanded to
confirm/refine these predictions.Comment: 47 pages, REVTex format, 15 figures; spacing changed to reduce

Revealing the footprints of squark gluino production through Higgs search experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at 7 TeV and 14 TeV
The invariant mass distribution of the di-photons from the decay of the
lighter scalar Higgs boson(h) to be carefully measured by dedicated h search
experiments at the LHC may be distorted by the di-photons associated with the
squark-gluino events with much larger cross sections in Gauge Mediated
Supersymmetry Breaking (GMSB) models. This distortion if observed by the
experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at 7 TeV or 14 TeV, would disfavour
not only the standard model but various two Higgs doublet models with
comparable h - masses and couplings but without a sector consisting of new
heavy particles decaying into photons. The minimal GMSB (mGMSB) model
constrained by the mass bound on h from LEP and that on the lightest neutralino
from the Tevatron, produce negligible effects. But in the currently popular
general GMSB(GGMSB) models the tail of the above distribution may show
statistically significant excess of events even in the early stages of the LHC
experiments with integrated luminosity insufficient for the discovery of h. We
illustrate the above points by introducing several benchmark points in various
GMSB models - minimal as well as non-minimal. The same conclusion follows from
a detailed parameter scan in a simplified GGMSB model recently employed by the
CMS collaboration to interpret their searches in the di-photon + \etslash
channel. Other observables like the effective mass distribution of the
di-photon + X events may also reveal the presence of new heavy particles beyond
the Higgs sector. The contamination of the h mass peak and simple remedies are
also discussed.Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures, title and organization of the paper is changed,
detailed parameter scan in a simplified GGMSB model is added, conclusions and
old numerical results remain unchange
Realistic Standard Model Fermion Mass Relations in Generalized Minimal Supergravity (GmSUGRA)
Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) usually predict wrong Standard Model (SM)
fermion mass relation m_e/m_{\mu} = m_d/m_s toward low energies. To solve this
problem, we consider the Generalized Minimal Supergravity (GmSUGRA) models,
which are GUTs with gravity mediated supersymmetry breaking and higher
dimensional operators. Introducing non-renormalizable terms in the super- and
K\"ahler potentials, we can obtain the correct SM fermion mass relations in the
SU(5) model with GUT Higgs fields in the {\bf 24} and {\bf 75} representations,
and in the SO(10) model. In the latter case the gauge symmetry is broken down
to SU(3)_C X SU(2)_L X SU(2)_R X U(1)_{B-L}, to flipped SU(5)X U(1)_X, or to
SU(3)_C X SU(2)_L X U(1)_1 X U(1)_2. Especially, for the first time we generate
the realistic SM fermion mass relation in GUTs by considering the
high-dimensional operators in the K\"ahler potential.Comment: JHEP style, 29 pages, no figure, references adde
Use and conservation of Butia palm groves: the link that goes beyond borders.
Butiais a genus palm species from South America. Currently, the species of this genus are threatened with extinction in Brazil. This work aimed to understand the ethnobotanical relationships withButia palm groves, how this process has been built, and how it contributes to thein situconservation of its native genetic resource
Optical and radio variability of the BL Lac object AO 0235+16: a possible 5-6 year periodicity
New optical and radio data on the BL Lacertae object AO 0235+16 have been
collected in the last four years by a wide international collaboration, which
confirm the intense activity of this source. The optical data also include the
results of the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT) first-light campaign
organized in November 1997. The optical spectrum is observed to basically
steepen when the source gets fainter. We have investigated the existence of
typical variability time scales and of possible correlations between the
optical and radio emissions by means of visual inspection, Discrete Correlation
Function analysis, and Discrete Fourier Transform technique. The major radio
outbursts are found to repeat quasi-regularly with a periodicity of about 5.7
years; this period is also in agreement with the occurrence of some of the
major optical outbursts, but not all of them.Comment: to be published in A&
FCNC Top Quark Decays in Extra Dimensions
The flavor changing neutral top quark decay t -> c X is computed, where X is
a neutral standard model particle, in a extended model with a single extra
dimension. The cases for the photon, X= \gammaR_\xi gauge. We find that
the branching ratios can be enhanced by the dynamics originated in the extra
dimension. In the limit where 1/R >> ->, we have found Br(t -> c \gamma) \simeq
10^{-10} for 1/R = 0.5 TeV. For the decay t -> c H, we have found Br(t -> cH)
\simeq 10^{-10} for a low Higgs mass value. The branching ratios go to zero
when 1/R -> \infty.Comment: Accepted to be published in the Europ. Phys. Jour. C; 16 pages, 2

Decoupling property of the supersymmetric Higgs sector with four doublets
In supersymmetric standard models with multi Higgs doublet fields,
selfcoupling constants in the Higgs potential come only from the D-terms at the
tree level. We investigate the decoupling property of additional two heavier
Higgs doublet fields in the supersymmetric standard model with four Higgs
doublets. In particular, we study how they can modify the predictions on the
quantities well predicted in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM),
when the extra doublet fields are rather heavy to be measured at collider
experiments. The B-term mixing between these extra heavy Higgs bosons and the
relatively light MSSM-like Higgs bosons can significantly change the
predictions in the MSSM such as on the masses of MSSM-like Higgs bosons as well
as the mixing angle for the two light CP-even scalar states. We first give
formulae for deviations in the observables of the MSSM in the decoupling region
for the extra two doublet fields. We then examine possible deviations in the
Higgs sector numerically, and discuss their phenomenological implications.Comment: 26 pages, 24 figures, text sligtly modified, version to appear in
