Age of Kindergarten Entry and Rate of Specific Learning Disabilities

Kindergarten age eligibility requirements vary from state to state; however, school districts typically admit children into kindergarten in the fall following a student’s fifth birthday. Research on the outcomes of five-year-old children and children whose entry was delayed until age six is contradictory. The current study was conducted to add to the existing literature to assist families and policy makers with decision making regarding appropriate kindergarten entry age. The sample included 541 second through seventh grade students from a small rural school district. Actual and predicted counts of students who were later found eligible for specific learning disabilities were examined among children with delayed entry as compared to children who entered kindergarten as five-year-olds. A Fisher’s Exact test revealed no significant difference in the values any more than would be expected due to chance. Further studies should focus on increasing the sample size by adding other larger Ohio school districts, conducting longitudinal studies that follow a cohort of first grade students throughout public education, or by researching districts with higher socio-economic statuses

Instructional methods and efficacy of teachers trained in differentiated instruction

This study examined the instructional methods and efficacy of teachers involved in a two-part district staff development project in differentiated instruction. Responses from 194 kindergarten through twelfth grade teachers on a self-perception survey were collected after an initial district staff training and implementation and again after involvement in a second teacher centered district staff development plan in differentiated instruction with implementation time. The data collected were analyzed to determine what instructional methods and efficacy the staff displayed and to determine whether a change in teachers\u27 perceptions occurred during the 9-month period following the second district plan

Comparison of the Reading Subtests of The Woodcock Johnson Tests of Achievement- Third Edition and the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test-Second Edition

Sphagnum Taxa and Their Distribution in Iowa

Sphagnum was known previously from eight counties in Iowa based on documented specimens. Undocumented collections were also reported from Buchanan, Cedar, and Johnson Counties. We have added four new species (S. compactum, S. fimbriatum, S. squarrosum, and S. warnstorfii) and three new varieties (S. subsecundum var. subsecundum, S. recurvum var. amblyphyllum, and S. recurvum var. recurvum) to the state flora, and four new stations in three counties (Black Hawk, Iowa, and Marion) where sphagnum was previously unknown. Sphagnum is presently represented in Iowa by documented collections of 13 taxa from 13 stations in 9 counties, mostly in the eastern third of the state
